This wine continues to impress on how well it ages and retains such high levels of freshness after 25 years. Tasted 2 hours after old wine decant. Deep garnet colour in the glass. Lively semi sweet aroma of plum, blackberry, pepper and candied jello. Tasting reveals a smooth integrated wine with plenty of dark black fruits showing, tannins are well rounded and very long finish of softer fruit components with leather. A real treat.

A business lunch (Restaurant Central Park *, Voorburg, NL): Gaia is the highest vineyard in Clare Valley, at 560 metres above sea level. Planted in 1986 by Jeffrey Grosset, Gaia conists of two hectares of Cabernet-Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Natural cork. This 23 year old Gaia speaks eloquently of the ageing ability of this wine. Good colour, still youthful and fresh; very aromatic nose, cassis and leafy notes, spice and leather, fresh and with very good depth, really impressive; lively palate, red and black fruit, notes of coffee and mocha, mostly resolved tannins; very good resonance and length. Lots of life. A perfect bottle, a great joy.

Under cork, which broke on extraction and was a bit crumbly. Lovely rich nose, depth and complexity that got better with air. Sweet blackberry, spice, leather, wood, vanilla, spice, cassis. Palate; sweet and smooth. Ripe, balanced, mouthfilling, tannins have melted and the finish is quite more-ish. There is enough structure to see it hold and improve a few more years especially under stelvin. In a good place ATM. 92+

Last Tuesday Supper Club (One Penny Red, Summer Hill): Served blind. Blackberry, cherry, vanilla, cream, a little leather and earth...just the beginnings of some tertiary notes but still quite primary, a little pepper here as well. Juicy ripe black fruits, alcohol is relatively restrained but present, tannins are drying and talc textured. I guessed South Australian Shiraz not Barossa early noughties... NOTE - this wine was under screw cap

Served blind. Medium minus intensity aromas of plums over black fruit, earthy and savoury notes and a touch of sweet spice, quite closed, reductive almost. Medium plus intensity acidity, plums, alcohol warmth, plenty of chalky, grippy tannins dry out the palate somewhat. I guessed Nebbiolo, New World, early noughties. NOTE - this was under cork
