Quite quiet, tea, earl grey, herbaceous, spices, chai spice, overripe blackberry fruits. Perhaps not the most energetic or fresh example of 1985, but entirely mesmerizing nonetheless. Delicate and incredibly detailed. Layers of complex spice and drying fruits. The very generous owner of this bottle wasn’t thrilled but I was very happy to spend the evening with this and study the intricacies and watch the development. A unique wine in a dimension of its own, even if this bottle wasn’t as mind-expanding as it can be. I’d also say that this was in the middle of a massive blow out dinner and much of the nuance may have been lost on the fray and this would likely have shown stronger in isolation. Maybe.

La Paulee 2020 - Gala Dinner (Pier 60): 004085/5443. Heat-damaged, but this is still RC. Underlying wine is tremendous. What a shame. 94 for the showing

Romanée-Conti v. La Tâche: [Magnum] This is quite different from the '85 La Tâche as this has a more secondary underbrush and earth driven nose but then a very fresh and stemmy floral note comes through. Complex notes of coffee grinds and smoked seaweed. Whole cluster is evident in the stalky and rather green palate. Palate is simply incredible though. Rich and dense but a symphony of flavours overall. Perfectly constructed with massive flavours, hedonistic and spicy vosne juice, transcendent balance, and a soaring finish. Incredible.

Darker overall with a brooding presence versus other recent bottles. Dark Asian spice, still remaining tannins. Elegant but still some softening in store here and modest upside. 95-96

Cork fell into the bottle on opening and the wine was fully oxidized. Great looking bottle otherwise.
