Medium deep brick red. Aromas of cedar, tobacco, blackcurrant, leather, black pepper, cardamom and nail varnish. Hint of reservoir water. Finely grained chewy tannins. Blackcurrant acids and walnut bitterness. Medium body. Palate of prune, cassis, sloe, juniper wood, walnut, bay leaf and harrowed soil. vino conservato per anni in ambiente a temperatura e umidità controllata. aperto circa due ore prima, tappo molto secco. (no decanter)

Sensual nose of florals and new rubber bands (light touch) and forest floor. Mild, pleasant tannins. Lengthy mid palate acidity. Remnants of red fruit continue to percolate after a two-hour decant. Hints of spices (primarily white pepper) as the wine level dips in the glass. Finished with a perfectly ripe bright af red cherry. @ Rezdôra

Definitely showing its age, as the color is starting to turn brickish at the edges. But still shows a fragrant nose of cherry fruit and a bit of baking spice. Medium-bodied, it displays cherry fruit with some plum, and develops some earthy (herbal?) and baking spice notes towards the lingering finish. Mellow tannins and bright acidity give it nice balance and freshness. I can’t say I remember how fruit forward this wine was the last time I drank it, but it’s incredible that it’s still quite lovely so many years later...

Medium reddish garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries & strawberries with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty, cocoa/coffee, spices, leather, tar, anise, herbs, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with earthy notes, mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering smooth supple finish. Drinks quite well at 25 years of age but doubt any further development would occur from additional aging.

Another bottle, even nicer than the last one... full and smooth, a mouthful of Sangiovese with a Cabernet overlay. Some bricking in color but still has a fresh taste, lots of dark cherry. It's certainly at it's peak and might even be a tad past its best, but oh so enjoyable.

Somewhat translucent and slightly developed pomegranate color with a wide, thin and almost colorless rim. The nose feels savory, somewhat developed and surprisingly herbaceous for a Tignanello with aromas of tobacco, beef jerky, sour cherry, some bell pepper tones, a little bit of sandy earth, light plummy fruit, sweeter nuances of chokeberry marmalade, a hint of chili and a herbaceous touch of leafy Cabernet character. The wine is full-bodied, velvety smooth and somewhat developed - yet not old - on the palate with pretty savory flavors of sour cherries and wizened blackcurrants, some vegetal bell pepper tones, a little bit of tart red plum, light tobacco tones, a hint of beef jerky and a touch of cedar. The wine is quite structured with its moderately high acidity and still quite grippy firm tannins. The finish is moderately grippy and somewhat developed with dry, savory flavors of wizened sour cherries, some ripe blackcurrant tones, a little bit of leather and woody hints of cigar box and pencil shavings.
A nicely developed, complex and surprisingly herbaceous vintage of Tignanello where the vegetal and slightly leafy Cabernet notes have taken somewhat more noticeable presence than is typical. These herbaceous tones and cedary wood notes lend a noticeably Bordelais air to the wine, which suits it really well. Although very attractive in style, this vintage doesn't reach the levels of the most impressive vintages - lacking some depth and intensity in comparison. Nevertheless, this is a very lovely vintage of Tignanello, slightly lighter and more herbaceous in style; perhaps developing at a slightly faster pace, I doubt this wine this wine isn't going to develop much more from here and although it will most likely keep for many more years, it won't be as long-lived as some Tignanellos.

Nice color, moderate sediment, faint nose on opening. Tight right out of the bottle, but gradually opened with air and warming from the 60 degree cellar. Clean crisp taste of Sangiovese with a bit of prune in the back.

Taste of strawberry on the initial palate, can taste slight oak and leather. Red fruit, dark cherry, alcoholic on the nose. Very smooth mid palate, no tanin at this point. Drank at the London Club with a bone in rib eye with a congnac sauce.

Dinner with Ata Rangi and Escarpment winemakers: A gorgeous, savoury, dusty nose of dark cherry, cassis, cigar box and some Piemontese tar. A beautiful wine on the palate. Quite primary for a 20 year old wine. The fruit sweetness tells you this is not from Piemonte. Blackcurrant and blackberries, as well as brushwood and dark soil on the palate. Also a little savoury mushroom, which is presumably the direction it will go. Excellent fruit volume, structure and acidity. Very good, but there's no hurry to consume this Super Tuscan.

Deep black cherry red that does not suggest 20 year old wine. The cork was perfect on this bottle. Forward nose of violets, blackberries, forest undergrowth. The palate is intense but balanced with touch of black current, wood and mineral notes. Tannins are nearly gone but still show up on the long finish. So enjoyable!

