  • Still delightful at nearly age 32, the Elderton Command Shiraz begins with a big, new oak influenced bouquet of butterscotch and vanilla with hints of plums, then transitions to a palate of velvety, caressing black fruits, sweet new oak, cascading minerality, and a long, smooth finish with touches of lingering acidity. This is truly a spectacular New World wine.

  • Slow ox for 30 minutes. This is an excellent shape for an Australia shiraz which is supposed to be past its prime. Lovely nose of plum, blackberry, roast meats and spice. The wine is fully mature, medium bodied with nicely integrated tannins, nicely balanced with no sense of being overdone, and overall quite elegant. I would drink these soon as they are quite good now and I don’t know how long they will hold at this level.

  • Clear light red with garnet on the edge. Initially dried fruit and leather, but as it opened up intense black cherry on nose and palate. Dry, nice acidity, med body, smooth tannins. 27 years old and still going strong. A little past its prime but still amazing.

  • I largely forgot about a few of these bottles Purchased 20 years ago and buried deep in my cellar. I bought these in my youth because of the high Parker score at the time. Decided to try one. Decanted one hour.

Taste: Fruity and oaky. The finish was a bit hard and un-charming. I prefer elegant, pure and finely balanced wines and in this regard this Shiraz is the opposite. I can how see how people that like bourbon oak and heavy fruit bomb wines would like this but the balance is way off. Even after 20 years the American Oak is not well integrated and much to dominant. Disappointing considering the 22 year old age of this wine.
