  • And the last bottle was the best... Powdery sediment decanted off to leave a bright glowing wine at the pinnacle of its powers. Complete. Maderised cherry and leather. With its evolution I am less than confident that I would not have called this as a 1970s cote de nuits if served blind. A most fitting send off.

  • Originally I had planned to decant this wine and serve it for lunch, however my best laid plans went to the wall and I ended up corking it and drinking it over dinner by which time the wine had undoubtedly lost some of its concentration and fruit. That being said, this remained a superb bottle - showing grace and a silky, deft poise only really found in fully mature wines. Currants, sous-bois and some unmistakeable soy sauce notes all came together nicely on the palate, whilst brisk acidity pulls all of the chewy, earthy notes around with a nice final twist. Needless to say, I would endeavour to drink any remaining bottles this side of Christmas.
