The color is more developed than the nose or the palate. It still tastes fresh but there is a little heat on the finish but not highly perceptible. The nose is potent, the palate is silky, the finish is long. Well made wine. Wish it was less than 15.25%ALC so I could drink more!

Pulled this 2003 RRV pinot from a dark forgotten corner of my cellar. Now coming up on 10 years old, and I see that there hasn't been a tasting note written on this for about 3 years, so yes, it is a straggler of sorts. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a wine with some fascinating reduced elements - its rich fruit now maturing. No disjointed elements, no excessive heat, no pummeling over the head with Parkeresque extraction. The alcohol levels and new oak that almost certainly were there (it was 2003 in California after all) have now faded to the background, and a more graceful, mature lady has emerged. Subtle bricking at the edges. I only wish I had another bottle to try in 2 more years, just for curiosity's sake.

This has changed since last tasting five years ago. Now it tastes less like a pinot and more like a raspberry liquor, albeit a very delicious liquor. Gone are the more subtle wood and spice notes. Also the alcohol is very prominent. But the texture and pure hedonistic delight are still there. This is a wine I would love to watch for years, but this was, alas, my last bottle.

One of the first KB's I ever had....and one of the best imo. Still drinking well....big sandalwood/spice box spice, cola tingle, forest floor mulch, high toned wild berry/cherry/raspberry fruit. Still shows the Dr Pepper, brown sugar, and some Amaretto, dried herbs, leather....super tasty stuff, but does carry heat still, which I wish it wouldn't. Love this wine...but after falling for the Burg bug....I can see why this might be off putting to some. The heat makes me knock it down a couple, but it is still a great drink. So long '03 RRV...my last bottle.

Once a favorite. Still a monolithic wine, but now with fading candied fruit and noticeable heat on the finish. No complexity or benefits from bottle age that I can detect. A little ripe on finish, but not overly pruny. Very advanced for its age with noticeable browning at the edges. Not the train wreck that is the 2003 Koplen, but at most, 87 pts. Drink up.

Soft orange garnet red turning to watermelon at the rim. Nice complexity on the nose with forest floor, cinnamon, cherry, and raspberry liqueur. The palate is intense with alcohol and flavors of earth, spices, and sweet red fruits. Not very refreshing as it is heavy and inky through the finish. Great if you want to please the masses and get buzzed after one glass. Not what I am looking for in Pinot but if you like the style this is a good effort nonetheless.

Dark red and very clear. Unmistakably pinot noir with cherry and cranberry nose. The wine offers a full mouthfeel of red fruit, with a hint of strawberry, and really coating the tongue with abundant flavor. There is a subtle earthiness in the background. Finish is long - about 25 seconds. The last of the first KB I fell in love with -

Medium body with spicy berry fruit, licorice, and earth. Seems to be in balance right now and drinking pretty well. Moderate acid at the finish keeps this from being a bit boring. The last vintage from KB before they started producing thier Juicy Juice series of garbage.

Popped and poured at a local restaurant. Immediately, the nose showed mostly funk and heat. Fortunately, that blew off fairly quickly. The wine opened up over the course of the couple of hours showing raspberry, some spice, and some candied cherry. I left one glass for the next day. Interestingly, the wine seemed to have lost some of the fruit and it seemed out of balance as compared to the first night. Not sure if that is a sign of reaching the end of it's drinking window or not. But if I had more, I would drink then now.

The color was dark red with some lightening at the rim. Classic RRV nose of raspberry and cola. The palate was better than previous bottles, but there was still a bitter note that was slightly distracting. This full-bodied wine offers raspberry, spice, and espresso. The finish was short but there was plenty of flavor. Overall, this is a good wine, but the bitter coffee flavors seem out of place for pinot noir. Maybe the toast on the barrel was too much for the fruit.

Dark purple, fading, slightly to garnet. Cherry, spices, and a little vanilla on the nose, with the barest hint of a more earthy/mushroomy/forest floor type note. Cherry, darker fruits, with, again, a hint of a earthy/tea element on the palate. Much lighter weight on the palate than I expected. Very nice.

This wine has an explosive nose of dark cherry and raspberry that bounds from the glass. In the mouth, it is confected with a raspberry cough syrup profile intermingled with tea leaves. It is certainly plush on the palate, but it seems clumsy and awkward without enough acidity to carry through on the fruit. The finish is long, but the overripe raspberry does not appeal to me. This was from a 375ml bottle, so it is certainly more advanced than regular bottles. I don't see it getting more focused or aging particularly well.

Consistent with previous tasting notes, just a bit of funk upon opening that took about 15 minutes to blow off. I'm skeptical that this will get much better than it is right now, so open one and see what you think.

