MEA Celebration at St. Genevieve (St. Genevieve): Pop and pour. Tasted over about an hour. Vibrant, youthful gold color. Soaring nose with orchard fruit, mineral and hints of bread dough. Equally compelling on the palate, with bright fruit and the most appealing soft-textured mousse. This is plush and soft in the mouth, but still balanced by good acidity. The finish is long and lingering and fully satisfying. Tasted again at the end of the meal; if anything this was even better four hours later. A compelling Champagne for sure!

This tonight was the superb Guy Clarke songwriter to the 88 Krug Collection's full on rocker '71 Who's Next. Starting out relatively austere but with compelling minerality and orange peel this took on considerable more nuance and complexity as the night progressed reaching a crescendo about 2 hours in. A study in quiet perfection and precision. It's elegance and precision bely its complexity and range. It has lovely energy provided by prefect acidity and tantalizing bubbles that never seem intrusive, abrasive, nor youthfully bright. Instead the structure maintains the upmost in a unique mature version of freshness sans even the remoted sign of oxidation. Not unlike drinking a great 20yr old white Burgundy but with the added effervescence. I rated this the same as the 88 Krug Collection for completely difference reasons and if pushed would choose this as my top choice between the two but what a great flight together. This is the more intellectual of two outstanding glasses of champagne. This 75 also had the most youthful color of the 3 champagnes with its much paler release like gold color. Thanks Brad!

Dom Pérignon Dinner (Atara): There is something truly distinctive about the Oènotheques. This is incredibly fresh with a big reductive sulphur nose including Dom brioche and saline. This was the only Oènotheque in tonight's Dom vertical spanning '04 to '66 and this is unique from everything else, including the regular '76.

Extremely refined champagne and more lazer-like than the regular bottlings of similar age. Very minerally and floral and quite restrained with a beautiful mousse along with notes of honey and yeasty bread. Great acidity to match the spice-driven fruit and really still tastes fairly young with just a hint of caramel. Impressive and classy juice.

Extremely elegant. High note honey, wet slate, and faint oyster shell on the nose. Fine mousse, good acidity on the front palate, with light yeast on the backpalate. Granite minerality to this bottle. Great finish with citrus acid, sweet lemon and long floral notes.

Weekend with Eddie - Part 1 (Marea, New York City): A hint of fino, honey, pepper, baked apple, almond paste and mineral. Very fresh, polished and energetic palate, generous fine mousse, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and long clean finish. The palate is fresher than then the nose suggests. Most preferred it to the 79 Cristal. The freshness in palate is very impressive.

Interestingly, the cork was engraved "1976" so I'm not sure what vintage this actually was. Regardless, the wine was lively for age and still had bubbles, although not a mousse in the white wine glasses we used. Fairly simple at first, walnut and orange peel, but did become more complex after open an hour. I can't say it's great just because it is alive and old though.

SS's 40th at Les Amis. Bright gold, very primary in appearance. Small bubbles. A little closed on the nose initially, but with time, white flowers, chinese pear, yellow peaches, kiwi with lots of minerals and pebbles, this drank like a Burgundy GC, and amazingly there didn't seem to be the secondary characteristics. Did we drink this 20 years early? Good intensity on the palate, jasmine, pears and peaches again, vanilla creme, stone and grass. This still seemed more austere and linear rather than rich and expressive. Very good champagne. Very good beginning to the evening.

Yellow gold in the glass and still somewhat effervescent. Smoke and sulphur right off the pop. Endlessly complex notes including egg whites, walnuts, almonds, vanilla bean and extract, whipped / creamed honey, brioche, baking pretzel, and wood-fired pizza oven. Fascinating champagne and definitely worth it if you are so lucky to give it a try. Truly something else.

We kicked off with a 1975 Dom Perignon Oenotheque that was in terrific condition. It had some honey, mushroom and toast development on the nose and was full, sweet, vinous and creamy in the mouth. It still had fine bead and a vigorous mousse and there was a kiss of minerality to the finish.

A trio of Oeno. Drank the 69, 71, and 75 side by side. All three were fantastic. The 69 has always been my favorite, and this night was no exception. Simply stunning, The 71 has really gotten better, and had two of eight votes for wine of the flight. I think the 71 Oeno needs a bit more time in bottle, but it is improving. It also benefits more than most from extended time in the glass. The 75 is great, and continues to go from strength to strength. All in all, a terrific flight.

Nothing wrong here, just doesn't meet my (lofty) expectations. Very pale, one stream of the tiniest bubbles I have ever seen rises from the flute. Vague on the nose, pleasant, but that's all. On the palate; once again, pleasant, delicate, arguably elegant. But where's the character, drive, excitement? Not from this bottle.

50/50 bar on the nose. The sweet orange and cream takes you right back to childhood. The great power and length on the palate snaps you back to reality. As is the case with many oneotheque wines, there is a nice blend of aged and youthful components. To me the wine smells more youthful than it tastes. The oneotheque wine wines gain a nice creamy consistency, but lack the acidity that the original release wines seem to retain better.

Splendid "RD" Dom Pérignon. Light yellow, vigorous, good mousse, just a bit more than non-Oenotheque. Amazingly fresh and vigorous. More citrus and fewer bass notes than the originally disgorged '75 DP, but no less interesting. Gorgeous champagne with a great future still.

Have had the 75 Oeno quite a few times, and this was a great bottle. DP typicity. A bouquet and palate that is intriguingly similar to the 95 Oenotheque. One of the things I love about DP is the consistency, literally over decades. Would agree with KA, that the wine does seem to be aging somewhat quickly over the last few years, which may indicate drinking earlier rather than later.

Black label third plenitude bottle. Airline Eddie opened a couple of bottles for the group. Eddie had his champagne epiphany a couple of years ago drinking this at my birthday dinner and this became his house champagne. He regularly opens a bottle or two whenver I see him. No complaints from me. This bottle was showing extremely well and has lost some of its pure youthfulness. Still very fresh, but it has developed many typical DP mature notes of ground coffee with levels of creamy flavors. My only potential concern is how rapidly this has developed since its disgorgement. I noticed that the last time I drank it and even more so this time. This bottle tasted ten years older (but still in a positive way) than bottles I drank 2+ years ago. This may be one to consume over the next 8-10 years. But for now Staggering Plus.

Dom Perignon dinner at Daniel - 12/2/08. Nose: Sweetest of the wines on the nose - light, vanilla, ocean at the end. Palate: Wow what can I say? Near infinite depth and power, acid and structure. Leads with pulses of sweet and vanilla toast with an insane alloy of vanilla, toast and mineral. Finish shows the alloy of sweet and mineral perfectly - perfect precision. The nose is not a universe onto itself like the 69, but overall the 75 is a slightly superior wine. The palate and finish are such to make one weep or write epic poems. Nose: 5/6, Palate: 7/6, Finish: 7/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 2/2 = ? NB: I have never violated the parameters of my 20-point scale except for the 69 and 75 Oenotheques.

Nose: 5/6, Palate: 7/6, Finish: 7/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 2/2 = ? NB: I have never violated the parameters of my 20-point scale except for the 69 and 75 Oenotheques.
