  • Translucent, slightly maroon pomegranate color with a completely colorless rim. Very developed and slightly oxidized nose with aromas of smoke-cured meat, dried cherries, some cherry marmalade, light iron notes of bloody meat and a hint of mushroom. The nose settles nicely in the glass, letting the fruit flavors come a bit more to the fore, masking the aged notes beneath, but still it's quite evident from the nose that the wine starts to be past its peak. The wine is moderately full-bodied and silky smooth on the palate with flavors of roasted spices, sour cherries, some dried dark cherries, light aldehydic notes of salt-cured meat, a hint of licorice and a touch of dark berry marmalade. The wine is structure-wise still pretty tightly-knit with moderately high acidity and somewhat grippy, ample tannins. The finish is quite robust and savory with aldehydic flavors of salt-cured meat, roasted spices and some dried red cherries. The tannins pile up slowly in the gums towards the end of the aftertaste.

A drinkable, old Barbaresco that has obviously seen a bit too much oxygen during its lifetime. The wine was going downhill and had been going for some time, but the wine was still far from dead - only not showing its best anymore. It's hard to say whether this was only a case of bottle variation or if all the bottles are in similar condition. If the latter is true, not really worth the 130€.
