Yet another frail and crumbling cork - it took 10 minutes to extricate the fragments from the neck and another minute to remove them from the glass first-poured. Little wonder the sommeliers in the best restaurants in Rīga and its outskirts don't want the serving hassle caused by this wine. A shame, though, since the liquid beneath the poor quality cork is in the large bulk of cases worth the hardship.
Anyway, this bottle had a level about 2 cm below the cork, which level seemed appropriate for its age. As did the colour, a golden full yellow. Floral upon opening, but verging to citrus and following with hints of orange. But thereafter there were hints of freshly baked sweet pastry and menthol-rub. On the nose, a bit of age showing in this bottle overall, but with complex nuances.
It's a big riesling in the mouth, but there is a captivating and caressingly sweet and pungent middle which wins one completely. The intense and spicy finish may not be ideal, but the middle is simply magnetic. Fine, yet again, but the point has been reached where this wine needs to be followed more closely.

Stored in a northern European cellar shortly after release. Though the cork broke in two midway through the extraction process and left particles in the wine, that was a small price to pay, since it had done its job. A fullish yellow colour and a nose that was full of floral and blossom scents belied the fact that this is now 24 years old. A hint of wax at one point. Lovely, fully-flavoured, yet gentle and aristocratic mouth with sweet, yet slightly pungent stonefruit flavours. No decay for the duration of the sitting. Easily fine and, based on this showing, there is no reason to think this vintage of CFE won't give the same level of pleasure at thirty years of age.

Good fill despite a slightly dry and crumbly cork. the wine is still a limpid light yellow. Muted before an hour in the decanter and glass. Then very fresh and focused aromas of lemon, wet stone and white flower with a touch of petrol. Bone dry on the palate with lovely lift and length. Very harmonious and very much in its prime. This was a wonderful pairing with the Swabian onion tart. My last bottle today, and all have been sublime. Great vintage for this cuvée.

Old leak and ullaged to 3cm below cork, which came out with difficulty, though intact. Darkish amber colour was a visual foretaste of what would follow. Both the nose and palate featured old and decaying oranges, and while the wine had oxidized sufficiently for this to be the dissatisfying dominant trait on both the 1st and 2nd days, I could still taste the same ample yellow-fruit sweetness which much better bottles of this wine have provided in the past. While I have had a sufficiently good number of ullaged bottles of riesling generally not to worry about low levels, this was clearly not the case with this poor old bottle and I'd approach any future low-level CFE 1997 with circumspection.

Nice wine, wedding year present from a friend. Orange / browning and fully mature aromas and flavor, not so much Riesling as old Kalin Semillon with a twist of orange. Very cool.

Mature golden color with pear, oyster shell, florals, and brine on the nose. This has a cool juxtaposition of the breadth and waxiness coupled with great cut and focus that Trimbach's CFE and CSH seem to achieve better than nearly everyone else. Bone dry and chiseled on the palate, with more oyster shell, waxy lanolin notes, citrus pith, pear, and subtle florals. I also really like Adrian's pineapple descriptor, almost like dried pineapple. There is this fascinating a seemingly counterintuitive honeyed feel to it in spite of its being completely dry. It's mouthwateringly fresh and drinks like mineral water. A serious and singular expression of riesling that is fully mature and at this point certainly more about soil and acid than fruit, but drinking very well. Contemplative and outstanding. Not for everyone, but certainly for me

56th TWIGS Meeting (KC and Molly's place): Served blind. Cork. 13% a/v. Gold straw colour. Nose shows kerosene, dried lemon, apple and a touch of oak. The palate seems better than the nose - still has some freshness and vibrancy. There’s honey, toast, orange peel. Low-medium acidity now. Fully mature.

Deep golden color. Pineapple, apple and mineral on nose and palate, as well as some aged petrol flavors and aromas. Tasted a day after the 98 vintage of the same wine, this came across as less well-balanced, thinner, perhaps more "classic" in profile? But I preferred the 98, which was just singing. Still, an excellent riesling, probably has several more years of good drinking ahead but I would recommend finishing up remaining bottles sooner than later ...

