It's not often I am this surprised by a wine. I would have been open mouthed, if the wine was not in it. Is this Pinot Noir? Deep purple, dense both in colour and on the palate. It's quite sweet, but without the cola taste I associate with some American Pinots. It is seriously long, ripe tannins coating the mouth. A Christmas pudding sort of wine; rich and full and sweet and filling. Returning to the bottle a day later, as it was pretty much impossible to drink it all, I find it has calmed down. It still has attitude, but it has stopped shouting; it shows harmony and balance, and a distant hint of pinosity, and it's quite delicious. vg+

Dry River Tasting (Caros Wines, Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand): Dense purple/ruby with some age apparent at the meniscus. Very developed nose with considerable VA. Lots of round fruit sweetness but not a classic style. The wine displays a long finish with excellent presence in the mouth. A few over-ripe aspects in evidence combined with a hint of faded fruit suggest that this wine is just slightly pat its prime, although it will clearly last for a few more years, no problem.

Well enough made but overwhelming one-dimensional cherry fruit and there is nothing special here.
