Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center with oranging rims. The medium intensity nose put forth tan spices, plum, cherries, and minerals.
While the overall texture of this wine was reasonably Burgundian, it still certainly had a edge of tannin and firm acidity. It had good richness and length.
This showed better balance than the 78, if not as much fruit. I believe it would have benefited from extended aeration as it still seemed a bit tight. Can it show better?

In gorgeous form and still with many years of life left, the 1970 Monprivato was a dark, earthy and perfectly mature expression of Barolo. The bouquet was an earthy mix of moist soil, animal musk, parchment, worn leather, and dried strawberry. On the palate, I found an elegant expression with silky textures and a perfect balance of acid and still-lively tannin. Notes of dried cherry, minerals and a hint of tart citrus filled the senses and lasted into the long finish, along with a hint of inner dried florals. I wish I could have spent hours with this wine.

Lunghissimo. Vino semplicemente incredibile.

(Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato) This was mature Monprivato. The nose was perfection. All the classic Monprivato aromas were there all harmoniously integrated. Geraniums, forest, violets, roses, minerals and cherries. A real stunner. Perfect harmony in the mouth with lush fruit that still seemed on the youthful side. Did I say that this wine had perfect harmony? Well it did. This will keep for at least twenty more years. Mauro said this was made from a unique clone of Nebbiolo called Michet. Apparently only 3 to 4 percent of Nebbiolo in Piedmont is planted to this clone.

Bring a Great Nebbiolo (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Magnum double-decanted around noon.] Black fruit nose with some oxidation noticeable. Similar in the mouth. Drinkable but not enjoyable.