Tasted in a vertical with the 1998 and the 2004, this was my favorite of the three. Dark maroon color, starting to show a bit of mature auburn at the rim. This was opened (but not decanted) two hours in advance, and consumed over the next four hours, during which time the wine continued to evolve. The nose started with spicy, herbaceous aromas, before moving into a period with a more classically Bordelais profile, albeit with a light and fruity top note. Over time, exotic aromas of violet and habanero peppers started to mingle with the woody and earthy smells. This has a slightly sweet entry on the palate (somewhat surprising, though perhaps an echo of the light note on the nose), before broadening out across the tongue in a gentle, mature, delicious wave. This still retains a bit of tannic support but, nearing its 20th birthday, there is no reason to wait much longer on this one.

Slow-o for 4 hrs then into saucer decanter. Dark maroon with brownish tint. Very quiet nose of forest flor and mushrooms. Palate was very light prune mixed with the mushrooms from the nose. Light acidity, resolved tannins. Short finish. Really short, am amazed by other reviews that point in the opposite direction. Overall a very dull wine showing no development or complexity. Maybe it needs another 10 years? Too long for me. I have some 2009s and 10s. Will be drinking young. I do not believe all wines get better with time. Many just fade. This seemed to be a fader tonight. YMMV.

drank it in a flight with 4 super Tuscans at Brandini in Koblenz with David Schwarzwälder. Tignanello 1995 (93, for me 2nd best), Solalia 1993 (92, 3rd place), Sassicaia 1993 (94p., 1st place), Sassicaia 1996 (90p., 4th place) red berries, ripe fruits, wooden notes,a little bit animalic, in the palate dark berries, black currant, subtle wood, tobacco, nice minerality, smooth tannins, well balanced alcohol, in the long aftertaste dense structure, marmelade black berries, marmelade, good drinking point plus 5-7 years, needs still 1-2 h decantation

Followed for about 6 hours open. The core color still has the darkness of youth but the edge is tawny brown. Aroma features rosy florals, cinnamon, black licorice, plum, and brown sugar. Still put together in fine fashion, but not going to get any better so drink at will. This bottle obviously had great provenience. Great example of aged IGT and delicious, but not quite worth the tariff at today's market price of about $100. There are better vintages of Tig. 5+12+17+7= 91

Baked red berries - cranberries, currants - on the nose with charcoal, celery, bell pepper and smoke. Medium bodied, dry and refreshing palate with lean fruit and tight structure. Lilacs, flint, leather and greener notes before a touch of oak toast in the aftertaste. A greener vintage it seems. A bit like -86. I prefer this style of Tignanello. Most probably won't.

Color is ruby, medium plus in intensity. The nose is medium plus in intensity, with black fruit and red fruit, mostly cherry. The palate is consistent with the nose. The acidity and tannins are medium plus, and the alcohol is restrained at 13%. This is a subtle and elegant wine that is drinking beautifully, but it is definitely not a block-buster and should be drunk now. I was surprised that it was not bigger or more international in style and, compared to some Chianti Classicos and Brunellos of that vintage, I am not sure that it is worth the price tag.

NC Cindy Tasting, Pre-Christmas 2011 (NC Wino's Stately Wayne Manor): Not wildly dark in the glass, but surprisingly darker than the Amarone that preceded it, this was a bit funky on the pop and pour. The funk did dissipate after some time, and revealed some really nice blueberry and dark red cherry which are overlaid with significant mint. On the palate, there is nice blackberry and blueberry right up front, but it quickly gives way to too much tannin. While it does have some nice acid which leaves it lifted and fresh on the finish, and while it is still a very good wine, it definitely leaves one with the impression that it has faded and would have been considerably better a couple years ago. Still worth an 89, but if you have these (and there are over 500 bottles still showing in CT user inventories), I wouldn't wait on them.

12/16 NC Cindy Tasting (Raleigh, NC): Menthol on the nose, a big dose of tannins and a hint of blueberry on the palate with underlying acidity, but almost all of the fruit has disappeared. Would likely score it in the upper 80s, but it probably would have been better a couple of years ago.

Deep red, brick on rim. A nice nose of leather, barnyard and hints of red berries, cherries in particular. Needs some time to reveal the scents properly. Full bodied, nice fruit on the entire curve. Good acidity to balance it out and making a long finish. Tannins are there, smooth - but still there.
As the last time peaking, but still time to go.

Tribute to Giacomo Tachis, Sale e Pepe restaurant, Athens. Initially tight, used a lot of aeration to express itself. Some lactic notes faded out and typical sangiovese aromas like leather, red cherry and earth were revealed. Mid-bodied with a nice texture, firm tannins and high acidity. Long finish.Shows potential to evolve further.

