From magnum. Mildly disruptive bite the first day, the second smooths into a very fine presentation of low-key raspberry fruit framed by crystal-clear acidity and a background of integrated tannins. It's surprising to discover how clear and fine, almost delicate, is the structure that emerges with time out of the plentiful fruit dominating these wines in their youth.

Such a wonderful showing! My last bottle, and I am truly sad about this. The wine is in a perfect place for drinking - resolved tannins, bright and vibrant texture, mellow, but the flavors are focused and pungent, and perfectly harmonious. Red fruit, dark fruit mineral, underbrush, just absolutely lovely wine.

Medium ruby. Back to form after a tired bottle in late 2011. Mixed red fruit that features sour cherries, clove and a touch of herbs. Medium weight with crisp, tart acidity yet wonderfully lush, mouthcoating feel accompanied by a dash of soil. This buttresses my argument that some of the best 2007 red Burgundy was made in Beaujolais. Ridiculously good.

Out of magnum. Light purple. A little closed at first pour, but opened rather quickly with air. Loads of black, blue and even some red fruits. Mineral, soil and game notes. Still tannic and structured. The nose keep changing every sniff. Yes, I would say Burgundian. I should have double decanted, the last couple pours clouded with sediment. For my taste I plan to hold on remaining bottles for a few more years to let the Tannins mellow. Good stuff!

Light but deepened in the glass. Blueberry fruit and a ton of pepper and oregano. Lean and tartly acidic. It did gain some black cherry fruit, but in truth, there is less fruit and sap than in past bottles. On the other hand, more complexity and soil-take your pick. Although I often opt for the more mature notes, in this case, I preferred version 1.0. Either the wine has begun its decline or this was a poorly stored bottle.

Just great wine, great. Soft and rounded now, with gamy and leathery notes emerging behind the dark fruit. On day two the wine has become utterly amazing, regaining a bit of brightness that wasn't there on day 1, and that sensation of tiny berries, thick skins, spice and soil. great energy and balance. I'm not sure how Beaujolais can be better than this. Now, let's see if I can have a little self control with my last bottle, and wait a while.

Medium ruby. The nose continues to broaden; in addition to beautiful red fruits, these adds some herbs as it goes. Strawbery and sour cherry, great sap and acidity. I love the '09 as well, but this vintage just has magical lightness and lift compared to the younger vintage. This remains one of my favorite Beaujolais ever and is in no danger of imminent decline. Last bottle. Enjoyed this with some fried snapper and garlic spinach. Decanted for an hour or so. Lots of cherry and citrus, with an undefinable fruit circling in the background. Acidity was a bit strong at first which went great with the fish. the last hour or so (after dinner) everything was in great balance. Wish I had more!

Medium color. Tart black cherry and earth. Classic light weight, some licorice, very lively acidity. Serious, no heft or unnatural sweetness. Marvelous wine. I just love the style of these '07s, which tend to be more appealing to Beaujolais purists than the bigger, riper, thicker 2009s.

In such a great place. There is still a lot of fruit, but some of it has taken on a secondary stewed nature, and there is an intensity to the midpalate, a certain kind of grip, that comes with a little bit of maturity. Perfectly balanced, beautifully textured, pure and strikingly harmonious - beautiful wine.

Illuminating Beaujolais Tasting-2007 to 2009 (Terroir, San Francisco): Medium depth. Caramel, spice and brambly red fruit. Very fresh and alive with spice, sap and zingy but well incorporated acidity. Really a great bottle showing beautifully. This got the tasting off to a flying start, and in fact, this held up in my mind as one of the best in this fantastic flight. Extremely Burgundian impression.

With Thanksgiving, from magnum. Too young to drink from the bottle, so tastes a bit thin and watery initially. After four hours +, the remains get surprisingly powerful and elegant, with nascent depth. Excellent potential, but wait or decant hours ahead of need.

Hommage a Marcel: Morgon feast (My Home): This is superb. A touch of licorice, nice mix of dark/red fruits with strawberry and blackberry. Great floral lift with violet. Pure with a Chambolle like texture. It's borderline Burgundy but still Beaujolais.

Excellent !

Light, initially faintly-sour, red cherry. Pale, smooth stones. A gentle density to the flow. Fresh, subtle, pretty. Good purity. A classy, darker, cured tone is beginning in the nose. An inspired and appropriate interpretation of the vintage. As per my previous bottle, I still think there’s a little evolution to come. However, overall, a bit understated for me. 89 on the night.

This wine is just getting better and better. It is easily the greatest cru Beaujolais I've ever enjoyed. This grand cru Beaujolais. Sort of Gevreyish. A wine that makes you sit up and take notice. Amazing aromas of asian spice, cinnamon, white pepper and dark cherry fruits that shift and morph over the course of the night. The palate is broad and layered with the wonderful Gamay funk of earth and stone. Lively acidity and minerals fill out the initial flavors, then sappy red fruits coat the midpalate. Really nice length on the finish. Just a georgous wine that is so enjoyable at this point. I have 2 bottles left and hope to God I can hold off to see how they develop. It's wines like this that make my day. The '07 is special. The '08 is not so special. We enjoyed this with crispy pork belly with shelled beans, cippolini onions, roasted garlic, baby carrots anda wonderful sauce. Also had Wagyu beef loin with roasted fingerlings and creamed spinach. YUM!!!

