Had a rough start with some volatile elements, but recovered after a few minutes of swirling and rest in the glass. Nice garnet core, faded solidly to the rim, bright. Cherry and marl, with light floral and herbs tucked well into the background. The medium-bodied palate follows the nose, nothing exciting, but it's got the acid we need to power through some ground elk cooked in a Tex-Mex style. It proves a good complement to the elk dish, actually showing us much more about the wine than when we tried it on its own. A nice mid-week bottle that lived up to its price-point, though it is nearing the end of its run, so drink thru 2015.
Aerated to decanter, then served straightaway, non-blind.

Medium-light to light garnet in color with clearing at the edges. Moderate & straight forward nose of ripe red fruits of cherries & berries, a bit pruney, floral overtones of rose petals, some cedar, earthy, some tar & minerals. Medium to medium-light bodied with ripe red fruit flavors of dried cherries & cranberries, earthy, minerals and a hint of spices. Lingering finish. Drink up as it is headed downhill. A well known wine critic rated this a "90." Fortunately, found it for $20 on a closeout. Otherwise, I'd pass on it. Indicative of the 2003 vintage in Piedmont?

Very little to talk about. Closed nose and very little bouquet. Slight strawberry flavor. Very forgettable, but no glaring flaws. Seems that 2003 was a wash for Piedmonte.
