I recently acquired a few bottles of this and did not realize how maligned this wine was by the critics. While it is not a blockbuster by any means, the criticism seems overdone. It lacks some depth but still has plenty of life left in it with good vibrant acidity and typical mature Bordeaux flavors. Medium body and finish.
After a few hours of air, this took on considerably more weight. Pretty strawberry aromas wafting from the glass. Added two points to my earlier score.

My third bottle from a case that I've been slowly working through whenever the craving for an underripe, weedy BDX strikes me. This particular bottle, fortunately, was more like my first and therefore, modestly enjoyable. The nose is vegetal, herbal, a bit like "ditchweed" as some call it, with a bit of tobacco and hints of cassis lingering underneath. Astringent and clearly made from underripe and/or poorly sorted fruit (hail damage was at play, apparently), this is for fans of wines like Belair and Loire cab franc.

Ullage was base neck. Color was good, with no bricking. Aroma was rich, floral and inviting. The wine showed the complexity of maturity, but, incredibly, no signs of age. Tannins present but “dusty”. Balance and structure were excellent and mouthfeel and finish were excellent.

My last bottle of this wine was pleasant, if not necessarily worthy of the vintage or this estate. This one, however, was ugly, and makes me understand many of the other more negative reviews. The bottle variation here seems to be unpredictable, as these were two from the same case and with similar fills and corks in very good condition. This bottle shows the hallmarks of hail damage, extremely green, vegetal, thin and astringent. Like if you took a bottle of Belair and robbed it of any remaining fruit. Note even my anti-flavor wine elite palate found this enjoyable.

My friends Loek & Saskia married three years; a lovely dinner at Zoldering Amsterdam: the first impression was a fragile wine, but wit air the colour grew as a refined bouquet, still fresh, but not because old acidity, a smooth midtaste with the, fore me, open 'Domaine de Chevalier' style. 92 Points for the concentration and 1 point 'en plus' for the overall balance and condition. I guessed the wine and the vintage with a(n) indication/confirmation 'left bank'.

Stunning nose of menthol, herbs, cassis, and gravel. The palate thins but is fresh and lively, there is subtle cassis and berries and the lack of complexity ultimately does not detract from a great experience. A very good bottle.

This is an oft-maligned wine, as the estate suffered from hail damage that seems to have led to considerable bottle variation and general underachiever status. I love DDC from this era ('60s-'80s) and would agree that this is not where it should be considering the vintage, but it is still a very good to excellent wine. Very top shoulder fill on this bottle, with excellent color that shows only a slight bit of bricking at the rim. Has a savory, herbal nose, with forest floor, leather, plum and fenugreek notes. A bit lean and green, somewhat austere, but improving with air (and better on day 2). Intense tart cherry flavors dominate the palate, with star anise and cardamom notes. My first bottle, and I'm happy that it exceeded my expectations, but this is definitely an AFWE (anti-flavor wine elite) style claret made in an "old skool" style.

Bought 5b for 39/b (after all taxes and fees) at a Chicago auction 25 years ago; this is #2. Only the last 1/4" of the cork broke off on opening with stain limited to that. Decanted with normal (heavy) sediment for its age. Dark purple; fragrant mature blackcurrant, some old leather; old cassis, sweet tobacco, bit of graphite; some persistence. Almost delicious, glad I have a few more. Held well over the 2 hours of dinner. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation (see earlier posts for my 4-category, non-point rating system): This is outstanding- when considering quality, age, and price.

After reading some recent CT notes about this wine we remembered that we had it in our cellar purchased in 1985 and never tried it! It is a beautiful mature wine now. Dark garnet red color, slight nose initially which opened up after 90 minutes of airtime. Medium weight on palate, dark fruit with mostly tertiary flavors. No off flavors, tannins fully integrated, and a very smooth lengthy finish. No excuses for not trying it sooner but it was worth the wait.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this bottle. Great vintage and a strong producer, but Pessac-Leognan was the victim of hail in 1982 and I’ve heard many of these wines suffered. Luckily my bottle was in perfect shape and my experience was much more positive. Garnet in color with medium(-) intensity. Gorgeous, complex nose. Earth, forest floor, smoke, tobacco, cedar and mushroom all showing prominently with a backdrop of dried lavender, dried violet, dried red cherries, dried cranberry, raspberry and bell pepper. All the same flavors appear on the palate with the addition of leather, spice, and black pepper, all of which is very nicely integrated. Upon opening the fruit is muted, but the flavor profile really comes to life at the 45 minute mark and peaks around the 2 hour mark. Tannins are fully resolved at this point with medium acid. This wine is fully developed, on its inevitable slow decline, but still outstanding, thoroughly enjoyable and very much in balance. 95/100

From a stunning vintage, this 1982 presents you with a deep garnet appearance in the glass. The nose is mature, showing hints of earth, mushroom and a more tertiary sense of sweetness. On the palate, the wine is elegant, with lean dried fruit and velvety soft tannins. Although this wine has began its inevitable decline, we caught it in a good place, drink now!

