Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Oily and thick, with some unpleasant bitter notes on the finish immediately had me thinking Rhone white, but the acid profile was definitely more Chardonnay. Just not my cup of tea, no matter what.
I found one lonely bottle on a recent inventory. Drank with sushi and blew everyone away who was lucky enough to taste. Expressive, impeccably balanced taking on subtle Carmel notes. Fabulous California Chardonnay.

The wine that salvaged a night of disappointing tasting. A terrific wine that is at the end of its drinking window. You can hold, but it is not getting better in my view. Better to drink now.

Popped and Poured Medium yellow, green tinge; huge ripe pineapple nose- you have to love pineapple to drink this "early"- after 3 hrs the pine apple was almost gone- replaced by hazelnuts, sweet dough, lime, and light allspice aroma's; big body through out the evening- very forward, did not seem completely knit together; very full body, smooth, rich creme brulee type of finish; very long, very sl hot at the end. I'd guess this bottle had 5-10 yrs of life left.

Solid Wine. Got a bit tired faster then I expected and showed a bit more ethanol characteristics as well. Very standard Aubert type of wine, fat, a bit buttery, with some spice and gobs of fruit. This didnt quite hold up to my expectations compared to other Auberts

Based on some recent CT notes I was expecting this to be quite old and possibly over the hill. This bottle was certainly not. Straw colored, nice inviting nose. A big wine with a long mineral finish. A bit of bitterness in the finish that resolved as it opened up. If I had to complain I would say that there was a touch of unabsorbed oak here that detracts -- but otherwise excellent. I'll open my last bottle in the next year or two. No rush - at least for my bottles. (Stored at 57 degrees its entire life)

Enjoyed at dinner at Michael Mina in SF earlier this week with a good friend from Los Angeles. His first Aubert and it did the usual magic: “Where can I get these?”
Lovely, light golden color, with a beautiful nose of citrus (lime and orange) oils, whiffs of smoke and spices (ginger? and some baking spices), and some buttery shortbread. It had that amazing mouth feel of both oiliness and minerality that Aubert seems to master, and it was a little creamier and richer than the ’03 Reuling I enjoyed later in the week. A truly enjoyable and memorable wine, with rich lemon-lime oil, spices, smoky vanilla and buttered bread notes, with perfect balance and a long, smile-bringing finish.

This was a very dynamic bottle of chardonnay. The nose was very nice and balanced while the color was a nice golden shade. The taste was one of pear and some citrus and it had a nice complex profile from start to finish.

Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Wonderful nose of toast, vanilla, nutmeg and paraffin. However, the palate was not as good as the nose showing some fairly straightforward notes of of vanilla, creme and spiced pears. Medium acidity, full body. Drink over the shorter term in my humble opinion. Giving it a WIML92 but was tempted to dock it 1 or 2 more just because the palate was uninspiring.

Dinner: I am very bummed there will be no more Aubert Quarry. Seeing this wine start to round the corner and develop more complexity makes me more sad. It still has a nice stony but there is also layers of tropical oils and lemony fruit. Still rich but less buttery. I think a few more years are still in order.

something was off with this bottle, and i can't figure out what it is. the nose was fine, yet the finish was metallic, the acidity was out of wack, and the finish bitter. ultimately, i think it was corked.

Wow -- love where this bottle is on the evolution scale right now. Expansive nose of wet stones and subtle tropical notes that beg you to bury your nose in the glass with layers and layers of complexity. Very minerally but with tons of stone fruit flavors and spices with some hazelnut notes on the long finish. For us, this just blows away the 2003 PM portfolio.

What a difference a year (or a different bottle!) makes! This bottle was a full step above the 2003 Quarry that we had almost exactly a year ago, and it's developed from a loud, blousey wine into one that manages to maintain that sex appeal but layer a lot of sophisticated, mineral, white fruit tastes on top of it. This one has everything is spades - a nose that's replete with white melon and orange fruit; a mouth that's full of ginger and white fruit and nuts and suave rocks, and a length that is most excellently composed of rocks and orange fruit.
While this wine doesn't remind me of the 2004 Ritchie that I love, it's at the same level, and it's a very real pleasure to drink. I like this wine now significantly more than I liked it a year ago, and I'm thrilled!

I question whether this wine will ever absorb the wallop of oak as it presented tonight. It was quite good with citrus flavors along with lots of vanilla and toasty oak. The flavors were mostly singular without the integration of the 2002. And there was little minerality that was present in the 2002. Hopefully it will improve with further aging.

Opens clean and full. Rich, nice mouhfeel with a decent mid palate but an excellent length. Flavors of ripe orange pit fruit, nuts, and vanilla. I found this wine to be lush and all that, and on that front it's a winner. This wine is not suave and sophisticated; it's loud and sexy.

Tasted May 14, 2006 at home with Mother’s Day dinner. Opened and served 30 minutes later in a Spiegelau Authentis Rot Wein glass. Light yellow color in the glass, fairly clear hue throughout. Nose of hazlenut, creme, lemon and dutch apple pie. Flavors of vanilla, apricot, cookie dough, apple with quite a bit of underlying minerals. Interesting that when pulling air across the palate it feels almost viscuous and creamy with some toasted almond notes. Good acidity, very nicely balanced. Can be drank now but I'll be waiting a little while longer myself. If opening now don't be afraid to decant for an hour inside the cellar. Should hold if not improve slightly for 5 more years. Based on the $60.00 purchase price I paid direct from the winery I’d say the value here is highly recommended.

It was interesting to taste this wine the night after we opened a good 2002 Mersault. Deep gold, with slight cloudiness. Tangerine, cantelope, white flowers, with a hint of petrol. Minerals galore. Lots of oak, which is well balanced by the fruit. Compared with the Mersault, this was richer, oilier, and fruitier. Great stuff.

Smooth and luscious, somewhat lighter than the Ritchie and Lauren. Nose somewhat subdued. Tastes more minerals than in your face fruit. Served alone without any food ( as I had it ) I would have preferred a more distinct nose and a bit more fruit, but I'm guessing it would pair great with many dishes, adding richness without getting in the way.

Ridiculously good...I can't seem to figure out which chardonnay I like better betwee, the Quarry, Lauren and Ritchie. I always think it's the Lauren until I try the other two. The Quarry was as smooth as they come. I generally chill all my wines at 55 degrees but it could stand to be a bit colder (not much) to add some crispness. The bouquet was great. We served it with appetizers for a dinner party and our guests just raved...well done.

Blind Chardonnay Tasting (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Blind tasting. Over-ripe flavors that came across as flabby on the finish. Didn't seem to have quite enough acidity. Alcohol a bit too prominent for me. I was surprised when this was unveiled as Aubert, which I''m just hoping is too young and will integrate better with a few more years. Served with baked halibut with fresh pesto, sautéed kale and spinach with olive oil, garlic and lemon, and heirloom tomatoes. This is the finest CA chardonnay we have consumed this year. Light yellow, very viscous. Superrich bouquet of melons, tropical fruit, and smoke. Tremendous multifacted extract, laden with glycerin, almost syrupy oozes across and stains the palate -- a very tough act to follow -- yet a soaring mineral finish brings everything into balance and sharp focus. Something of a high-wire act, but the finish and almost unbelievable balance makes this a really exciting wine.