NobleRottersSydney - aging Riesling (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork, 13%} [Graeme] This was a deep yellow, but also exuded a rather stale air, which didn’t improve in the glass. Stale browning leaves were the overall impression. It left the most memories on the palate as texture – a gentle grape-skin furriness – rather than flavour, which disappeared fast. The medium-weight but somehow hollow presence said it was once a wine of real heft; I don’t know how typical this bottle is at twenty. Cork was half soaked but level was OK. Did the label no favours, at any rate.

Riesling night at HaiSous (Chicago, IL): Purchased on release and stored since. This is one of the best bottles of CFE I've had, in that it comes the closest to what I love about Hune. Pineapple and some tart pears on the nose, as well as a little reduction. The palate is larger scaled, but this has really awesome linear acidity to balance it out. Really fresh and surprisingly young and vibrant.

A perfect cork. Light yellow. A hint of petrol and lemon on the nose. This was incredibly fresh- stony acidity with peach and lemon flavors. Not at all tired- I would never guessed this was 20 years old-this could have easily aged several more years.

Whites from France and Spain: Light petrol, cold lemon, lemon cake, fennel and cammomile on the nose. On the leaner, lighter side, but may be it only felt that way because it went after two oaked whites.

Cork crumbled a little. Bright golden colour. A little bottle stink soon blew off. Subdued nose - honey, lemon. Maybe apricot. The palate still carries the flavours reasonably well. There's a sense of the acids that once were. Overall though, you feel the best years are now behind it.

Despite cork issues with other bottles, the cork came out intact and it gave rise to a confident feeling about what was to follow. Yellow colour. Looking good. The nose briefly hinted towards the gewurztraminer end of the riesling spectrum, but only this one time. Thereon, the wine showed white and yellowish fruit, with fruit stones there too. A sense of stonefruit being dissected. Fruit candy. Fullish body. Lovely and persistent sweet fruit from the start till the finish, and while it was as long as the Georg Breuer Nonnenberg Riesling 2003 which it followed, it didn't quite have the same intensity. A spicier finish, too. Yet, this CFE, cellared shortly after birth, was clearly fine plus and one of the best bottles I have had over the twelve years I have been drinking this wine, and in no rush to be drunk-up.

Golden yellow colour. Nose dominated by yellow apples, with some baked apple & citrus notes, a bit of honey, mineral and some petroleum notes. Dry on the palate, medium(+) bodied, yellow apple, some citrus, good minerality, high acidity, a hint of bitterness. Its pedigree is a bit more obvious on the palate than in the nose. Definitely developed but sticks together fine. Fans of really mature Riesling may not feel a rush to finish their last bottle of this, but it is likely to be on its way down rather than up.

Cork crumbled slightly. Golden straw colour. Lemon curd, lemongrass, minerals, slight oily notes. Palate is so harmonious now. Acids have melted away, leaving a medium to full palate which resonates with nice length.

Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune & Cuvee Frederic Emile Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Dark in colour, dark honey style, points immediately to the rich wine this is. Full on ripe fruit feel on the nose, less mineral. Fully round on the palate and the acidity is well present but the ripe character of the wine pushes it off balance and just did not feel right. Not an off dry, not a dry wine, a hybrid one but much like hybrid cars of the 1990s it just didn’t work right. 89-90 no idea how this ages.

Dinner @ B & A's: Blind. Far paler colour, lightest straw. Again, classic Alsace Riesling nose. Older than it looks considering the reasonably well developed Vaseline top notes. Fresh and correct and focused on the attack. Good lime and mineral frame around which the Vaseline and kerosine and a degree of textural richness sit well. Trimbach too I think, but having pegged the other of the pair as CFE I wonder whether this is CSH. Lots of class and line here. ****

Halvflaske. Farge: Dyp gylden Duft: Moden rieslingnese, petroleum, moden sitrus. Etter noen minutter mer oksiderte, sherrylignende toner. Smak: Lite frukt igjen, veldig moden, noe syre, men relativt rund. Lett hint av fino sherry (aldersoksidering). Trolig lagrings-/flaskefeil.

