Coravin fun - 2009 Bordeaux & Random Burgundies (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Red hued fruit; almost a little baked raspberry married to black hued fruits; plums; currants, cream, slightly jubey compote notes, sweet spice. Juicy, fleshy and still retains freshness, black and red fruits, coarse flour textured tannins are slightly drying but more in support. Nice.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas initially but, with agitation, starts to show jubey blackcurrant and brambles, sweet spice, cedar and a little mint. Nice nose. The acid is a little sharp on the palate which pushes the fruit more red spectrum, soft tannins, slight alcohol warmth carries the finish, medium plus length. Disappointing palate.

Decanted for two hours before serving. Threw just a small amount of very fine sediment. Deep dark ruby, nose of ripe black fruits, tobacco, graphite and peppers. Palate similar with the dark fruits and peppers front and center. Earthy, ripe, medium bodied with lots of spices and any number of dark, black fruits and berries. Tasted a bit when first opened and the decanter time helped tame the spices a bit, but a couple of more hours in the decanter might have helped even more. Seems like this wine has plenty of time left and may yet still improve. Nice qpr for a Margaux.

1 year anniversary since last tasting. Slight bricking, garnet and clear plum color, clear legs. Berry and tobacco nose. Med weight in mouth, fuzzy pleasing tannins. Raspberry, cherry, plums, green pepper. Acid upon opening fades after 30 min, hint of tomato noticeable, finishes dry, with vegetal, leafy tobacco and earthy notes mingling with fruit. Decent, low priced Cru Bourgeois. Near or at peak.

After 3 hours in the decanter, lots of violets, black fruits, and some cedar. Also, some dill and bell pepper aromas. Good initial attack and mid-palate, but a shortish finish. Medium acidity and medium, round tannins. This is one of those "tweeners," not quite 90, but a solid 89.

A pleasant enough wine showing dark berries and a touch of oxidation on the mid palate. In my mind, maybe should have been drank a few years ago for optimal flavours. Slightly drying tannins but not prevalent. Short to medium length finish. Medium bodied. Nothing flashy, but a decent enough wine overall.

Slow ox for an hour before serving. Very dark in the glass with dark fruits and a floral element on the nose. On the palate, still a lot of structure, medium to full bodied, with notes of plums, cassis, cedar, tobacco and truffle. Very ripe fruit, but not cloying in the least. Lots of spice and forest floor, decaying leaves, etc. Really showing well with food. First bottle from case bought on release, I think this has plenty of time to continue to develop despite the ct drinking window estimate of 2020. Nice value to get anything from Margaux for under $20 release price.

Popped and poured. Drinking splendidly now, with a tinge of maturity to the flavors and texture. Very 2009. This is a broad-scaled wine with moderate depth of flavor, rich and expansive but not heavy. Open for business and it does seem the merlot component dominates. Some nutty flavors towards the end of the bottle. Good acidity, great with food. Not the smoothest tannins but not entirely rustic either. This has plenty of further development left ahead, another decade at least. Very enjoyable.

From Coravin. Smoked bacon, jubey and spicy plum fruit, a little wild blackcurrant and black cherry, fruit grows on the nose with time in the glass and becomes more lozenged. Juicy, jubey wild black fruits, a touch of raisin for me as well as sweet spice. Tannins are talc textured and grippy but work with the fruit and spice on the long finish - that length assisted by some alcohol warmth. Mmm.

From a 375ml bottle. Have been trying this for over 5 years now and it continues to improve and not sure when it will reach its peak. Elegant and balanced. Notes of dark cherry with strawberry and some graphite. 2009 is one of my favorite Bordeaux vintage and this clearly does not disappoint. This may not be a first growth but its clearly a lovely wine. 13.5% alcohol. Paid $18.

The nose is unclean. The aromas have a light intensity with notes of TCA (subtle damp cardboard). The wine is faulty.
On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium alcohol, and medium(+) body. The high level tannins are ripe and chalky in nature. The flavours have a medium(-) intensity and show notes of TCA (damp cardboard) and black fruit (very subtle blackberry).
This wine is faulty. The taint was too dominant for me, hiding the primary fruit.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux + ring in (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe plums, blackcurrant, cream, slight milk chocolate, a little sweet spice, tiny herbaceous note. Quite generous with plummy fruit, quite silky tannins and a little blackcurrant fruit that herbaceous note is more noticeable in the mouth. Hmm.

My 8th 375ml bottle. Starts out a bit tart but opens up beautifully. Elegant balance of fruit, tannins and acidity with a lovely finish. 46% Merlot, 54% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.5% alcohol. Paid $20 for 375ml

Coravin fun - Cornas and Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe plum, black cherry, polished oak, sweet spice and slight balsamic. On the palate it's juicy, with ripe though not overripe black fruits, tannins are integrated and this is in better balance than I remember it being last time. For me it's entering it's window; it is still very primary.