Found in rack; this 'escaped' CT. Wonderful treat. Huge expressive nose with strawberry and pine forest floor in the front but with plenty of other notes blending in (e.g., baking spice, vanilla, cherries). Great palate of layered fruit, which fills the entire mouth and then cleanses with in balance acidity and soft tannins. Glad to revisit as I think this is a notch or two up from last summer's bottle.

Had it last night at dinner with bbq tri-tip. I love this wine and it is my favorite KB bottling. Good balance of wonderful red fruit flavors and good acidity with still a bit of tannins that were not obtrusive in anyway. The aromas and flavors that go on and on. My last bottle..goodbye old friend.

Fairly muted nose (though I have a mild cold) is followed by vibrant, rich Pinot with Pomegranate, rhubarb, and a bit of citrus on the finish. Great pairing with Pork loin and Boursin potatoes. Lingers well and still has 5+ years by my estimate.

This was fantastic. Immediately out of the bottle it was muted and smelled a little off. In just 15 minutes, the wine opened up beautifully. Very well balanced with a mixture of black cherry and blackberry. Full round moutnfeel with baking spices on the finish. This was a very rich and lush wine without being over the top. This probably could still go a few more years. Wish I had more of this vintage to test it out.

Still a baby. Needed about 2 hours in the decanter to open up . When it did, it revealed a nose of plum and blackberry, with some heat. On the palate, dark cherry, a touch of Asian spice, clove, and cola. Velvety, but also a bit hot and oaky. Pushes the edge of extraction, but does not go over the line. Very good, but would be better with less heat.

Opened for about eight hours, then recorked and brought to the restaurant where we drank this, the wine was totally ready to go. No overwhelming alcohol that others mention. The wine is definitely ripe and bursting with crushed cherry juice aromas, some vanilla, a friendly puppy of a wine, ready to play. Nicely balanced on the palate, which may have been a surprise given the nose. A definite lushness, put with enough bite to counteract the sweetness of the fruit. We loved it, and it paired well with some of the food on the table, including my broiled arctic char (which is something pf a cousin to salmon, but less fatty). An amazing contrast to the '05 RRV I had on New Year's Eve.

Explosive nose of dark cherries, clove and a bit of cotton candy. On the palate it comes across confected and one dimensional. This is my second bottle of the 2003 RRV and tonight's experience was consistent with the first. It is an intriguing cocktail wine as the flavors are intense and it has a nice velvety mouthfeel...but ultimately exhausting. In this vintage I think the Sonoma Coast is a vastly superior wine.

Moderate red color with little bricking at the rim. The nose is alcoholic and has a dominant dark cherry note. The palate pumped out confected, dark cherry, root beer, and chocolate, but the alcohol was very apparent throughout. Structurally, this low acid, high alcohol wine has a manufactured feel to it with dominant alcohol. Additonally, a bitter note peeks out early in the finish, but the fruit overcomes the bitterness and provides a long finish. Overall, I may have gotten this at an awkward stage because a couple hours of air seemed to tame the bitterness and bring forth the root beer and chocolate flavors. However, the alcohol does intrude and gives an unbalanced feel to the wine.

This bottle was no where near as good as the one in June. There is some heat poking through on the finish with lots of cherry cola flavors and little if any acidity which is not a profile I prefer. I wonder if this wine is not rapidly declining as a result of the 15.25% apv.

So it ain't burgundy... so what?! With a 45 minute decant it's full-throttle Cali pinot with some complexity, especially some underlying cola and spice. Totally yummy with roast chicken and veggies. Hey, I'm satisfied.... this is good stuff that is loads 'o fun to drink.

The bottle was popped and poured and the wine was drinking very well from the beginning. Cola, dark fruit and baking spices. Served at cellar temperature the alcohol was not evident. As the wine warmed the alcohol began to show. A quick chill brought it back into balance. When I want a big styled pinot, KB is my go to and I have not yet been disappointed.

OC Kosta Browne Pay It Forward Offline (Sage in Newport Beach, CA): As good as I remember all the previous bottles of this I have been graced to enjoy. Dark fruit, brown spice notes, red apple, slight mocha. Just a terrific bottle of wine and one that any pinot drinker needs to try to get a sense of what great RRV pinot is about--balance, aromatics, acidity, transparent alcohol and wood. Thank god I have one left in the cellar.

Popped and poured to accompany grilled Copper River red salmon and celebrate the end of summer. Absolutely delightful. No trace of the 15 1/2% alcohol. Agree with the comments about balance. Cherry fruit, strawberries, and spicy vanilla/oak. Great 'thickness' on the palate balanced by acidity, tannin and heat. Yes, this has high alcohol, but it seemed to serve a useful purpose here.

