Troplong Mondot: 1959-2012 (Stockholm, Sweden): Semi-blind (knew which 17 vintages that were being served). Dark colour. Huge nose. Dark fruits, youthful fruit in a big way. Wunderbar A big bruiser of a young wine. Fantastic tannic profile that with the perfect acidity and fruit co-create a wine that will live and develop for decades. This is tight! And there are also plums and sloe to be enjoyed in there amidst the dark fruits.
This is heavy metal in a bottle!
My guess: I didn't get it right, even with only four choices left... My flight-winner, edging itself before the 2010. The first Bdx '07 to impress my socks off! Wow!

Deep ruby, some browning. Terrible cork, crumbling badly. Graphite, dark berries, smoked meats, eastern spices. Plums. Tannins a bit raspy, grainy. Decent but not wonderful. But that cork probably hindered this bottle.

Decanted three hours before service. In the glass, dark, deep purple, fully saturated - more like a barrel sample in appearance than a 15 year old wine. On the nose, muted graphite, leather, and currants. On the palate, plums, currants, graphite, and smoky oak, with a silky, almost lean midpalate and finish. This isn't a showstopper by any means, and I don't know that I would expect much more from further aging, but for a difficult vintage, this was a decent performance.

Difficult vintage with wet and damp summer made this Troplong-Mondot a dark, smoky and earthy beast. A blend of 90% Merlot, 5% CS and 5% CF. Aged for 24 months in 75% new oak barrels. Deep ruby, garnet hue. Intense complex aroma of cherries, smoke, blackberry liqueur, smoky plums, graphite, medicinal notes, cassis, cold cuts, leather. Full body, powerful and textured with a delicate elegance twist, expressive layered flavours of juicy and smoky black fruits, earthy cassis hints, rich fine tannins, long finish.

20 Vintages of Troplong Mondot: This was a trainwreck of a vertical tasting. An average of meager 86.8 pts, only 6 wines with a rating of more than 90pts. Almost all wines pre 2017 and a winemaker/style change have dried out. Too much extraction and heavy oak treatment produced wines that did not age well, have no fruit and charm left. I don’t have group ratings but the sentiment in the room was similar (this was the fastest tasting ever with this group). It was a root day but that can’t explain everything. Also, the provenance or storage of the bottles was no issue (all bought En Primeur, stored perfectly since). Troplong Mondot seems to be a victim of a series of bad choices, mainly the wrong consultant. Luckily, the future looks brighter.
TN: No nose. No fruit left. Just wood and drying tannins. Yak. 80 is too generous for such a wine.

PnP over 3h, 16- ? C. Before dinner w hard cheese, olives; 90p. Good lengh with dark notes, almost black. Asphalt, leather, bit bitterness and low on fruit at first. After 45 min the fruits increses. 18C much better. A bit rough and more tannins and more mouthfeel.
Dinner 20C, 2h air. With red meat. Good acidity, balance with fruit and tannins. Still dark, dirty, long, complexity. 92p and lovely!
Decant 2-3h, drink at 20c, good with heavy red meat and Do not forget garlic butter! Still fine in 3y, but will not improve. Drink 2023-24.

A fragrant and balanced nose filled with cigar box, ripe plums and blue berries, some tobacco, vanilla chocolate and leather. The palate is drier than what the nose suggests. But the density and length are there with prominent minerality in the full-bodied mid-palate. Quite a big and rounded structure, without the sweet fruit and rich chocolate elements. More herbaceous notes and some bitter tannins emerged towards the end of the palate. Promising nose but tannins are a tad strong and green that linger at the back of the tongue, which is a letdown. Some serious decanting might tame the tannins somewhat but it wear the wine out with extensive breathing. Pair this with a hearty meat stew for a more enjoyable experience.
Retasted in Jul 2022. The tannins have soften with profound bouquet and rich palate. The rest of the notes remain the same. No change in score.

This Troplong-Mondot 2007 is mainly built with Merlot (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon I guess). Beautiful deep garnet color. Visually the wine has begun its sweet evolution. The nose is mature, of a great refinement and a nice complexity: ripe fruits, mocha, fresh mint, notes of softwoods and a tip of fine tobacco. In the mouth, the attack is fruity and greedy. Then the “rigor” of Bordeaux settles: the breeding and the beautiful bitters are emerging. The wine is carried by an energetic acid spine. Medium body with slightly angular tannins. Nice volume. Well built final with a very long persistence. No demonstation of power here (the vintage surely), rather elegance and refinement. Very nice tasting phase! To uncork without hesitation! Perfume of wet roses, with a whiff of dark chocolate after decanting. This is velvety and has a nice warm finish. Lingering black fruit, earthiness, white pepper, tobacco, wet rocks. Slight edges but enjoyable, can drink now and should get better with time. Top 2 for tonight; first Troplong and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #114; Bordeaux: St. Emilion Grand Cru Classé (By me): Beautifully mature and rustic bouquet with dark forest fruits, minerals, toast and beautiful, luxurious oak. On the palate creamy dark berries, toast, black olives, beautifully dosed oak, good acidity and friendly tannin. A beautiful and lovely wine in a good drinking stage now, but no hurry at all.