Well this bottle was not quite as nice as the one I had last week. Much more one dimensional with a bit too much acidity. While the last bottle got better over the course of a couple hours, this one I decanted and never came into balance. I'm going to wait awhile before diving into the last three.

The most complex Beaujolais I've had by a long way. Could easily have called this one from further North in Burgundy if served blind and had nothing in common with Gamay as I (thought!) knew it. The beauty in this wine is the attention to detail. Allowed to shine with no apparent winery thumbprint to camouflage the material. A very suave and elegant wine with none of the rough and rustic stereotype I had imagined. There are practically no edges to this and a palate that's pure silk and lace. Great.

Well, 5 months has done this wine well. More complex, and drinking great. Beautiful nose of sweet dirt, mushrooms and cherry. Palate includes these and a distinct meatiness that I usually equate with southern rhones and then finishes with a citrusy tartness. This went great with broiled trout and sauteed brussel sprouts.

Another delicious, food-friendly cru Beaujolais. Compared to the 07 Lapierre we drank last night, this offers a bit more tannic structure along with a mouthful of earthy red fruits. Similarly pretty and floral on the nose, light and silky on the palate - just great with a meal. Eminently drinkable, if not quite as irresistable as the Lapierre.

An early retaste and even better. Some funkiness is soon swamped by red cherry, raspberry, and violets-truth be told, a ravishing nose for which you would pay a lot more than this. We’re past the ‘harvest plus two years’ after which no Beaujolais can deliver full and fruity drama, but it still comes as a slight surprise that this famous cuvee is so light. That’s 2007 though. This is Cote-de-Beaune Beaujolais: clean, gentle aromatics of musky strawberry. Well-knit, small-scale-plush (round tannins, and less acidity that most Beauj and many Burg), pure and fairly long, this should make nice drinking for another 2+ years. I like the way the nose shimmers; could get more pungent, and the wine more elegant, soon. 89+ now.

Curious. This bottle wasn't nearly as good. Slightly earthy, dusty character to the fruit and very drying, grainy tannins on the finish without the fruit to cover them; really not pleasant at the moment. Minor TCA stripping? Closing down? Not sure, but have left most of the bottle to see what happens overnight. *1/2 ?

The previous bottle we drank of this belonged to a friend and had been open for several hours. While I enjoyed it, I found the flavor/aroma profile very plummy and purple. This second bottle, which we opened just before drinking, was quite different. I couldn't see the color so well because we picked it off the list at a restaurant with "mood lighting", but this one smelled far more like Morgon to me. Earth, spice, cherry, flowers... a very Pinot-like Bouquet, but wrapped in a juicy Gamay package on the palate. It's all here-- a mesmerizing bouquet, tons of food-friendly acid, the structure to age for a few years, and a finish that makes you crave the next sip. And all for what, $25 retail?

Medium red, not completely clear. Forthcoming aromatics of black raspberry and a whiff of earth. Bright fruit, a twist of acidity, lighter in weight than the '05, but still has presence and sappiness which are impressive for Beaujolais. Delicious and I imagine it would slay many a lower end Burgundy from this vintage.
Held up and even broadened further on the second night-impressive indeed.

Brought for dinner at Square Meal NYC. Great purity of fruit as always in Foillard's Morgon. I love this stuff. Strawberry, cherry mixed with prickly blue fruit, earthy aromas and good minerality. Rooftop BBQ. (Mark & Karrie's): Pure and expressive with red plum and cherry fruit and earth flavors with just a hint of spice. Crunchy, but not as taut as the '06. It's certainly youthful, but it's drinking deliciously now and is perhaps the ultimate wine for roast chicken. Low A-.

Youthful but delicious. Deeper and richer than the Lapierre Morgon I prefer, but no less interesting. Everything about it was purple-- the color, the plummy fruit, and the deep violet florals. My first taste from Foillard, but I will definitely buy a few of these to stash away for 3-5 years.

Beaujolais' Hidden Depths, presented by Tim Atkin MW (London): Used oak only - between one and ten years old. Unfined, unfiltered, unsulphured. A notably fragrant nose. Possibly slightly confected. Terroir! I have had this bottle five or six times (including 2006). For this price I can't think of a more expressive, exciting wine! Wonderful aromatics spanning the floral-fruit spectrum. Beyond those heady Cru Beaujolais dark fruits come pine sap and cedar, faint sweet vanilla enclosed in some real earthy wet grass thing. So big, yet so crisp.

An excellent Cote du Py. Nice minerality on the nose combined with very fresh fruit. In the mouth rich and fairly intense, yet very light and exceptionally well balanced. Nice long finish.

This got the tasting off to a flying start, and in fact, this held up in my mind as one of the best in this fantastic flight. Extremely Burgundian impression.

YUM!!!

89+ now.
