Opened and decanted 30-min ahead of seared sesame beef and noodles. Dark purple-crimson color. Perfumed nose brings cherry blossoms, hot blueberry pie, chocolate cherries, grape menthol, and whiffs of spearmint and pipe tobacco. The palate is medium-full, round, and textured, bringing a rich core of blackberries, plums, and blackcurrant mixed with chocolate cherries and raspberries that flows into a savory finish of wild herbs, coffee, and dark chocolate. The finish is sweet and the tannins polished. Drink 2024-2028. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 92.

Really hitting its straps now. Glorious cassis core rapped with cocoa and smoke. The fruit is thick and it finishes dry, structured, but with melting tannins. Very enjoyable.

Sixth bottle from a full case purchased en primeur. Pristine condition, perfect level and cork. Opened two hours in advance. En pleine forme. Open and aromatic nose, peppery and spicy, red berries and cherries, hints of cream and beef stew; fresh and minerally, energetic palate, on the slender side, precise and transparent, crisp and with grippy tannins; relatively dry finish, hint of bell pepper, appetising but not expansive. Completely ready, drink now - 2030.

Exuberant, sweet and ripe, the red fruits were intermingled with a sprinkling of black, enhanced by lively tannins and a sprinkling of spice. On the mid-palate it developed cream and added richness stayed in the mouth long after the final swallow. Absolutely delicious. CHP 93pts

In memoriam Bordeaux tasting for Piet Kuiper (@ RvD): Beautiful bouquet with beautiful oak, menthol and dark berries. On the palate ripe dark berry fruits, chocolate, full bodied and ripe, beautiful acidity and subtle use of oak. Fresh acidity and soft tannin wilt a mild bite. Lush wine.

The first positive about this wine is that the nose could only be left bank Bordeaux and you could pick it out 100/100 times if tasted blind. The wine leans toward classic and is not thick by any stretch, but that is great if you're enjoying with food. This was decanted for 3+ hours and only then started to open up so avoid taking this to a restaurant. Great acidity, nice fruit, a bit lean (by modern vintage standards), and decently long finish. This could get quite interesting in 5-10 years but really solid an enjoyable now with air. No rush on this classical wine.

Intriguing nose of smoked cedar and rosemary herbs, very savoury. Still has good structure and will continue to age well for 5-10 years. Dark red fruits underpinning this one with a long finish.

Kept in a wine-cooler with 13 degrees Celsius since september 2012. Color: dark purple with a ruby hint. Taste: rather full, especially red fruit with hints of cedar, laurel and rosemary. Taste: followed the nose, rather full and rich, and with depth; matching the characteristics of Medoc 2009. More developed than in 2020, but the tannins still were not fully resolved. Besides that: a rather rich and lush wine with grandeur. I will keep my last bottle for at least two or three, maybe more years. For now 92, potentially 93+.

A well-crafted blend, good processes and a great vintage combine to give us an excellent wine. Everything you might want in a classic Margaux; a strong presence toned down by a subtle balance make a bottle that is a pleasure to drink (and share!) without guilt :) Perfect now..

Very approachable , in fact I would say fully mature . Shockingly, this seems to be hitting its apex. I definitely like it and enjoy its soft subtle nuances , I would not look to hold this more than a handful of years. Drink now.

Elegant and fruity in the nose, berries, cherries, mints, plums, coffee beans, eucalyptus, and pencil shavings; creamy and fruity on the palate, berries, cherries, dark chocolate, cloves, light wood spices, unresolved tannins, and whipped cream; long finish; overall, 92-93 points at this stage; still a few more years to evolve further before maturity.

Another beautiful wine from our steak and lobster dinner. Wine 5 of 5. Like the Carruades de Lafite and Tig that came before it, also decanted, paired with steak, in it's drinking window, and with lovely smooth tannins. For me it was just a little below the level of the aforementioned, but the competition was stiff. It's not fading at all and has a least a few more years in it's drinking window.

another excellent 2009 - mature with a lovely depth of flavour, perhaps with a little too much oak but delicious nonetheless - good for quite a few years yet

Deeply coloured with youthful crimson rim. Medium intense nose of cool dark berries, cigar box and a touch of eucalyptus; not many tertiary notes. In the mouth medium bodied, velvety tannins, ripe fruit, but nice freshness. The length is disappointing though, because there is sth missing; pencil shavings linger on, but all the rest disappears quickly. Overall I’d say this drinks very well, maybe a bit too easily without leaving a lasting impression. Give it a couple more years?