Right out of the gate, nose displays signature Bordeaux must and earth notes. Tannic and mouthpuckering, major acidic backbone. Dark to the rim, no signs of age at almost 10 years. Needs more time, somewhat closed and unapproachable. Well built, but a little rough around the edges.

A fruit-forward wine from St. Emilion. Dark ruby color. Ripe plum, cherry, truffle, cigar, and vanilla. Medium-bodied and velvety. Fine tannins and nice acidic backbone. Still youthful, with many years left. This won't please those looking for a powerhouse-style wine. But for those looking for an affordable Troplong Mondot, this is an excellent option. If I had more in the cellar, I would wait 2-3 more years.

Earth and spice dominate the nose, with pencil lead and lots of oak. The palate is similar -- plums, graphite, sharp spice, grainy wood, dark chocolate with a hint of mint. All the elements are nicely balanced in this wine. Not spectacular but a decent effort from this middling vintage.

Pot-pouri, exotic spice, truffle, red currant, cedar; great fine tannins, elegant, touch of licoric in the long finish. This should be great in 5-10 years. Success of the 2007 vintage. 92-93

A very fine wine for the vintage and a very high score for a wine that actually delivers little primary fruit flavours either on the nose or palate. This is complex stuff with graphite, tar, licquorice and a hint of oriental spice in the mix. Decent if not exceptional length. Stood up well with confit d'oie - final glass without food highlighted the tannins but these were relatively smooth

Not so many notes, but the wine has a luxurious bouquet and certainly for the vintage a very good concentration. Dark fruits, some coffee, good acidity and tannin. Already a small feast and with some upwards potential. From 2016 onwards?

For the first time the chateau had the ability to conduct 5 different sorting's of the berries which was truly necessary in this difficult vintage. From yields of 27.5 hectoliters per hectare and a blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine was aged in 100% new oak and reached 13.5% alcohol. With licorice, herbs, kirsch, forest and bitter chocolate in the nose, the wine is medium bodied ending in a chalky, red cherry finish.

2012 CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/21/2012-5/24/2012 (Bordeaux, France): 85% Merlot / 10% Cabernet Sauvignon / 5% Cabernet Franc. Huge nose, displaying a ton of toasted oak up front, along with a generous amount of rich black plums, freshly ground coffee beans, and rich sweet blackberry jam. Quite fruit forward and almost extracted. A strong showing of mocha at first on the palate, as well as blackberries, dark cherries and plums, charred oak, a touch of tart red currants, with a slight green component to this. A bit of sandy tannins round this out with a moderate amount of acidity. Medium- length finish ending on notes of black cherries and roasted coffee beans. Not a ton of depth on the palate, a touch thin and simple, and this clearly needs some time in the cellar to integrate the oak. Good

Decanted for 2 hrs, 6 hours before restaurant. Nose showing off slightly with large sized bouquet. Notions of red fruit, licorice, oak and tones towards smoked meat. In the mouth it has a low to medium full body, balanced acids-tannin-fruit, good structure and is far from being overly modern in style. Aromas as previous tasters describe. Pre-peaking ~5 years. Drinking well today, though. Doubt it will ever cross over to 91p. Wife and I agree to not invest in more bottles. (Florelige, 外苑前)

Dense black fruit and plum, with spicy/woodsy note, pastry dough as well as aromas of forest and chocolate. Pretty bold, bigger bodied, and peppery tannins. ★

Pot-pouri, exotic spice, truffle, red currant, cedar; great fine tannins, elegant, touch of licoric in the long finish. This should be great in 5-10 years. Success of the 2007 vintage. 92-93

A little more straightforward than the last bottle but went very well with lamb. Good silky mouthfeel and reasonable length on the finish may well develop into a better wine over the next 5 years

Annual Grand Cru Tasting (Wijnhandel De Gouden Leeuw, Voorschoten, NL): Explosive, aromatic, charming nose, limestone, cherries, oak, excellent dept; attractive and well-balanced palate, slightly dry perhaps but very good length. An excellent 2007.

Not so many notes, but the wine has a luxurious bouquet and certainly for the vintage a very good concentration. Dark fruits, some coffee, good acidity and tannin. Already a small feast and with some upwards potential. From 2016 onwards?

Note after 45 minutes in decanter.Nose of leather, pencil shavings and cloves. Earth and undergrowth on the palate. A bit light with the weight reflecting the vintage. Nice wine for near term consumption.

Amazing aromatics of soft, sweet forest berries, pencil shavings, pleasant cedar and floral notes; medium body, rich, very sticky tannins, dusty, earthy aspect with soft licorice-tar in medium, slightly austere finish.

Good

Beautiful bouquet with smoke and black fruits. Same on the palate. See also previous notes. A luxurious wine which will improve with a few more years of ageing.

Beautiful and luxurious wine with toasted oak and ripe red as well as black berries. The tannin is quite firm and the wine fairly full bodied. Really a great effort for the vintage. Probably at its best between 2016 and 2021.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2007 Tasting (The Annex - Hollywood & Highland): Very pure and delicate aromas of red berries, herbs, plums, and flowers. I like the flavors here, they are earthy and herbal with ripe plum and other red fruits. Good underlying extraction with solid balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity.
