  • [SQN Dinner, Table, HK] A true amuse bouche if there ever was one; this hits the lips and palette and teases at what its true nature is. Smooth and delicious, it also had heavier shades of cabernet savignon, slight spice like a Rhone and overall the weightiness of the wine was anything but Rose. Like The Rejuvenators this didnt develop much through the night, easing into a chill mellow spot much later that spoke to its age (8 years in bottle).

  • I like this less than other sqn roses, alcohol is too dominant while the fruit starts to fade

  • They call it a rose, but it's the furthest wine from your typical rose. It looks like pinot. Needs to be served at warmer temperature than traditional rose as well. When too chilled the wine gave me nothing. As the juice began to warm and breathe, the wine's depth became more apparent, although it never really got to a place that blew me away. Perhaps it's past the drinking window. 85

  • Not your typical rose (as most have commented re this wine). Dark red color making hard to guess this to be a rose on appearance. Nose of overly ripe strawberries. Medium to full bodied, residual sugar is quite apparent, followed by a very brandy-like taste, though not as delicate or refined. The high alcohol level is very apparent. This is a tough wine to like or enjoy, and definitely not for everyone. I enjoyed it for its uniqueness, if nothing else.

  • Not a typical rose but held up well to all the other wines of the night.

  • Drank on election night. Sediment on the bottle, and a lot at the bottom. Darkest rose I've ever seen. Nice, fresh red fruit with no noticable alcohol (unlike the last bottle). Very well received.

  • Open for an hour. Very different wine. Deep color, some cherry and smoke on the palate but not unenjoyable.

  • As peculiar as a wine can be. Tonight the 2007 Stripes & Stars reveals a nose full of minerals, cream apple pie, brandy and sweet almonds. The palate is massive and provide an array of raspberry, watermelon and strawberry and there appears to be some residual sweetness lingering in the backend. The length on the finish is thrilling and lasts some 45 seconds. The wine appears to be fully mature. The frizzante experienced during last tasting is completely vanished. There is no sense of heat despite the rather massive alcohol.

It is not possible to enjoy this effort without getting your preconceptions out of the way. Some people might say this is not even a wine. I say it is, but it is surely very different from the types of rosés I am used to. This wine has a residual sweetness, a very fruity palate and to say the least a peculiar nose. It is not a normal rosé, but judging it for what it is, I still have to say it is a pleasant acquaintance.

I will refrain from providing a score tonight since the nose behaved in such a strange way. (nose = 82 p, palate = 89-90 p)

  • Day 1 - undrinkable. Day 2 - maybe because I drank it right out of the 35 degree fridge the cold hid this wines many flaws and I was able to take a few sips before dumping it out. I can't believe people pay $90 for a wine this awful. I've been on the SQN waiting list for 5 years. Manfred if you ever read these notes on your wines, please remove me from the list. I've had far better Roses for $10! Anyone in the Phoenix area that wants my last bottle, let me know.

  • The SQN Roses seem to have much to much alcohol. We poured it over ice and it made nice beverage.

  • Not particulary complex, tasty none the less. Never would have guessed this to be a rose with it's dark color and high alcohol. Just one bottle to consume. No reason to wait.

  • Great Grapes for a Great Cause SQN Tasting -- 4th Annual; 6/17/2011-6/18/2011 (Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC): nose was not pleasant on this and it suffered from the usual SQN Rose heat that is a big turnoff. pleasant flavor profile of sweet strawberry.

  • Tasted at a charity event (GGFAGC/11). The bouquet on this bottle was very musty and barnlike which was a turn off for me. The colours was a very light orange. This wine turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise with tangy, buttery tastes.

  • Frizzy phase has passed. Still rich flavors with a candy apple finish, perfect balance, poured for a table of friends, everyone loved it.

  • I still don't understand this wine. I expected something to evolve from the first time I tried it but it's perplexing. Yes, it is deep in color but I just can't describe it other then it packs a punch. Yes, there is effervescence and some cherry/strawberry notes but still very strange - 55% Syrah and 45% Grenache.