Solid and a great pairing for pot roast on a wet, cold late winter night. Plenty of soft tannin and crisp berry. Medium finish and lacking power. A finesse wine I suppose. I do like the wine and producer, the $50 I paid seems ok.. would not pay more for what it offers.
Drink now to 2025.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby colour, with fading rim and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of blackberry, bilberry and dark plum, oak notes of toast, kernel notes of coffee, mineral notes of earth, pungent spice of black pepper, maturity notes of graphite. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, medium (+) tannin of ripe and velvety texture, medium alcohol and medium (+) body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of black fruit of blackberry and dark plum, kernel notes of chocolate, mineral notes of earth, sweet spice of clove. The wine has a medium finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Margaux with an intense nose showing very good complexity, with plenty of black fruit, toast, coffee, supplemented with peppery spice and earth, plus some evolving minerality and graphite. The palate is well-structured, balanced with good tannin and robust, showing good concentration of flavours. The length is a bit shorter than I would hope though. It is ready to drink now and can further develop for another 3-5 years.

This property managed to make a classic Bordeaux in a vintage where so many others produced bigger, fruitier wines. This had a wonderful nose of fresh red cherry and damp forest underbrush, on the palate it was a little plummier with baking spice and mint on the finish.

Popped and poured this, my last of five bottles. I've had fantastic bottles, and bottles that were merely good. Unfortunately, this falls in the latter category. Very dark garnet, and coats the glass. Somewhat simple bouquet of roasted coffee, butternut and earth. Somewhat dirty, bitter, black fruit flavors. I was hoping for so much more, as this is the worst of the five bottles I purchased. Only in the finish does this even hint at the complexity of my best experiences with this wine. A shame. 5-11-10-2: 78/100.
Update: This was so bad yesterday I could only choke down one glass. Good news is that there was a lot left over for today, when this wine tasted much, much better, losing the awful palate flaw of last night as if it had never been. Now showing some pretty anise: 5-12-16-8: 91/100.

Dark garnet. Cassis and plum nose. Palate follows nose and adds a cedar note. Fine tannins, medium bodied and good length. Somewhat sweet, but this is balanced by the savoury profile here.
Very nice value and drinking very well now. Look forward to enjoying my others over the next decade or so.

Was again really great today, didn't even need a decant. Still has this specific du tertre smell, is more fruitful when drinking than when smelling. Really nice acidity, long taste.

From a full case purchased en primeur. Not decanted, opened two hours in advance. Rich colour, just starting to brown slightly at the edges; convincing nose, ripe blue and black berry fruit and black pepper, just a hint of toast from the oak, gravel and "animale", good depth; relatively sweet on the palate, juicy and rounded but fresh and energetic, ripe fruit and warm spices, fresh and well balanced, with a delightful counterpoint of firm but elegant and ripe tannins; very good resonance and length. A complete Du Tertre, sunny but not warm or overripe, on its plateau of maturity. Not hugely complex but not overambitious either. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Lovely. Drink now - 2029. Completely upright on the second day, confirming its ageing potential.

I am back again, boring everyone: es tut mir Leid.
And on my favourite subject: the merits and demerits of left-bank 2009 Bordeaux.
Perhaps I am drinking these wines too early. Perhaps they will develop character in time, but at the moment they are too accessible, lacking in depth and complexity, with good forward fruit and soft tannin, but little else. And, quite frankly, I can't see where that "little else" is going to come from.
2009 seems to represent a new style of wine-making in Bordeaux, one that reaches out, I suspect, to North America, but in doing so loses something in the process. But now I have said this, I am enjoying drinking this wine.
I can't get my over-rationated Cambridge brain out of wine assessment.
Or anything else, for that matter.

Impenetrable but healthy (bright) dark plum colour; on the nose, reasonable lift of cassis, dark fruit, sweet earth; good and satisfying weight in the mouth, with slightly drying textures perhaps, but nonetheless with staying power.
This is a fine balanced wine, a good example of a Margaux on the Moulis side (in other words, not an ethereal wine). It is not exciting, but if you like classic Claret (that combination of wood and smoky fruit), it is very appealing.
Probably somewhere between 91-92.