92 nose, 88 fruit/mid palate, 86 finish. Will be a little better in 2-3 years as acid on that finish fades a bit more, but not sure it has the fruit to improve beyond that.

Double decant then left for 90 minutes. Consumed with a simple lamb shank stew...Aromas of cream, plums, black cherries over touches of butter, slight mint, balsamic and soy. It's refreshingly juicy on the palate but still has tight tannins. Time required for the other bottles but this is pretty handy.
simple and fruit forward. if you bought this at Trader Joe's instead of Bogle, you would be happy. Still, an enjoyable wine if you recognize it for what it is...and isn't.

On first opening strong alcohol on the nose with some leather and subtle fruit notes. Tasted of leather and tobacco with some tart fruit on the finish. After 6 hour decant aromas of strawberry, cherry, and white pepper. Tastes of strawberry fruit leather, dark cherry, and graphite. The alcohol had subsided, but the tannins were now a bit over powering and the mid palate was a bit thin. By day two, the wine has become very balanced with soft tannins but tastes flat.

Unexpressive nose, particularly by 2009 vintage standards. Whether intentional or not I cannot say, but this wine is made in a New World style. It shows a lot of fruit by Bordeaux standards, good acid, but not much grip and even less terroir. Many a Cru Bourgeois from the Haut-Medoc or environs show better than this wine. Enjoyable for what it is, but for 2009 Margaux, it is fairly disappointing.

Some bottle variation, but this wine always starts off a tad unassuming, and really opens up/fills in with a some air. Has a cool finesse lift to it. Probably better in 1-3 years. Either way you cut it, great value. Picked this Cru Bourgeois Marguax up for about $19.

46% Merlot, 54% Cabernet Sauvignon. Better than I was expecting. Tannins are definitely present but get the sense with aeration the best is yet to come. Haven't tried the 2010 yet which has a better rating, although I am not convinced in five years which will be better, the '09 or '10. Elevated the rating slightly to 90 because effect of the aeration and expectation of a better future.

Triple decanted. Really opened it up and drank leisurely over a couple hours. Agree with previous reviews that it needs time but certainly no complaints now either. Like that it toys with fruit forward new world but dances with old world charm. Double yum and a half and with time we could be looking at a triple yum And for price wow! Have had Margaux double the price or triple the price that tasted similar. Solid

More lean and herbal than previous bottle, with a noticeable lack of the fresh fruit found upon release. Still not closed, but not sure where this is going at the moment. These uber ripe vintages don't always follow the same path of evolution as more classic styled vintages.

Still young and fresh in the aromatics. Very ripe, but with better balance and acidity than 2005. Smooth tannins make this a pleasant food wine, even at this young stage.

Had a bottle with no decanting. After it opened up it was delightful. Crimson color with a nice, though subdued nose of black fruit and earth. Medium body, softer tannins and can use another year or 2 or some decanting. Shorter finish keeps this from being a really good effort. Had with grilled steak and it worked nicely.

I know I should have waited, but couldn't resist trying it for myself...
Decanted it for over 2 hours and let it sit back in the bottle overnight.
The wine offers a nice combination of new world fruit 'forwardness' (without being overdone) with old world characteristics...needs a bit of cellar time to integrate seamlessly...I am glad I have 5 more in the cellar...Will hold off from opening the next one until 2015.

This merlot/cab blend is an above average production the great 2009 from Bordeaux. Dark purple, earthy (some poop), very smooth, and medium to full body, although more full than medium. Cherries, blackberries and vanilla. Although I just opened this about half an hour ago it is very drinkable. I expect this to open nicely and grow to a great wine over the next years. I am going in for a case tomorrow.

Paid $18.

Haut-Medoc lunch (Bel & Brio, Barangaroo, Sydney): The appearance is clear and deep ruby in colour. Tears are visible.

My 8th 375ml bottle. At 9 years old and being in a 375ml bottle, this bottle has continued develope in maturity ahead of other larger(750ml) bottles. 2009 is one of my favorite bordeaux vintages, being a most traditional French style.

I still think this has time to improve, I hope it does. Great nose. In the mouth plum, a bit of char, good length. Slightly bitter at the end, I think this will mellow out with a few more years.

Going on to keep it interesting...not a blockbuster by any means but for a good inexpensive Bordeaux what's not to like?

Cherries, blackberries and vanilla. Although I just opened this about half an hour ago it is very drinkable. I expect this to open nicely and grow to a great wine over the next years.
