Nebbiolo 1999-2009 at Gemma. Generous 1 day old sample from DS. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Superb! Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of deep red plums, earth, spices, tobacco tar, bits of tertiary tea and mushroom. Developed. On the palate, dry, just about high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), integrated structured high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red plums, concentrated sour red cherries, earth, mushroom, spices, tea leaf, tobacco tar. Long finish. Excellent quality. Almost fully mature and good to go! Fresher than expected for a 2000.

This was as close to perfect as can be. Fully mature with fine grained, fully integrated tannins, leather, tobacco, eucalyptus, truffle, dried flowers and spices. WOW!

After multiple bad bottles of 20-plus year old Barolo, I was starting to lose hope. This bottle revived it
The 2000 Scavino Rocche Riserva has intense and penetrating aromas at opening and with time reveals an intense bouquet of wet tea, herbs, blunted black fruit, and tobacco. Rich and sensual, but layered without being boorish, the palate is accessible, attractive and enticing. Great acidity, youthful tannins and a bright finish; excellent with upside and more please as this is in an early drinking window

Dinner with Nonna (Donnhoff, Scavino, Borgogno, Castell’in Villa): This is OK and exactly what I was expecting. It shows modern, with a little age. It is dark, brick-ish, with fruit akin to allocated Cabernet Sauvignon, with maybe a dab of Neb tar, and cherry. I cannot imagine this every being like the 1982 or 1985 from Scavino. Decent, but unexciting wine, bottle not finished.

nose- tea , baking spice mouth - quite round, generous fruit with a lovely tart cherry pie quality. more integrated than many of its competitors tonight making it the WOTN. still though with a tannic spine. "friendly"