Beautiful wine. Excellent balance of juicy dark fruit with pleasant acidity and fine tannins, this was singing after a two hour decant. It will be interesting to see where this goes from here, but if you have one on hand don’t be afraid to open and enjoy now. Great bottle.

Drinking beautifully but plenty of live ahead of it. Plush, silky fruit, ground pepper and spice, supple tannins (this is after about 3 hours decanting). Really charming. Still on the fruity side - can even accompany food with a degree of spice (had it with Chinese braised lamb scorpion).

A: mauve. medium plus density. slightly cloudy rim
N: medium intensity, "velvety" if that is possible, soft iron filings,
P: extremely soft, plush entry, firmer tannins at the end. Simply lovely developed fruit. No fireworks. Warming finish. Feels alcoholic but the label says 13%
=: lovely

Needs a lot of air, the wine slowly turns up: unripe blackberries, red cherries, cigar box, cherry yoghurt and a very fine hint of red pepper. Elegant and fresh in the mouth, the acidity is juicy, the tannins are of good quality and slightly tart, elegant structure and with a medium body. Red and black berries, spices and slightly green notes, long and fresh finish.
Well done and elegant for the warm year. It's already nice to drink, but it still has potential.

Kept under condition 1 since september 2012 (see my profile). Color: dark (ruby-)purple. Only directly after pouring into the glass really a (promising) nose: underbrush, coffee, and a note like iodine. Taste: quite subdued, also after one hour in the glass not really open: quite fresh fruit, coffee, underbrush, minerals with an OK acidity. Although with just 13% alcohol a bit burning. Some drying tannins in the quite short finish. At the third day quite a lot of underbrush in the taste for a Medoc, with floral notes besides an adequate amount of fruit; nicely soft. But on its own still rather a lot of unresolved tannins. Kept the way I have done, this wine needs two more years of cellaring, but there were signs of very good quality. 91+.

Gorgeous, unctuous wine, drinking beautifully at the moment. Lovely Margaux nose. Perfumed. Soft, rich and gentle in the mouth but with plenty of stuffing, this wine hits the sweet spot, and for relatively little cash. Wish I had more. Throwing a good bit of sediment. 4-13-18-9: 94/100.

Tasted next to a barrel sample of 2018. On the nose a bit of eucalyptus, tobacco, floral notes, dark berry fruit, spices. Quite accessible and open. Relatively rich style for Du Tertre, in sync with the vintage. Stylish and elegant but with more gravitas and depth than usual, and not as marked by the Cabernet Franc as in cooler vintages. Perfect weight, displays real harmony and finesse, but (unusually for Du Tertre) a bit brooding at present. I have no doubt that it will be more expressive and forthcoming in 2-3 years time, and its future looks bright (93 potential) - until 2035 or so.

Not a powerful wine, rather finesse in a bottle. A real smooth and open bottle with a cool finish. Will it cellar long term? I will drink mine by 2025... those seeking a fine bottle for their supper will be hard pressed to stay away from any remaining bottles after popping their first.

Deep ruby. A developing and quite old-school nose is marked by brettanomyces-influenced notes of leather and animal, which - from my perspective - provide a nice, if rustic, compliment to the dried black fruits, grilled herb and wet soil notes. Medium+ bodied on the palate where almost out of nowhere the generosity and warmth of the vintage arrives offering a sexy, round texture, polished, fine tannins and mouthfilling flavors of ripe black fruits, soil and leather. If your crowd is okay with brett, this is sure to be a pleaser.

A solid and steady wine from a vintage I am growing fond of. Give this 90 minutes in the decanter and enjoy over an evening. Well balanced, tasty suave fruit and a finish that lacks tartness or hard edges. Will cellar another decade and show another point or 2 of score improvement.

Mini Horizontal of 2009 Left Bank: Funny, by itself I think this is really an excellent wine. In the company of Dom Chevallier and Battailley it becames still an enjoyable wine, but I notice the slight imbalance towards acidity on the palate on towards alcohol on the nose. Still good, but the others are better.

