Opens up with a nose of stones, mint, herbs and soft cherry fruit. Vertical, almost blue fruited, medium bodied with good acidity. 15% alc but there is balance and harmony here, no heady flavors. Some tertiary flavors, Provençal herbs and spices, but the fruit prevails. Impressive, somehow Marcoux is of interest to me again. Long term aging is required.

Clear with sediment at the bottom as bottle was standing for a few hours. Medium garnet with no bricking. Nose is clean, red fruit and baking spices, and garrigue. There are no signs of overripe or dried fruit. On the palate it is dry, and silky. Tannins ripe are rounded. It feels fresh, acid is slightly higher than average. Alcohol on the other hand is a bit high. This needs to be chilled a few degrees. It would make a better winter wine. Finish is medium and spicy.

Many other tasters have found this wine to be advanced or stewed but this bottle was in quite good shape. Flavors were on the dark fruit side with a savory quality and a high salinity. Felt like a more serious wine than it has been given credit for. Enjoyed by most at the table

Classic Marcoux notes of brown fruit and Christmas spices combines with dark cherry fruit. Takes time to open up and as with the 95 Fonsalette, this shows best on day 3. Nice, comforting wine. For fall/winter.

Upon popping, intense tight fruit with a savory palate of oil cured olives and herbs. After some opening up, this gave way to asphalt and licorice, rich fruit and a fleshy spine of acid and tannin. Seems like this wine is trying to integrate and will be interesting to see how it develops with time.

Ruby. Succulent, sweet raspberry. Glycerine texture without being overextracted or heavy. Maybe a bit short on the acidity, but it still has enough lift and verve to balance the rich fruit. I was very pleased with how this has held up. Drinking beautifully now if you're looking for a seductive mouthful of Grenache.

Light ruby. Gushing red fruit aromas. Full bodied but stops short of feeling unctuous or syrupy. Cheery, ripe raspberry fruit that is incredibly primary at 10 years of age. Not a lot going on at the edges around this great core of fruit. Drink soon but only if you are a fan of extracted old vine Grenache.

The Taste Pilots, 2.0: Grenache Night (An Undisclosed Gem of a Private Room Somewhere in Buellton, CA): Holding this bottle for 10 years was a wise decision by its generous donor Michael, as it outperformed expectations and handily punched above its weight. Ripe fruit on the nose and palate, very well rounded and rewarding, with loads of bacon emerging over time as well. Surprised everyone with its ability to run with the big dogs.

Very strong molasses/porty smell after opening. Decanted for up to 1 and 1/2 hour. The wine looks garnet colored. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. The body is full. The wine finishes long. The fruit flavors did shine though with decanting. The wine was hot and still had strong tannins.

Very nice. This has lost a lot of its youthful puppy fat since that first bottle with Michel almost one year ago. It's very nice today, showing a kirsch reduction that is concentrated and pure, and then gradually opening to reveal bright and pure fruits, both red and black, very juicy, with very pleasing spices and a mossy/forest element on the palate. The 15% alcohol is very nicely hidden on both nose and palate, but on more than one sip I did detect a bit of sharpness in the back end of the palate. No degradation overnight, the wine now shows dark fruit and spices, showing the darker side of Grenache, spice cake, comes across as sweet and spicy, really quite good. Often, CdP can quickly oxidize overnight, but not this, and it was equal to or better than the first night and I quite enjoyed this wine. I waited too long to buy some of this recently advertised at a stupid cheap price, and it's my loss.

When a friend arrived, I opened this and put it in the fridge to cool it down. A little time in the cold and open definitely helped. Whoa, right off the bat, this is full of bright red, brambly berries. After I decanted it into a bottle-shaped carafe, the wine really opened up, unfolding with layers of red berries, guarrigue, smoke, game, spices and a lovely smooth, round frame that ended in nice acidity. Somewhat friendly from the get-go, this kept on opening up as we drank it, a fun and pleasant wine that begged to be drunk faster and faster. Shockingly, this was 15%, but so well-balanced that neither of us could detect the alcohol. The finish went on and on, coating the mouth in a thin layer of delicious memories.

A great showing, young, but wide open and smooth. In comparison to the '05 Marcoux CdP I opened last week, this was much more user friendly and giving. Palate shows red and black berry fruit, plums, game, light garrigue, in a frame of silky tannin and bright, lifting acidity. The palate texture is meaty and full, yet silky smooth on the sides. The alcohol is listed on the label at 15% - like the '05 Marcoux - but this more forward, fleshier wine hid it much better than the '05. The '05 will likely be spectacular in five years, whereas this wine is terrific right now (and should be great for a long time). With Michel, and a great paring with Chinese smoked duck with ginger and Szechuan lamb, both of which were judiciously spiced and did not compete with the wine.

Still seems a bit closed down; this wine is quite good but its nose is currently muted and it comes off as a bit austere, although not particularly tannic. Medium deep ruby. The nose starts earthy, touching the gamey followed by the fruit (mainly red) spiced up by notes of pepper both white and bell. Initially tight and disjointed it gained some harmony with time...a medium body focused still on the fruit and on a coat of chewing tannins. Low acidity promotes a medium finish attached to a general drieness. Still young and begging for some years in the dark to, hopefully, gain more complexity and finesse. Hold at least 6 years...

Young Chateauneuf and Minor Southern Rhones (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Medium ruby with tawny rim. Gamy nose, thyme. Lush entry, medium frame. A little raisiny. Fades and loses focus on mid-palate-not that authoritative and lacks flavor intensity. No obvious flaws, just not that good and the balance leaves much to be desired.

The nose on this wine has always been captivating to me from 375ml, fresh, almost fresh picked strawberries, raspberries, then a sort of compote note, very sweet, very primary, very pleasing...akin to Rayas, go with me here, in the fact there is just AMAZING purity, Grenache galore. Sweet fruit, structure, brilliant acidity...perfect with the Kooks "Naive" and perhaps fitting!

Dark red. Delicious nose of dark cherries, blackcurrant, some licorice and juniper, and even hints of roses. In the mouth it seems round and lush with some sweet yet slightly drying tannins at the back. With air it gets even lusher and the tannins quickly resolve. A very charming CNDP.
