  • Medium red color, garnet-edged. Fruity raspberry and roast beef lead in the nose, campfire smoke, violets and black pepper right behind. Lovely. On arrival, medium-low tannin, medium acidity; energetic. Concentrated for Champet in the mouth: violets and garrigue, red fruits, meat, touch of sweetness. Medium finish. Bottle #23 of 24.

  • Medium red-garnet color. Huge nose of violets, spearmint, beef broth, black pepper, cranberry. On arrival, negligible tannin and medium acidity; bright and wonderful. Simply one of the best of the vintage: complexity and intensity to match anything I've tasted from this domaine, ever. Defying the vintage pattern, this '97 is the comparative heavyweight to its '99 sister tonight. Bottle #22 of twenty-four. Must ... find ... more ...

  • Medium red-garnet, much bricking. Aromas of beef stock, violets, earth, faintly smoky with mints and dark cherry. On arrival, balanced fine tannin lends structure to generous beefy flavor, mint and fruit: cherry, raspberry, plum. Develops well with ample fruit and more smoke and meat. Nice finish, pervasive roast beef and menthol sensation long after swallowing. A strong showing, I'd figured the series was on a downward slide. Bottle #20 of twenty-four.

  • Medium red color. The nose is enticingly fruity, meaty and floral, the combination which made me a fan of this domaine a decade back. Raspberry fruit, roast beef, violets and tar all vie for attention in a good way. Low tannin, medium-low acidity. In the mouth, there's a weedy and mixed garrigue note to go with the elements from the nose; two tasters remarked about maple as well. Silky and fat finish. Shhhh, don't tell anyone about Champet. Bottle #19 of 24.

  • Medium red. Earthy, beefy, smoky nose with floral accent. Low acid, low tannin. Raspberry fruit and leather-beef flavors lead, some weedy notes too. Smooth and supple mouth feel, medium finish. Lacks a bit of the special depth that some bottles have delivered, and without the violets I'm disappointed. Bottle #18 of twenty-four.