The cork broke in two upon removal, and not for the first time with this wine in this vintage! Decanted and drunk at a coolish cellar temperature. A dull, full yellow, but it brightened-up towards the end. A lovely nose. Spring blossom more than merely floral. Some tangerine. Minor lime, then some faint diesel fuel, and wax. The terpenes and paraffin characters faded quickly to show up the gorgeous quality of the fruit here. Sweet 'n' sour candy. It's not nosed better than this to my recollection. Lightish-medium body. Pungent yellow citrus to begin, but the sweetness emerges very quickly. Good lemony acids. Not as concentrated as I'd expected at the start, but this issue in large part rectified itself later on. No fade here. Fine plus.

Was a little nervous reading all these notes saying that this wine was on the decline as I still have several bottles left. I opened one and was "spooked" when the cork disintegrated. I decanted the wine though and the nose was wonderful. Bone dry. a hint of petrol and lime. nice minerality. a near perfect FE and showing no signs of decline in my opinion!

I love the Cuvee Emile's, and this was the first time I had a '97. Alas, in my opinion the bottle was past its peak. A thin, watery feel throughout the drinking. Gained in power during cooking and dinner, but always felt a little tired. Looking forward to drinking the other vintages in my vertical collection, but I wouldn't get any more '97's.

Archetypal Riesling - the dictionary entry for proper Alsatian. Excellent acidity and this particular bottle seems very young with fine lime/citrus, petrol and something floral. Light yellow with just a hint of gold, nothing frivolous, confected or oily about this wine that cuts through duck fat (confit with peach and fig jams) with precision and crisp Ribeauville' grace. If this bottle is indicative, I would guess that this wine will live a very long time, although for my tastes, it won't get much better. At 4 hours out, this undecanted bottle is singing and still strong. Just the thing for choucroute.

Same experience as last time where for a good few minutes, we were unsure whether this was corked. Once again, this mustiness turned out to be mature Riesling goodness with a lot of high toned petrol coming out. Lemon, green herbs. Essentially delicate but great impact and acidity. Fully expressive and ready. Last bottle and I have loved each one.

Bill Lawrence hosts the Tuesday Supper Club (Bill's): My last bottle and showing more maturely with more prominent petrol notes than in the past. Typical lime and mineral flavors and aromas with relatively low acid and and plump character, typical of '97. Rich and expansive on the finish. Paired nicely with Bill's sauteed Nantucket Bay scallops with lime and ginger butter sauce. Low A-.

Decanted. Drank with Dad and Sue. Chinese food. Hints of citrus and white flowers on the nose. Rocks, polished stones, petrol, and and lovely citrus cut in the moth. Rich mouth coating feel that reminded me of chardonnay. Not over-oaked chardonnay but a nice palate-dense chablis. Some pear on the dry finish. Improved in the glass over three hours. Great stuff.

This wine was shy at first, giving away very little at the breginning. In a way similar to the Clos St. Hune '97. Opened up nicely as it aerated and warmed up a bit. Floral and mineral with a bit of swetness. Great balance medium+ finish. This could hold longer I guess but very enjoyable now. The fact that the acidity is not that sharp may suggest you don't want to miss this. You may gain on complexity but it may cost the structure. My take is to drink it up within the next 2 years.

Fairly light. Strange aroma that cleaned up and eventually just declared itself as old Riesling, with more typical petrol over time. Light, full of green fruit and mint, precise and delicate. This continued to grow and develop in the glass. It started behind but finished ahead of the '98 tonight because due to its greater lift and complexity.

Now we are talking riesling! So many times I've been disappointed with riesling when a supposed dry riesling has the minerality and stones on the nose but is completely sweet on the palate. This puppy's aromatics had rocks, cement, polished stones, petrol, and even some white flowers waft up from the glass as I swirled. Couple the aroma with a hint of citrus and a rich mouthcoating feel that reminded me of chardonnay. Not California over-oaked chardonnay but a nice palate-dense chablis. Some ripe pear and a defiantly dry finish made me a believer in this Alsatian beauty. 93 pts.

Tasted at Dirk's 50th. Medium straw color. Nose of petrol, lemons, and stonefruit galore. On the palate, lemon, minerals, green grass and searing acidity. This is classy, but a bit too lean for my taste. There was a touch of bitter oil mid palate, which cleared on the finish. If you like Alsatian riesling, this is classy stuff. But you better love acid.

