  • Nose started with raspberry and lots of white truffle, with time the raspberry faded away and turned into more soy. Palette has a little cherry, cacao, pretty woody tannins and medium high acidity. It’s an ok Barolo, but not great at this time… and maybe never… maybe the tannins turn cedar woody and the wine finds better balance… or this is it. But I would wait couple of years and roll the dice…

  • Multi hour decant, much need too, the nose is tar and roses, very classic presentation of a barolo. The palate had extremely grippy tannins to begin with, took about another hour or so to loosen up somewhat. Once it relaxed it become much more enjoyable, with cherry notes and forest floor holding up a medium mouthfeel and medium length finish. Not spectacular but enjoyable and a solid representation of a lower range barolo.

  • Garnet in color. The aromas are complex with sour cherry, red fruits, wet leaves, hazelnut, minty, liquorice cocoa and light plums. Hints of flowers and also absinth. Full and velvety texture very fine. Subtle finish.

  • Duty free wine purchases aren't always a deal, but for 40 euros ~4 years ago, this was a solid deal for the American buyer. I scanned others' TNs and AFIELDS says it well. Modern-ish, but the barrel is not the star and it's notable that the last glass on the 4th night drank the best (tw prior nights under Coravin), gaining depth without losing energy. (CT is presenting the Jancis Robinson drinking window to 2024. It seems their windows are conservative. I'd say that well-stored bottles could go out up to another ten years.)

  • Cherry/strawberry with good acidity leaning toward something fresher like cranberry, almost underripe; dried rose; black licorice candy; some foresty/green notes; oak for sure but doesn’t dominate. Fairly light in body, almost feels like a really good and aromatic Langhe. As with previous experience I find myself liking Marchesi a lot more than I usually like modern style Barolo but this vintage feels a bit pricey for what it is. 7.5/10
