Very well made SA chardonnay. Fine citrus and butter nose. Very Californian in style, reflecting the background of the maker perhaps. Loads of rich citrus and pineapple. Bit of butter. Quite clear oaking, vanilla, smoky. Some liked this aspect more than I did. Good length, decent acidity. Overall, pretty good.

I freely admit that I am not a big fan of most wines SA unless its a well aged Pinotage (as in 15-20 years well aged). Of course many are not bad, really actually decent at times, but the style (100% international and proud of it!) and hype that occasions even a barely decent bottle leaves me underwhelmed.
In any event, I recently opened a bottle and I was taken back.
Taken back that it was as good as it was, with a level of comfortable sophistication that was admirable in and of itself. This is a wine that really feels comfortable in its own skin if such a thing is possible. Its not showy but confident. I know I know - all this wine babble new age techno dribble and I haven't even been drinking all evening before typing this so bear with me.....
Hazelnut, vanilla, spice, pear and oak on the nose with a medium mouth feel and long finish echoing the same. Enough acids to keep it rolling along. Just a very comfortable wine.
I don't think that this is available in the US at present (tasted in London).

Wines of South Africa (Fix St. James, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney): Medium gold, clear, bright, legs. Medium plus intensity, developing and clean with aromas of cream vanilla, toast, butter, peach, nectarine, sweet spice, butterscotch, phenolic grip. In the mouth the wine is dry with medium acid, medium plus alcohol that is warm and rather intrudes, medium plus body and flavour intensity with flavours of peach, tends to tropical fruit, vanilla, cream, some phenolic grip, medium plus finish.