My first high end Alsatian Riesling, and it has been stored well since its purchase in 2002. No big surprise that a healthy dose of the petrol goodness dominated the aromatic profile, fresh peeled citrus skins, and we wouldn’t have a nice Riesling on our hands if we didn’t see a healthy dose of minerals now, would we? No, we wouldn’t, and they were there in abundance thankfully. I loved the wines chalky texture, but was most impressed at the expansive and richer by the second finish. My thoughts kept thinking of a high end Chablis. Other notes lean towards this wine being at peak, I don’t see that today. Plenty of upside potential still.

11/23/08: pale yellow with a nose of apples, petrol, and minerals. The flavors are crisp apples, lemon, mineral, chalk and petrol. This is a lushly concentrated wine with medium body and good acidity. Long finish with citrus, chalk and oh by the way lots of petrol.

a hint of gold, but not much color. lovely nose of chalk, mineral, petrol, and lemon. typical CFE aromatics. Much more consistent with other vintages than I expected from this soft Alsace vintage, and past experience with this wine after its release. Has firmed up in a good way. Lost baby fat, and is more of a traditional CFE, which is fine in my book. Ready to drink. Palate of the lemon chalk, and some petrol type development. Acids maybe a bit softer than normal, but a nice showing for this vintage. nice balance, med weight, and acides carry the fruit through a long finish. very nice.

What a mixed bag this wine has been. Must be the corks. I would rate it anything from 75 to 93 points. This bottle was one of the best rieslings I have had. Cork crumbled on this, no idea why. Had to decant it through a stainless steel strainer. Satrted out well, mineral and nice, no t too structured, but not a lot going on either. Really "popped" after about 30 to 45 minutes in the decanter and continued to improve. Really became very aromatically complex. Everything you'd expect from this wine. The ripeness of the vintage makes it more approachable than the 1996, but it doesn't have any excess heat or over-ripeness at all. Excellent showing for a wine that will age gracefully for a long time.

Quite deep colour. Nose was very intense at first with distinct petrol aromas, but also a more chemical rubbery smell which blew off with a little air and left apple fruit with those petrol aromas. Palate was very crisp and dry, lots of lime and crab apple fruit, very dry but crisp finish. Initially I thought that this was past it, but it smoothed out and improved with air. Very minerally and dry. Interesting rather than delicious.

Trimbach too I think, but having pegged the other of the pair as CFE I wonder whether this is CSH. Lots of class and line here. ****

Fine plus.

If this bottle is indicative, I would guess that this wine will live a very long time, although for my tastes, it won't get much better.

Initially I thought that this was past it, but it smoothed out and improved with air. Very minerally and dry. Interesting rather than delicious.

Longueur moyenne. Cela "sent" le petit millésime...

Seattle Tasting Group does Alsace (Bellevue, WA): Petrol on the nose. This is a bit more focused than the Weinbach, slatey, a bit less intense. This is dry, bone dry, a bit limey. Less interesting than the Weinbach, less giving.

Light yellow, very elegant nose of dry candied fruit and slightest petrol. Good concentration, taste on the lighter dry side, dry, goes really well with spicy food. V different from a ZH, does not have the creamyness nor the mouthfilling texture. Good, will appeal to none wine lovers.Marks are for the overall balance, but is not an in your face type.

Medium yellow color. This wine had a bizarre - but not unpleasant - rubber tire fused bouquet. Large bodied and dense, with sweet fruit and good concentration. I was expecting some petroleum scents, but none showed up. Quite a unique wine, this, with good intensity and flavour composition - especially when paired with food.

This wine was a light yellow color. A dry style with an aroma which came off as a little musty but very intrigueing. This wine was interesting to drink next to the Clos Ste. Hune for comparison. This wine seemed a little rougher around the edges and more raw. It had notes of spice, lychee, pine and some nuttiness. Well rounded with a delightful finish. 91 points.

Sydney MW Summer School; 1/26/2002-1/27/2002 (Sydney Airport Stamford Hotel): More subtle nose here than the regular ‘reserve’ bottling, although not without a certain similarity. Lime and lemon, minerals, but more concentrated. Really needs some time though; this is hard to assess at this age/time.
