DRC stems and aromatics with lovely sweetness. The wine was structured and harmonious. Perhaps just lacking the power I would expect from 02. It felt more 01 to me. Still excellent. Drinking fabulously.

One of the best DRCs I have tried. Outshine a 2000 La Tache. The nose is probably the best part. So much perfume and we all thought Vosne. Lovely integrated tannins and for me, this is at its peak. A nice long finish. From VO for TL birthday.

Montrachet and DRC (Chicago, IL): 02/10 DRC Ech + GE. The most enchanting nose of the flight with intense and alluring black cherry, infused with stems, Vosne spice and emerging earth tones. The palate is giving, fully approachable with loosening structure. This is at peak, and while it should hold, no upside from here.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux / Grands-Echezeaux 2002/2010 (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): In 2002/2010 Echezeaux / Grands-Echezeaux horizontal / vertical flight. Glorious aromatic start that is unmistakably Domaine de la Romanée-Conti with its spice and array of bright red fruit. Similar flavors with wonderful balance and good weight, but without the density and explosiveness of the Grands-Echezeaux.

Dark, dark ruby red garnet color. No flaws. Major rim variation. Mild sediment. Opening the bottle, the most exceptional old world wine nose ever! Rank, dirty, and foul, we loved it! I have never been privileged to enjoy this bottle previously, and, it is (was) the only in our cellar. My best determination: Beyond peak, but, extremely drinkable. Dark florals and fruits that faded quickly after opening. Low tannin. Low acid. Low alcohol. Medium finish. Paired absolutely perfectly with pan seared, coffee rubbed duck breast. Sides, were Japanese eggplant and kale and micro-green salad. We were, to say the least, so very, very happy. My recommendation: Drink now.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Expressive nose displaying youthful dense sweet red fruit, strawberry and rhubarb tart, more pronounced stem compare to the 01, rose, cinnamon, tree bark and earth. Excellent concentration, generous red fruit, quite rich and sweet yet showing excellent overall balance, good acidity, a hint of very fine tannins and a long rich red fruit driven finish. This bottle is more youthful and slightly bigger than the 01 but not as well integrated and harmonious. Although it is showing beautifully, it also lacks the finesse of the DRC GEs and RSVs. This can improve for another decade or two.

Overtly spicy and whole cluster on the nose. Loads of spice box and Asian spices. This 02 is far more expressive than the 05 in the next glass. Aromas are wafting from the glass in layers. Really sensational wine that is open with loads of red and black fruits, minerality, tangy acidity, cherries and great balance and texture. Others liked the 05s better but tonight I thought the 02s were the winner.

Noticeably more bricked than the 99 Rouget Echezeaux. Full on DRC spice, mushrooms, hint of leather, earth, and a whisper of reduction. Very similar in profile on the nose compared to the RSV a week ago. The palate is just a bit short in comparison. A very good wine but I'm not convinced this will get better with age.

Drinking this wine has downgraded every other wine I have had. I have had a lot of high end cult classics, this is easily the first to live up to its name, and price point. Remarkably well rounded, seemless, and effortlessly endless with depth. This is wine is unquestionably perfect.
Medium ruby color lightening up slightly towards the rim. Amazing nose of plum, also some raspberries, underwood, cedar, christmas cake, touch of white pepper, star anise, some stems but very well integrated. On the palate there is also mainly red fruit, peppery notes, sweet spices, also some animalic notes like beef blood. Medium+ bodied, dense but weightless, with medium+ acidity and medium tannin that is like pure silk. Long and complex finish. An incredibly silky, pure and smooth Burgundy with great freshness. Wow what an experience!

Ceres Table (Chicago): Very similar to the bottle last year (apparently this is now an annual thing). The spiced and dried floral notes on the nose are incredibly alluring and the grip and vibrancy on the palate is outstanding. This is definitely my favorite 02 DRC to drink today.

Exotic spice on nose, similar to '99, but I'm not nearly as thrilled with this '02 as I was in my previous notes. It seems more muted than it did previously, I guess this one is slumbering. The nose is very intriguing and I'd be curious to try this wine again in 8-10 years. In sum, a quality wine that should rest in your cellar for quite some time.

Drank over 2 hours. This was ready to go out of the gate. Absolutely superb spice on the nose and palate. Similar to my last bottle though not as stemmy. Birthday Celebration (Grace Restaurant, Chicago IL): Opened an hour before serving, not decanted and served alongside the 02 Prieur. This was much more restrained than the Prieur. Crushed red berry and floral on the nose with some dense brown spices and notes of soy. Firmer red berry fruit on the palate with finely ground brown baking spice. Dense and well structured palate; if I had any in the cellar I'd probably give it another couple years based on this bottle. Medium body and finish.

Drank over 3 hours. Deep complex nose of red fruit, asian spice, dried flowers and some celery notes. More dark fruit on the palate, spice and stems were present. I must say I am a bit disappointed. I remember this wine to be a lot better and after having a gorgeous 2002 La Tache a week back I had big expectations for this Echezeaux. It showed ver little of that elegance and nice pinot fruit I remember. Maybe it was something wrong with this bottle.

Bonham's and Butterfield Pre-auction tasting (San Francisco): OMFG nose. Crushed berries, violet, intense even with the few sips that I got in my glass at the tasting; structured, tannic, but approachable. Near perfect. My first taste of a DRC (especially from a great vintage) and I'm impressed.