CA Cherry-Bomb Bash Dinner at ONE.midtown kitchen (Atlanta, GA): Decanted 2 ½ hr’s. Cherry and cinnamon nose with a band of vanilla. Big, dark cherry flavors with pomegranate along with a significant presence of dark asian spices, clove and vanillin oak. Plush, silky smooth tannins with a long, lingering, spice infused finish. Better integrated than a year ago, but still recommend decanting for 2 hr’s plus now and has many years left in the cellar.

Decanted for 45 minutes. Fantastic juice. The only thing keeping me from kicking the score up a couple of points was the noticeable heat. Drank this with non-wino's and they commented on this. That being said, this was so enjoyable. Great nose with wonderful red fruit and spice. The wine seemed to be "multi-layered" with great concentration. The non-wino's kept saying how much they loved the wine (after they commented on the heat). Too bad only one bottle left

Excellent...nicely balanced wine with typical russian river notes...I got a bit more rasberry than some of the previous notes indicate and also some sour cherry. Interesting to compare with a Black Estate pinot from NZ drank at the same time....made me realize that the KB is an elegant and balanced wine (similar to the NZ pinot), but with more flavor and stuffing. Side note: 1yr ago i preferred the KB Russian River to the Sonoma Coast...today after having recently opened a SC...I think the SC is a more interesting wine.

Consumed with Thanksgiving dinner, and my favorite wine of the evening. A nice nose, with definite notes of cherries and spice, which are followed on the palate by soft, silky cherry flavors, cinnamon, nutmeg, and enough acidity to keep the wine from being cloying or overbearing. Over the course of the evening, the wine just seemed to get better and better. I have a strong feeling I'm going to wish I had purchased a lot more of this.

"WOW, tasty" were the first words out of the wife's mouth. Great wine. Loads of cola, spice and red fruit. Everything you would expect from a KB Pinot. The alcohol started off prominent, but dissapated quickly. I'd say in about 1 year this would be at or near its peak.

Austin Wine Tasting (Castle Hill Cafe): Didn't show very well after the Burgundies. I did get all the usual cola, spice, and dark berry fruit. But the alcohol seemed to be more prominent than usual, which I attribute to this wine having followed 2 Burgundies. Still very primary and sweet. I truly think this needs to be left alone for at least another year or two before going back to it. Ron joked that this was a different grape compared to the Burgundies.

From 375. Slightly more brooding than Sonoma Coast. Nose needed some time to blow off, then showed big flavors of black cherry with cinammon and cloves on the finish. If I had any, I'd hold this to 2007 or so.

We had this tonight with grilled veal chops (with a light balsamic reduction and sage)... nice plum and cherry on the nose carries through on the first sip. i was surprised at the sweetness and relative lack of acidity right after we opened the bottle but after about an hour the wine in the glass evolved very nicely... a touch of heat (15.25% alc.) but nice earthy, pepper, plum and cherry notes and a nice finish. Not the structure i would have expected but very good nonetheless.

Dark red color. Nose of Cola, cinnamon, clove, and all-spice as well as red and dark cherry and a whiff of blueberry. Tastes of pretty bing cherry, red currants, and a touch of leather and cedar bark. IMO, more tannic than the 2002 was at the same age, this wine shows exceptionally balanced with good acidity. The finish is long and definitely lasts 30 secs+. It's a Pinot that is true to its varietal and point of origin that can only be described as another master piece by Michael Browne. The RRV seems to have all the ingredients to age well, but can really be enjoyed right now. Simply awesome.

A brilliant dark red wine. This is all Russian River Valley with red and black cherry, asian spice, and a touch of cola coming on the nose. The aroma continues to develop with time in the glass. This medium bodied wine is earthy with red and black fruit and some vanilla nuances. At 15.25%, the fruit is able to carry the alcohol and the bit of heat detected when the cork was pulled is quickly gone. I love this wine and recommend at least 1 - 2 hours decant if you drink it now.

I absolutely loved this wine. It has the typical Russian River profile of dark cherry with wonderful mouthfeel. Even better than the '02 and I loved that version of the wine. Kosta Brown has proven once again that they are making some of the best pinot in California. So glad that I have six more bottles. Great now. No need to wait. Decanting for an hour recommended.

But the alcohol seemed to be more prominent than usual, which I attribute to this wine having followed 2 Burgundies. Still very primary and sweet. I truly think this needs to be left alone for at least another year or two before going back to it. Ron joked that this was a different grape compared to the Burgundies.
