Decanted. Best to stand up for fine sediment, though I did not. Bright blackberry fruit and waves of subtle spice and oak accents come in and out. There’s an interesting contrast of richness with high toned acidity. Drinks young at age 12 with a seemingly slow and long aging curve yet possible.

Intense but not over-ripe. There is plum and blueberry balanced with pepper and spice. Structure is excellent. Smooth tannins support the overall effect. No sign of ageing yet.

In such a sweet spot. The joy of cellaring wine is that magical moment when you open a bottle and find it is exactly where it needs to be. This bottle, this night, was perfect. Corkage at QCH. Paired with Lamb Barnsley Chop. In a head to head with Jaboulet Maison Bleue Hermitage, they both excelled, but this was the bottle we still rave about

Three Aussie Shiraz side-by-side. The Astralis 2004 (95 pts) was one of the best Astralis I‘ve had to date. Often too ripe and drying out early and while ripe, this had no excess on any front and showed very elegant, with good freshness and an even slightly weightless feel. The Brokenwood Graveyard Vyd 1998 (94pts) showed well matured with lots tobacco complementing the still intact fruit core, all embedded in a fine structure. The Duval Eligo 2012 (93pts) was less layered than the others but showed a beautiful minty freshness to counter the ripe fruit core. I don‘t drink Aussie Shiraz too often but all three showed well today.
TN: Very spicy and minty on the nose and palate. That‘s the main feature. Lots of ripe fruit, not over-ripe but still a bit too ripe for my taste. The minty component balances it nicely out. The tannins are fine but still prominent and in need of further melting. The acidic backbone carries the intensity well and the wine is not too heavy. Overall a very solid wine which should have upside on the aromatic complexity front with more age.
Decanting: Good from the go. Didn‘t need much decanting.

Tasted blind, not decanted. Intensly spicy, full of sweet Asian spices along with some leather, fruit of ripe bramble berry and red berry and fine earthy base notes. Fresh and fruit-forward palate with good tension, soft tannin and nice acidity structure. A solid Aussie Shiraz, but lacks the refinement or excitement Astralis 2004 next to it offered. Also this felt more aged than it was to an extent where I wonder how open the drinking window really is. Would give it maybe another 5-10 years.
