Great Wine Dinner, No Wine Theme (Tzuco - Chicago IL): Popped-and-poured, bottle with a great fill and great color. Fully mature yet with enough fruit and lots of cigarbox. No longer that powerful, but lots here. Thanks for the birthday treat, Mark.

Why 62 is less than 61 (Wine Watch, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): Ex Mähler-Besse. Now this is quite good and shows what a fully resolved Léoville Las Cases can taste like. Genuine purity of ripe and low octane Cabernet Sauvignon; mulberry, cassis, tender tannins, decent finish. Enjoyable and not fading, at least from well kept bottles.

When I pulled the cork at 5:30 the wine smelled truly awful, like bleach and windex, maybe some mold too. I left it sitting open for a half hour and it still smelled awful. So I decanted it before giving up on it, and I'm glad I did, because within 10 minutes it cleaned up completely, showed the stately and graceful old claret smells of tobacco and soil. Gained complexity over the next two hours showing dried rose petals and even some old stewed berry fruit. The palate took longer to fill out and at first the acidity was a bit high. The palate never hit the heights of the nose but it was balanced and still vigorous and expressive, although without the density or pungency of flavor that separates a great old Bdx from a good one. There's nothing further to wait for, in my opinion. Enjoy them if you have them.

similar to my 2019 note - brick with orange rim - restrained nose of mature cassis and some old leather - medium body with mostly resolved tannins - very pretty mature red fruit in the mouth with good acid-fruit balance - medium 15-20 sec finish - undoubtedly on the down slope, but still a beautifully mature 50+ year old with all the characteristics one looks for in a mature St. Julien

Bottle with mid-shoulder fill; thoroughly soaked but still intact cork which could be extracted without problems ... Fully mature color: mahogany with brown rim, medium intensity. The wine has gone into the tertiary stage of its life: Aromas of black tea, damp forest floor, overripe brambles, some dusty tannins, touch of lovage. on the palate suave and soft, but still alive and kicking; good middle palate and the wine still shows a peak and quite a long after taste. A special experience.

Demure isn't a word I ever expected to use for a Leoville las Cases (regardless of age), but it just might apply here. Ethereal raspberry, cedar, and mineral nose; lacking a bit in impact, even allowing for the expectation that a 62 would naturally favor elegance over brawn. Supple palate with a shortish finish. A reminder not to leave vintages like 1999 too long unattended in the cellar. From a very high shoulder chateau-bottled / Mahler-Besse slip.

Decanted off the sediment at 5:45, back into the bottle. Served at perhaps 9:30. the wine showed very well, as it has in the past. Classic and lovely aromatics of fruit, tobacco-y green, and soil. the wine is balanced and shows good acidity and drive - it doesn't come off as anywhere near as old as it is.
Having had it before I can say that I think this wine shows better when less time elapses between decanting and drinking. There is a vividness and pungency to the aromas and to the mouthfeel that faded by the time we got to this. And still, it's a wonderful old claret.

brick with orange rim - restrained nose of mature cassis and some old leather (did not get the burnt nose of some of the previous notes) - medium body with tannins predominating the limited but very pretty fruit - very nicely balanced - short finish - undoubtedly on the down slope now, but still a beautifully mature 50+ year old with all the characteristics one looks for in an old St. Julien

A bit tough to assess this properly as it was quite cloudy; I suspect the fine sediment had been agitated a bit too much. Despite that, the wine initially showed some promising LLC swagger; a rich, cassis nose with leather, walnut, and iodine. But this broke up quite quickly. I wouldn't mind trying this again because the attack was really nice.

Nose has a tiny hint of a burnt note. Michel agrees there is a hint of heat damage. Palate gains in richness with air, but sides are really dry. I dump this. Racines.

A bit more earthy but less complex than the 61 tasted next to it, candied fruit, cedary and smoky but more fruity with orange zest notes and more "modern" if that word can be used than the 61. Great match with a steak tartare.

still young looking for it's age; brick edge. Nose of leather, tar, violets, red and blackcurrant fruit. To taste, great black fruit, tannins still there, long savoury, meaty finish. 5* amazing.

From the magnum bottle. Medium ruby-garnet. The nose invites with the fragrance of licorice, peach, wet earth and lovage. Soft, resolved tannins and medium, tobacco-infused body. Very mature, but still quite enjoyable.

Bordeaux WIMPS (The Ledbury, London): Slightly cloudy orange with a slight oxidative note. Very minty, like a middling vintage of Heitz Martha's. Fruit receding but still ample. Soft. A bit short at the finish. Others said this was corked, but I didn't pick it up.

Great nose. Totally astringent. Got only marginally better with time. I’ve had much better bottles