On a gentle downslope with tertiary notes - like many producers in Bordeaux they have been the beneficiaries of recent investment. Faded red in colour, lots of mushroom and faded fruit.

very close to my last tasting note: garnet with orange tinged rim - beautiful old Bordeaux with mature red fruit, some bell pepper, earthy and tobacco overtones - wonderfully smooth silky mouth with good acid-fruit balance and totally resolved tannins, though acid predominating over the fruit now - long 20-30 sec finish - this wine is still drinking beautifully - it may not express classic Graves gravel and minerals, but it epitomizes mature Bordeaux - may not be a classic Graves, but it is a classic DdC! - this is why you keep great Bordeaux for 37 years

Served blind, probably because David and I spent too much time talking Bordeaux at a Rioja tasting. Surprisingly, there's nothing here that speaks of Graves - it doesn't have the strong gravel or tobacco notes I typically expect from there, rather it's showing plenty of mature red fruit and earth tinged with leather and a green bell pepper note. Drinking very nicely now with the structure largely integrated, a lovely wine.

Domaine de Chevalier 82 – already past its peak but still drink beautifully. Tertiary nose, leather, earthy, mushroom something like a sous bois that took one of the guests to say this was the most Burgundian of the three. Still holding a nice palate, clean, straight forward. Good drinking. Bottle had mid-shoulder level.

Bought off retail shelves (yesterday!) yet in beautiful condition, will last a good deal longer.
A very relaxed, open knit, low alcohol, mature, classic claret. Tannin now very soft but the acidity is still fresh. Cabernet, cedar, tobacco. Quite lovely aged character dominates.
Drink now, won't improve but given its track record so far it should hold (under good conditions) for another decade, perhaps even more..

Wow, this bottle exceeded my expectations. Garnet color with peripheral bricking. Deep, bright and rich nose with great balanced red and dark fruit, earth/dry leaves, hints of tobacco. Incredibly smooth in the mouth with a lingering finish. The best wine tonight.
Second Sunday Group: 2007 California Cabs/blends (R&D's): Aromas of herbs, dust, sweet tobacco and red fruit. Balanced and pretty, with red fruit, herb and tobacco qualities on the palate. Holding up well, but I wouldn't let it go too much longer.

Medium-deep, clear, crimson in color. Fragrant, attractive & complex nose of well developed ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries and currants with pine tar notes, cedar, tobacco, earthy, dusty, minerals, gravel, leather, lovely floral notes, some bell pepper, exotic spices and dried herbs. Medium bodied of well developed & well integrated, balanced, ripe red fruit flavors of cherries, dried cranberries & plums with herbs, some spices, earthy gravel/stony and minerals. Long lingering smooth finish with a touch of crisp acidity. A lovely mature claret. Drinks quite well at present and do not see any further development from additional aging.

A night of Bordeaux as Tom Reddick pays a return visit to NYC. (Le Philosophe.): Controversial only in determining what was wrong with it, with the group split between it being obliterated by brett, or being corked. I never got any tca on the nose, or in the mouth, but got plenty of Brett. However, going back to the wine later in the evening, what fruit was there at the onset had left and the wine had a tell tale clipped finish that tells me there was indeed some tca around. NR.

Delicious, fresh and vibrant. Gained more gentle blackcurrant fruit as it opened up in the glass, so still got life in it yet. Not as much minerality as I have come to expect from old Bordeaux, but I don't drink a lot of Graves....

Purchased in the mid-80s by a generous friend, correctly stored and in perfect condition. Utter lack of ponderous '82-itis, at once rich and (especially for its official status) elegant. Long, balanced, effortlessly confident finish. A terrific showing.

As some said, it has past its prime, but it was still good. It evolved in something better after a 2 hours. Sent of leaves, mushrooms and strawberries at first. Still has a bit of fruit left. Nice color. Surprisingly still had a good acidity, I really didn't expect that. Definetly better accompanied with food, it was good alongside with Dijon mustard rabbit and noodles.

I was a little surprised by the negative review of this wine. While it is ceretainly not a blockbuster and has a lot less concentration than most '82s, I thought it was a very pretty little Claret. Relaxed and thoroughly within itself, it possesed a delicacy that I thoroughly appreciated (especially with some grilled lamb). It also tastes like a DdC, even if it isn't the best one, which is also nice.

Pale ruby core, pale mahogany rim. Very open nose, grassy and herbaceous, touch of cedar. Sweet, autumn fruits, not much body left. Ome dried fruits, some woody spices. Medium length at best. Tired badly over the evening. Nevera great DdC but a pleasant old lady.

Probabaly a few years past its best drinking state, ruby/brown with not much nose other than green herbs and loamy earth. Thin and light in the palate with almost no detectable tannins, tart, not much fruits, river rock and asian spices with a short finish. Quaffable but not much else.

The medium jeweled ruby color was the best thing about this wine. The nose had leafy tobacco, and a graves smell with some dark cherries. On the palate the wine was thin, weedy and acidic, with dry cranberries, some stony fruit and a clipped finish. 79 pts.

Probably starting to fade, I do assume it has never been a good red. Unidimensional nose, at least with some impression. The palate shows a lightweight with red fruits. Little Cassis though. Looses on the palate in seconds. Disappointing in a very good Bordeaux year.

I can only assume that the bottle was flawed, as it smelled strongly of vegetable stew, and not at all in a good way. It was...interesting on the palate. A few sips was enough for me.

Fabulous and not going to get any better. Decanted for 1.5hours and it was still opening up after 3.

Lovely sweet fruit still going strong. Still missing the minerality I associate with older Bordeaux, but this was a very fine wine.

Considerable fade at the rim. Cherry red/ruby core.; Strong herbaceous notes on the nose. Spice - very little fruit; Quite light on the palate - nice texture. Earthy gravel notes of terroir. Past its best but an interesting wine.

Good color but lacks verve and personality. Would not guess Graves blind. Perhaps in an intermediate stage. Not flawed but not an exciting ‘82.