This is an outstanding bottle, and for me a quintessential Margaux. Still more purple than ruby with excellent legs. The nose on this is perfumed, exotic, and sexy. Beautifully rendered fruit in the mouth, absolutely exciting, rich, and flavory. Feminine, voluptuous and alluring. This is drinking right in the middle of its peak, with no signs of decline but no reason to delay the immense pleasure it now provides. Certainly the best wine from this estate that I can ever recall having. Outstanding. 5-13-18-9: 95/100.
Thoroughly unpleasant upon opening; decanted for 24 hours in the refrigerator in a decanter designed to maximize air exposure. This helped it to improve, but it was still way too young. This has all the necessities to age, but it is 4-5 years away from its drinking window.

Decanted 1.5 hours. Dark garnet. Cassis, plum and cedar bouquet. Brisk attack, medium bodied mid-palate follows bouquet and amplifies the cedar/tobacco notes. Some spice here, and overall mouthfeel is bright and tingly.
Nicely balanced and looks quite promising. This was my first of 12 and look forward to my others.

Lush, supple, elegant and fresh, the wine tastes, smells and feels great, with all its sweet, lush, fresh fruit and plummy, chocolate touches. Half bottle. Among the densest classed growths from the vintage that I recall tasting. In a word, unique, particularly for Margaux. The wine delivered muddled purple and black berries, muddled thick petal flowers, peppers, graphite, and a creaminess that bordered on muddiness (in a good way). It featured great balance of fruit, earth, acid, and (powdery) tannin, a substantive mouthfeel, and a stalwart, somewhat gritty, finish of very good length. An atypical 2009 classed growth Bordeaux because of its thickness, (which speaks to phenolic ripeness, a rarity with this overhyped vintage). In my experience, most 2009 classed growth Bordeaux feature high-toned red berry sleekness, with lingering bitter notes. Also, if tasting blind, knowing only that it was classed growth from one of the four great Medoc communes, it smelled and drank more like Saint-Estèphe than Margaux. This aside, if double-blind, I would have guessed Listrac-Médoc or Moulis-en-Médoc.
Overall, a rock solid Fifth Growth, atypical of the vintage, though not a bell ringer. Showing well now, and it will hold for a long while, but unlikely to improve by an appreciable margin.

One hour decant. Nose of sage, liquorice, horse hide, clove, sawdust, mocha and espresso. Flavours of earth, pencil lead, mercury, tar, cocoa, cherry, blackberry, spice cake and tobacco leaf. PnP, let it rest in glass for 45 minutes. Seductive nose of dark fruit and caramel (unusual!). Very fruit-forward, almost boisterous on the palate. Would not have pinned this for a Margaux if blind; very modern style and I like it! I imagine it will drink well for several years, but I do wonder how this kind of Bordeaux will age for the longer term.

From 375 popped and poured, first of a case. Still evolving but surprisingly enjoyable o drink already. Black and some red fruit on the nose. Plums, and a floral component. Same on the palate. Nice mouthfeel. A very clean, if not especially long finish. Better than the 2000 and 2005 vintages of this wine, and those were both very good.
Good to drink now, with exciting future.

PnP. Nose shows spicy and grassy Cabernet Franc tones (approx. 20% cab.fr used in this), red currant, leather spices and some nice dusty cherries. When the wine warms up, there is some alcohol showing. Palate shows rather sweet and ripe rich fruit, black cherries, plums, hints of oak. Creamy and plush, and becoming more jammy as it warms up. Somewhat lacking in acidity. Still, a nice & charming wine, ready to drink, if not from my favorite vintage. I know that this Chateau are capable of making more complex wines, in good, cooler vintages. (89 – 90)

At just over six years of age, this Du Tertre is absolutely delicious. Rich and creamy, ripe and rounded, but with the required freshness and velvety phenolic grip for balance, fleshy fruit, spicy oak, gravelly elegance, generous and peppery, confident and long. A marvellous Du Tertre - it may well add another point as it develops its complexity. It certainly has the balance, power and energy for a distinguished career of some two decades. Drink now - 2030+.

Pop & pour. This is ready straight out of the bottle. I don't see any reason to wait. Although a ripe vintage this still shows some Cabernet typicity, mainly a moderate amount of herbs & cedar and bell pepper without alienating those who enjoy the plush California ripeness. A 2009 that appeals to both sides of the spectrum. Well done.

