Community Tasting Notes (6) Avg Score: 90.7 points

  • There's a light smokiness to the aroma along with decaying rose, cassis, leather and tobacco. The palate is just mid-weight, but nicely balanced and carries some really interesting savoury things. It finishes with fresh acidity and tea leaf tannins.

  • Dark red in colour with a slight brick red, but not brown at all. On the nose, dark berry, blackcurrant, raisins, plus some beetroot. Not dominated by the tertiary aromas, which were of course also present. Cigar box, leather, earth. With more time in the glass, a little stable smell developed, wet hay, but faded away again. Everything is held together by a fresh note, like liquorice or eucalyptus, but this is restrained in the background. Soft in the mouth, thin tannins after many years of bottle ageing. On the palate, dark berries again, slightly peppery. Dark chocolate with raspberries. This is coherent, the fruit still has something to counter the acidity. Unfortunately, the length on the palate is a little lacking. [...] Full tasting note on my personal website at DMueller.com.

  • Expected the tobacco and leather. Unexpected dry fruits. Good length and finish.

  • The wine looks dark ruby with moderate sediment in the bottle. Decanted 2 hours. A nice light nose (prune). First taste of torrefaction, and then a medium body of dried fruits, with low acidity, which evolves in complexity during the meal. A very nice surprise after 40 years.

  • Perfect... no, not in any 100pt RP sort of way. This was real world perfect where moderate expectations met with perfect provenance and storage in an individual bottle of wine that while 30+ years old, somehow managed to developed without fault or flaw. Evolutionarily perfect. Like an Olympic gymnist whose maximum score may only be 16.5 due to the material of their routine, but they still may achieve perfection within those limits.

High neck fill, cork removed fully intact. Surprisingly dark ruby with a black core, though whispers of an orange sunset at the rim point to maturity. Wonderfully perfumed Margaux nose... Dark red roses, red fruits, gravel, with some tobacco leaf, and cedar. I could smell that nose every day for the rest of my life and never tire of it. On the palate this was still structured and well organized though the tannins were mostly resolved. Silky and captivating with the lovely delicate yet persistent flavors of a mature claret that were so well integrated as to defy individual description. Medium weight with fairly good concentration, good acidity, great balance, and good length. Excellent composition if you will. 6th bottle of this I've had. It's my last, though clearly the best. Perfectly paired with grilled double lamb chops... stunning!

This particular wine in this vintage could not have been any better... Perfect. Seems like effusive praise for a bottle of Cru Bourgeois, and one that I "only" gave 92 pts, but it was worth it. To bad this is a relatively obscure wine so few will probably view this TN... what a shame as this bottle deserves bearing witness.

This is why we cellar wine!
