Community Tasting Notes (4) Avg Score: 85.5 points

  • Opened a third bottle to try to see what is going on here...
Excellent condition, base neck fill, cork mostly saturated but came out in one piece.
Very little browning for a wine of this age. Fruit alcohol, cedar, tobacco on nose, quite plesant and youthful.
On the palate, the acidity is very present and the tannins come across very hard with some bitterness. The wine qickly deteriorates in the glass.
This is happening too rapidly to be explained away by a wine just past its peak.
The wine showed better the following day, which suggests that it's not simply a wine past its peak. The wine softened, losing some of its harshness.
The next bottle will be decanted well ahead of time

  • As this is the first bottle of a case and the cork was questionable, I will not rate this particular bottle.
The color of the wine doesn't suggest any flaws; quite the contrary: beautiful red hue with minimal signs of aging. The nose developed nicely over two hours then faded. Nice earthy and fruity elements were present. The palate was dominated by acidity and a fairly pronounced bitter finish. Decanting and time did not significantly change this aspect. It may simply be that this wine is past its peak but the other parts do not suggest so. I will wait for the next bottle...