Soft and supple black cherry with floral overtones and notes of licorice, tar, and incense. I think the wine is drinking well now and would not expect it to improve much if at all. I do not think that it is tight; I don't discern any unexpressed weight. The tannins are hardly noticeable and there is relatively low acidity. 90.
Two days later (half-empty bottle vacu-vin'ed). The tar is even more pronounced. I now notice menthol/eucalyptus notes and a black-tea finish with soft tannins. I really like this wine. 91.

Du Tertre. Commanderie de Bordeaux tasting/dinner. Dark garnet. Nose of brett, barnyard with red fruit and oak. On the palate round and fat but lacking a bit of structure and definition. This needs to come together, so better wait. 89-90.
Not adding any more to my collection. Rustic and not too evolved with drying tannins, much better on the nose than on the palate, underwhelming performance given the vintage.

A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, a very reasonable 13% ABV. Rich colour, relatively deep; impressive nose, deep and harmonious, rich red and black fruit, minerals and perfectly judged oak, hint of pepper; sweet attack, silky and seductive texture, medium weight, ripe acidity, excellent balance, mineral energy and drive; very good length. Extremely attractive, would need a little more complexity for a higher score.

Beautiful nose of black currants, cassis, leather, sweet tobacco, cigar box and flowers. Dark crimson black at the core, opulent on the palate, that extraordinary vintage which to me compares to the 82. Decent body, structure, coats mid palate with black fruits and cassis, solid but integrated tannins, good minerality and balance. Very good Margaux.

Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: During a 2009 quick check. This wine did better during the arrivage tastings. At the modment the nose is quite discrete and the aromatics (red fruit, toast, spices) have moved into the background but it looks like all is there. Acidity is quit high though. I think it will sort itself out and perform again as it did fresh in the bottle.

Bit disappointing for a 2009. Quite good fruit, tannins are already soft to velvety, but wine is lacking every bit of attack to the point of being straight flat on the palate. Easy to drink but struggle to see it regaining its edge over time. Maybe function of drinking from half bottle, but coming from a good retailer not sure that is a likely reason. 5 more bottles to go, to be revisited.

From a half-bottle. I poured the wine into a decanter and finished the half-bottle in 2 1/2 hours. The wine kept improving with air. It offered a slightly dusty and slightly stinky nose, with cherry, currant, blackberry, blueberry, cola, some vanilla, cigar box, and hints of dark chocolate and liquorice. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed nice mixed red and dark fruit flavours, blueberry, blackberry, some plum, cherry, red currant, some black currant, rose water, some spices, vanilla, a hint of liquorice and cedar wood, paired with good acidity, ultra-ripe tannins and exceptional length. The elegant wine was very balanced and delivered a sense of well-restrained power. An impressive effort for Château du Tertre. Very intriguing; I ordered a case immediately after finishing the bottle. 91 points for the time being, with potential to further improve.

For me the winner of my 2009 tasting; even better than the Poujeaux, more margaux than Giscours and maybe beaten in future by the Domaine de Chevalier but now: everything in superb balance, from the nose with the 'margaux' violins, to the elegant midtaste with fresh fruit and the aftertaste with cocoa and perfectly ripe tannins. This wine is a beauty, even more, a princess.

Truffle, stone, espresso, blackberry, chocolate and menthol in the nose. Sweet, supple and filled with plush ripe, blackberry and plums, this is showing better than when it was tasted earlier this year with the UGC.

This is another 2009 Bordeaux that has fleshed out and improved since it was first tasted back in April, 2010. Licorice, coffee blackberry and plum aromas lead to a fresh, ripe, sensuous, well priced Margaux wine that was produced from a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.

Toasty, spicy, toffee notes on the nose with good fruit underneath; good richness and concentration here. Smooth silky tannins. Elegant - this has quite a long, strong finish but I do detect some bitterness. 89-91

This has developed well since it was tasted in barrel. Truffle, licorice, cassis, black plum and spicy scents lead to an elegant, soft textured Margaux that ends with sweet plums and black cherries.

You can drink this now, but it's going to better in 3-5 years. The wine was produced from blending 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.

Ever evolving in the glass. Held up well to a wide variety of foods. Great now while showing hints of further complexity. Drink now and over the next two decades.

91 points for the time being, with potential to further improve.

maybe beaten in future by the Domaine de Chevalier but now: everything in superb balance, from the nose with
the 'margaux' violins, to the elegant midtaste with fresh fruit and the aftertaste with cocoa and perfectly ripe tannins.
This wine is a beauty, even more, a princess.