  • 9L party (Woodinville, WA): It's been just over a year since the first time that I got to try this wine. I knew what to expect, but I was still surprised! The color is even darker than I remembered, and there were some cherry flavors that were in place of what I remembered as strawberry flavors. It still had some nice watermelon notes, and the spritziness was also still there. I noticed the 15.8% alcohol right away this time as well. This bottle went fast, as the starter to a huge event, so there wasn't a chance to revisit to see it with some more air. Not a typical Rose, but a very fun bottle to start the evening with.

  • Great Grapes for a Great Cause SQN Tasting -- 3rd Annual; 5/7/2010-5/8/2010 (Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC): It cannot be... I actually liked this SQN rose quite a bit despite prior Roses not being overwhelmingly impressive (especially as QPR). Darker nose than the simplistic strawberry notes I have been trained to expect. Some blackberry and black cherry here as well. Light, refreshing mouthfeel, although it still unfortunately has some heat on the finish.

  • A peculiar if not altogether strange wine, though I somehow liked it.

When I tried it directly from the bottle the first thought I came across was: "Of course, if Manfred Krankl makes a rosé this is what it -could- be like...". The wine has a truly sweet scent and palate and a frizzly behaviour in the glass (disappeared after about 1.5 hour decant). There is practically no acidity at all and yes, it is as strange as this description...

Now you might wonder why I liked it?

Well, the answer is simple: First we tried it to some honey glaced oven roasted turkey breast filet with a salsa of Buffalo Mozarella, basil and extra smoked bacon. This was ok to the wine, but not a hit. Then we moved on to the cheese (which I had guessed beforehand could be an optional food pairing). This was a true hit. With Étyvaz (i.e. Gruyère), Morbier and fig marmalade, lots of the latter, the wine showed its best - a floral pattern of rose leaves, caramelized almonds and violets.

This is nothing for the "wine police". If you want a rosé to be a rosé do not buy this. But, if you are ready to try something different - maybe with some cheese and marmelade - my recommendation is to go ahead. Do not judge this wine, just drink it and evaluate it without preconceptions on what you -want- it to be like...

  • unlike any wine ive ever had but still cant recommend this. it was more like a cola/wine spritzer, had a ton of frizzante that never went away and lots of cherry cola going on. it was fairly acidic and off balance. it's not even particularly delicious, just weird.

  • Bold, new world rose that is disjointed. Frizz, cola and heat hide its desirable components, especially the Summer fruit. Structure feels heavy-handed and overbuilt. I like bold, unique and expressive wines, so I really wanted to like this one. Opened-up for an hour and paired with Japanese cuisine.

  • Sacred Cow is released into the wild (Restaurant X, Oklahoma, OK): WIMLNR

Tasted October 17, 2009 at an offline.

15.8% alcohol. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of scorched earth, black cherries, black berries and black raspberries. Flavors of Kirsch, black berries and black raspberries. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Really odd smelling and tasting for an SQN. Not sure what to make of this one. No rating.

  • This is a confusing wine. why is this called a rose? Has a bitter aftertaste. Effervescent and fairly full bodied

  • Let me begin by noting that I certainly realize and accept that there are plenty of fans of this winery. I will confess that I do tend to really like the label art. However, there is no denying the wines from Sine Qua Non are polarizing and count me in the group that finds them utterly undrinkable. A rosé that's darker than a lot of reds I drink and weighs in at 15.8% alcohol (at least that's what they confess to on the label?) Please. Rosé is supposed to be a refreshing and versatile wine to accompany food. This thing is best left to, well, I really don't know what it's best for. A weapon? Maybe fuel for a Mars rover? Perhaps best left alone as it's an unstable and unbalanced, over-the-top mess. It shows slight spritz with a blowtorch of alcohol that manages to even overpower the confected and candied fruit. There's a strange funky note to the wine that one can smell and taste over the alcohol and there’s an unpleasant and very strong bitter note. Just awful. It seems everything you can do to screw with a wine is done here. Worst wine of the year and a clear DNPIM (Do Not Put In Mouth) wine.

