Hermitage's Dinner (Noizé): Purple colour. Something floral on the nose - bluebells? A savoury wine but there's also a real delicacy to the structure here - light on its feet isn't the right way to describe it but - perhaps of this flight this is the wine taking the most direct route to its destination. If the Chave was my favourite of the 01s, this might pip it for the 99s. Or maybe not. Or maybe yes. How often to all the wines show at such a level - especially at this age?

Hampshire N Rhone Feast (Chesil Rectory): Colour - garnet, no bricking. On the nose - hint of earth, maybe some black fruits, clean as a whistle. On the palate - again - clean as a whistle, it’s a product of the soil, felt I struggled to engage with it after the thrilling cornas but this is a really good wine, full of character and a sense of place, and a treat to taste.

Christmas Wimps (La Tromplette, Chiswick): Opaque ruby/garnet. Dark fruit, iron, smoke - a touch reticent on the nose. Deep, savoury black fruit on the medium/full bodied palate, good length finish with some slightly firm tannin showing. ***1/2

Dark red color, encouraging. Nose is leathery and well-fruited; still young for an eighteen year old Rhone. On arrival, lots of soft tannin and balanced acidity. A midlife Hermitage in the mouth, big fruit and big roasted meat. Medium lenght and medium intensity finish. No hurry on this one. Bottle one of one.

Excellent. Developing secondary aromas. Great structure and elegance. It can be drunk now. However, I think it will peak in five years.