94-95 pts

Medium ruby colour but bright. Nose is captivating from the first whiff, elegant and classy. Sweet spices, especially cinnamon but also forest like aromas like leaves, bark of trees and barely ripe red berry fruit. Texture is silky, flavours are almost sour as the fruit flavours are barely ripe but the wine is balanced and extremely long. Young wine that will surely evolve to much greater complexity but is drinking beautifully now in its fruity phase. Exceptional wine.

My first DRC experience. Spicy/dusty/exotic nose of red fruits, cloves, orange peel and dusty floral notes. Palate holds plenty of tension - acidity and red fruits are perfectly balanced yet racy and exciting. Flavors of dusty raspberries, black tea, and cinnamon spices with a slight woody note. More swirling brings aromas of baker's spice and some creamy red fruits with a mineral edge. Fantastic.

DRC vs the World Blind Tasting (St. Regis Hotel, Singapore): This was a star of an Echezeaux. Cloudy in the glass, it had the wildest, most clearly whole cluster nose of the three DRCs, all toasty Chinese herbs, angelica root, wild wood spices and meat alongside sweet red cherries and some beautiful floral notes. Lovely - reminded me ever so much of one of Domaine Leroy's downgraded 2004 wines. The palate was complex and intriguing and really elegant for its terroir. There was a fresh, brightness to its red fruit expression, more wood spice, all warm and earthy, and infused with tea and that herbal essence that I picked up on the nose. There was great presence on the mid-palate and then a long, haunting finish with floating floral notes filling the mouth. I can so see how this wine would have been awkward and ungainly in its earlier years, fine tannins were still making their presence felt with a touch of firmness even now, but this is certainly maturing quickly with the promise of a stunning adulthood ahead. The most forward of the three DRCs, I can see this slowly entering into its drinking window in the next couple of years.

A bit harder to fall in love with than the La Tache, this was a bit of an awkward goofy teenager, but you could tell it was going to turn into a beauty, had the same forthright acidity of the 01 La Tache, but was generally darker fruited, plenty of stuffing though, full of dark cherry notes.

02 DRC GE and Eche drunk side by side. First time for me with the GE and it had a gorgeous and in fact awe inspiring nose. Deeper, funkier, and belied its age. Great stuff. The nose on the Eche was pure perfume. On the palate, the Eche was lighter and less sophisticated. Overall, the GE is a step function better. Both were fun, and no reason not to pop one early now and then if you've got a bunch.

DRC Holiday Lunch - '99, '02, '05 (Scottsdale, AZ): Alluring Vosne spice bolts out of the glass from the first sniff of the first pour, this wine is ON. There's Ech and there's ECH, and this is the latter my friends. Hooah, the boy's alive! I smelled this for about 20 minutes before tasting, the palate was almost superfluous with such an enjoyable nose. Almost. This is a lovely wine, accessible, and I enjoyed it tremendously UNTIL I drank the '02 GE and RSV alongside it -- next to those, the finish on the Ech seemed wanting. On it's own, a delightful treat.

A delicious dinner in Brooklyn. (Suzanne & Kenny's): Showing rather unevolved. Pure cherries and strawberry dominate with good acid levels and full tannins, but it's showing no secondary development whatsoever. The sweetness and focus of the fruit is thoroughly enjoyable, though this was certainly killing a baby. I believe this was double decanted earlier in the afternoon. A rare treat. Many thanks to Suzanne for opening one up in the name of science, but hold, hold, hold! A-.

Medium red color that is unfined, with a youthful hue. Aromas of red berries, cherries, strawberries, earth and a hint of iodine. The taste has a good amount of fruit, strawberry and red currant. Some animal tones comes in on the midpalate and gains strenght onto the aftertaste. Nice long aftertaste, and in total a very delicious and nice wine.

Another Casual Burgundy Dinner (Oceanique - Evanston IL): Starts with great aromatics - lots of clove, peppercorn, and cinnamon and dense fruit. Taste start similarly with black pepper and dense red fruit. Already well balanced, this showed a long finish that highlighted the Asian spice particularly well. Needs at least five more years. Three votes for WOTN and consensus #1.

Great nose of soft red fruits (strawberry/raspberry) on opening. Good acidity and similar mouthfeel with a decent length finish... could have been a number of "new world" Pinots. As it opens up, develops more floral (rose petal/violets) on the nose as well as some black fruit on the palate with a greater finish. After a couple of hours open, some spices emerge on the nose, and complexity is fantastic on the palate. 30-45 sec finish... outstanding wine at that point. Wanted to see how DRC's '02s were.. and this is a GREAT indication.

Long finish that emphasized the spice. Great grip and complexity although at times I found the stems too evident from the whole cluster fermentation.

Aroma: juicy fruit, spice, subtle, aromas shift constantly - an absorbing experience Palate: The first really good burgundy I've had and it offers a range of tastes. A cherry blend base with smoke, flowers, spice, dirt occuring in an undulating fashion.

Amazingly opened after bottle breathed for 1+ hrs. Much better than another 02 DRC Echezeaux drank a year ago. Great complexity and length. Many more years to go.

Represents the structure of the great vintage 2002, perfect ABC, dramatic Pinot Noir...the best Echezeaux I ever tested.
Aftertaste is very nice and silky...long and linger...
Drink now - 2018....92-93/100....