The nose starts very gently, mainly in the direction of red berries, hints of oak, forest ground and leather. Evolves with time. Full bodied, nice cool fruit with a taste of red berries, morels, forest ground and hints of oak. Nice balance with the acid, not aggressive and nice soft tannins. Lacks some complexity on the palate, however the lengths is great.
I should underline that at the moment this one needs time and air to show its true nature.
I judge this one to be peaking at the moment, but no rush. It should be fine for the next 4-5 years and I would expect some secondary tones to appear as well.

We had this wine tonight with friends -- first course crispy mushroom lasagna, second course veal marsala. We started off with leftover 2000 Felsina Rancia Riserva, which was really impressive on the second day. I popped and poured the Tignanello, and when we tasted it I asked for descriptors. "Just say it's perfect!" I wouldn't go that far, and I wish it had had more air time. Still, this is a really well made wine. Dark red color fading to garnet and a slight gold edge. Sweet bouquet, my friends said "blackberries!" and that sounded right. Earth and acid on the palate, balanced by nice dark fruit flavors. Good balance, plenty of acidity but it's there with some nice fruit. Bright aftertaste. Very enjoyable wine. Reading other reviews, I should have decanted this 24 hours ahead I think. Still it was much appreciated.

This wine seems to take an age to open up. We sampled roughly 4 times over a 24 hour period. On open it was very closed with very little nose and a lot of alcohol. After about 7 hours it was consumable. After 24 it was reasonably pleasant but we were not wildly enthusiastic. It has a good reputation as other tasting notes seem to suggest. Nose remained light for the entire tasting period. It was noticeably bitter and astringent on open and the finish short and acidic. After 24 hours, the palate was much kinder. Still a rather brusque finish but at least the fruit was detectable, but not exactly elegant. Sort of a muted pomegranate shading to a darker berry flavor.

Much better than I expected from previous notes. Colour still very strong, deep reds, no browning out yet. Initially a little closed but then left for two hours and eventually drunk with simple pizza and a green salad. Chocolate and strawberries, some cherry on the nose but the palate is more earthy; wooden boxes, damp leather but still a vestage of chocolate. Some ash or cinder flavours creep in. The flavours are very well integrated and harmonius, nothing ascerbic or gripping about it. The alcohol content appeared high although the label says 13 per cent; I suspect more. This was really very very good and not in any way past it's best.

Seems to be an anniversary of sorts with this wine. But the flavor profile is quite consistent in that there is still very nice plummy cherry fruit, nicely integrated vanilla oak. With perhaps a bit more earthiness this time around. And still really great with pork (pork chops this time around).

The 1995 vintage with its long and hot summer resulted in a very late harvest towards October. Despite some hail in August, Tuscany wines saw physiologically ripe grapes that were harvested in acceptable if not good condition. Antinori implemented severe selection and thinning which saw quantities yielded at below average but at the desired quality levels. Subsequent wines from 1995 Italy are fruit driven with marvelous balance and structure for near to mid-term enjoyment.
Tasted in Singapore. 13.0%. A blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A wine with slight cork characteristics yielding nice berry and dark cherry flavors. Medium-bodied with some domant tannins and a floral earthy finish. Enjoyable now. Drink between 2002 and 2012. US$ 99.00 to US$135.00. Decanted for about 2 hours, tasted before and after decanting. Very deep color, quite opaque. Expressive sexy nose- sweet dark plums, chocolate, integrated oak, a little pepper or earth. This starts well on the palate, but dies a little in the middle and at the end, becoming quite astringent. The acid is nice, the tannin is too much for the fruit on the palate. 96 point nose, 88 point body. This was probably better when it enjoyed more youthful exuberance.

NobleRottersSydney - Italian night (Darling Mills, Glebe): Despite a rather murky garnet colour, the wine is clean on the palate. Strong astringent cabernet influence; tannins and plenty of front-palate weight. The savoury sangiovese element is not overshadowed. Pleasantly earthy, but far from an epiphany and at A$85 no bargain...

Tasted at blind horizontal 1995 Super Tuscan tasting at the Bungalo. Dark ruby with red rim. Moderately intense nose primarily of wood (oak) and currants. Very tannic, with oak, currants and vanilla on palate. Needs time to shed its grapiness and hopfully strut its wares.

YMMV.

red berries, ripe fruits, wooden notes,a little bit animalic, in the palate dark berries, black currant, subtle wood, tobacco, nice minerality, smooth tannins, well balanced alcohol, in the long aftertaste dense structure, marmelade black berries, marmelade, good drinking point plus 5-7 years, needs still 1-2 h decantation

Deep red colour, no direct sign of age.

The 1995 vintage with its long and hot summer resulted in a very late harvest towards October. Despite some hail in August, Tuscany wines saw physiologically ripe grapes that were harvested in acceptable if not good condition. Subsequent wines from 1995 Italy are fruit driven with marvelous balance and structure for near to mid-term enjoyment.
