Powerful nose with toasted aromas. I find it a little Coche side. Voluminous palate on an imposing substance. The juice is mineral on wet stones with a little fat and great tension. With time, very marked saline aromas will come. The wine has a huge presence in the mouth, complex and deep, it loosens completely. The finish tightens up a bit, with that salty side that will not leave the wine to finish on a length that I would have liked more in line with the mouth which was magnificent.
It's great though, just that the lack of length prevents him from leveling up.

Served blind. White wine of the day, absolutely gobsmacking. At first I thought there was a hint of TCA, but fortunately I was mistaken and the initial funk blew off. From there it was magical. So dense, palate staining, like licking a rock. This is so intense, so delicious, it's better than any '01 Ramonet Montrachet I've tasted in years (we've had some flawed or tired examples).

Burnished gold colour. Nose is fresh banana, light joss stick smoke. Crushed oyster shells. Ozone.....really intriguing and complex. Mesmerising. Palate is higher-toned, honeyed, perfect round pebbles, honeysuckle, wonderful smoky Eastern incense on the back end. Segues into mesmerising multi-dimensional resonance inside the head and an endless reverberance and length. Perfectly rounded.... wow, the resonance inside the head is now massive and so captivating..... 96 easy. This is a delicate yet so powerful Batard Montrachet.... possibly the best I have ever drank. Close to perfection.... totally silence-creating. Last glass was the best....97.

Light gold in the glass. Great nose of salinity and brine with soft citrus and flowers behind it. Tremendous minerals on the palate, nice chalk and white clay. Very clean and precise, even more so than the '01 Lefliave Chevallier enjoyed alongside, with just a hint of chlorine. White flowers. Super fresh. Some nut oils, macrona almonds with lavender. A beautiful piece of work.

2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Superb. I actually did not take to it when first poured – I thought the more ready 2001 Leflaive Batard we had alongside was far better. Over the night though, this just grew and grew as it sat in the decanter, and I found myself being bowled over each time I took a break from the reds to return to it. By the end of the evening, this was absolutely superb – one of my wines of the night in the midst of what was supposed to be a red wine dinner. Even from first pour, it had a big, gorgeous Batard bouquet, with rich, slightly honeyed tones of yellow fruit and cream alongside chalky mineral and a touch of talcum powder. An alluring nose. The palate suffused the mouth with a warm, rich glow of honey and butterscotch and yellow-fruited flavours, all wrapped in a creamily textured depth. I found it a bit too big and a little unwieldy for my taste at first, but it seemed to come together quite miraculously with time. By the end of the night, this was a display of effortless power and balance, with fresh acidity giving the wine an energy and buoyancy that belied its strength and depth. Notes of white chocolate and little sprinkles of cumin and ginger then emerged past the midpalate, adding nuance and complexity. Fantastic. There was a little heat right at the end at first, but this too faded with time to reveal a long, long finish full of mineral and little nutty notes. Brilliant stuff, starting to show well now. This has a long life ahead of it though – I would leave it aside for a few more years yet, but if serving now, do remember to give it some time in the decanter.

'Farewell Jason' Long Lunch (Hong Kong Wine Vaults, Aberdeen, Hong Kong): Rich yellow gold. Nose is silence-creating and totally mesmerizing: temple smoke and expensive ginger biscuits from Fortnum and Mason, fumey. Palate is wonderfully integrated and complex multi-layered myriad of minerals and lemons. The lemons have incredible depth and complexity. Quietly very very assertively resonant. Huge length. Subtle. 95+.

Thursday Night Dinner (RPM Italian - Chicago, IL): A serious bottle of chardonnay, albeit young. The nose was quiet (in a good way) - hints of flint, lemon, and pear emerged and built over time. I should have decanted this 4-5 hours before dinner...

sweet, buttery, toasty corn and straw on the nose. Very lovely and got better as it opened up further. Reasonably ripe on the palate but not overly so. Slightly bitter finish. Did not go well at all with jamón ibérico, as metallic and mineral flavors became very pronounced.

A stunningly good wine. Medium yellow color. An awesome and somewhat unexpected nose that hits first with an herbal edge, with loads of lightly lemony apple fruit and enormous spice and mineral notes. In the mouth, a sumptuous mouth feel, seamless balance, and impeccable concentration. This has tremendous fruit, but there is so much complexity at work, the wine takes on a different dimension with every sip. The interplay of spice, earth, and minerality with the fruit makes this a wine of numerous dimensions, and the power of it just makes it all the better. Awesome stuff. A

A night of White Burgundy and Champagne at Helsinki (Classic Wine Cellars, Helsinki, Finland): A strong Ramonet spearmint on the nose that is powerful, opulent and very complex. In the mouth this has great intensity with very complex fruit and fine terroir elements. Recognizable as both Ramonet and Batard. This is weightier than the Leflaive Chevalier, even if it doesn't quite match the crazy intensity of the Chevy. This is a wonderful wine drinking very well tonight and a really fine Grand Cru. Strenghtens my belief that the 2001 vintage can be really excellent on the Grand Cru level.

Good pale color (the relief was palpable). Rich, broad, beguiling Batard aromas but with a streak of quinine across the top, and the signature spearmint of Ramonet. Great inner mouth texture, energy and perfume; no shortage of minerality. Ineffable fruit component, tropical without being at all exotic - perhaps dried mango, plus red berries - and with perfectly "suspended" sucrosity, no excess weight at all. An almost red-wine impression (I wondered whether the site has "red" soil). At first became more expressive with air, then tightened up a bit. Hard as hell to resist now, but I would like to try this again in three to five years.

Light to medium yellow. The nose of intense spearmint and some smokiness already had us smiling like village idiots. Then, subtle with the faintest whiff of wood and completely poised in the mouth with continued herbal qualities but the sense of ripe fruit without being able to define exactly what type of fruit. Beautifully lemony acidity and anise to balance its perfect weight-not too big or oily. Long, long finish develops some creaminess after a couple of hours. Compelling, fresh, and very much alive-this was simply a great bottle that provides hope (perhaps unjustified) for the aging of white Burgundy.