  • Medium to dark cranberry color and a nose that needs a little help opening up if served cold...but shows firm red berries with a nod to strawberry with coolness and opens to dark berries as it warms. Not for the light hearted, and when chilled can be deceiving...more approachable cool, and goes nuts as it warms...quite an interesting ride for a rose. Great personality of textures at both ends of the spectrum making for a cerebral rose...and yes, there was a tad of spritz on opening...not detracting for me...but there none the less that faded with time.

  • very different, smooth, enjoyed, could not put a name on the flavors, reminded me of fresh cab juice but was sweet and not sweet, dry and full. I would be happy drinking this every week

  • Not the same wine I drank a few weeks earlier. Potentially defective bottle. The effervescence of this bottle never burned off. Dark color. Off-putting flavors of vulcanized rubber and menthol mixed with cherry liqueur. Alcohol out of balance. I was waiting for the wine to turn around with more air time. Disappointing after having a previously great bottle of Stripes and Stars (rated 95 points on 6/13/09). We’ll see how the third bottle performs.

  • To call this full bodied is an understatement. It was the darkest rose I have ever seen by a long shot. It had some carbonation that was off-putting at first but it blew off quickly. This actually improved quite a bit with aeration…another first for a rose for me. I consumed it cooler than usual due to others notes and I think this was a good move. Pure red fruit, full bodied and nontraditional.

  • 15.8% alcohol. i've seen some very favorable recent TNs on ebob about this wine, so i decided to check it out. ouch. very sweet fruit of strawberry and cherry cola combined with a spritziness that is not pleasing. this, and last year's autrement dit, are very difficult wines for me to embrace. defies categorization; it's certainly no traditional rose, and that would be ok if there weren't so many aspects of the wine that are just plain... awful. there's no structure to this wine, no focus as a varietal. toss this into a blind tasting, and i guarantee it would be comical to hear the guesses. it's probably too old to drink any more, but SQN hit the rose heights with paegan poetry.

  • Amazing wine for a Rose. Typical SQN power that it seems only Manfred Krankl can harness. Deep garnet color. Slight effervescence upon opening which burned off after 15-20 minutes. Beautiful flavors of strawberries, raspberries, forest floor, licorice and gun metal. Very concentrated yet still in balance. Paired nicely with grilled salmon on cedar planks.

  • pop and pour, when cold it has a sweet watermelon nose like a jollyrancher but when it gets to room temperature it gets peppery with ripe meaty sweet cherries and a bit of baked bread. juicy and metallic on the palate with spicy earthy strawberries with a tinge of stem on the finish. Clean , crisp, with a medium length finish and so so acidity. Drinking very well right now!

  • Very dark for a rose, nice floral nose and rose petals. Pleasant strawberry notes, with a hint of minerality and good length. This may be the finest rose produced by SQN.

  • I've had red wines that are less full-bodied and flavorful than this Rosé from E&M. Interesting how much temperature impacts this one. At refrigerator temps, it's almost like a fruit pop, or a wine cooler. As it warms, however, it starts to exhibit nice strawberry and some blueberry. At room temperature, it's quite rich and, blind, I think I'd be hard-pressed to call it a Rosé. Good drink at a BBQ on a summer day!

  • Unlike and Rose I've ever had. A very dark color that if you just took a glance, might mistake for a lighter colored red. Took a whiff and had to laugh because the first thing that came to mind was that it smelled like grape juice (no sh#t, Sherlock, it is made from grapes) which seemed ironic. Dry, with a bit of heat, very interesting. A thinking man's Rose. 90pts.

  • Big Cabs With The Boys (Houston's): Very dark in color and without the viscosity of the previous version. Leaner styled but big fruited and tart. Cranapple like character but short and with a touch of spritz. A let down from previous efforts.

  • weekend wines: Wow - This is a monster Rosé! The color is a light red - a much darker color than I have seen before in a Rosé. Nice watermelon and raspberry flavors. Probably the richest and heaviest mouthfeel I have also had in a Rosé, and a medium-long finish that leaned toward tart cherries. Keep this cool, or it will start so show some heat - the alcohol % was well over 15%.

  • Significant secondary fermentation. Almost tasted like a sparkling Shiraz. High residual sugar also apparent. Totally bummed given how great previous Roses have been.
