  • {screwcap, 14.5%} This is Pyrus? Inky black, smelling of coconut oak and black currants? Not St George? Well, colour me shocked. Black and inky aromas and flavours. Full-bodied, with medium acidity, and medium dusty tannins, not so oaky tasting on the palate. Fairly dense though, shot with hints of jammy blackberry and no real hint of the merlot and Malbec that battle the 80% cabernet here. Twig, some herb maybe. Perhaps a bit rustic, but not much. Big warm finish though. You wonder why TWE maintain these labels, and what they leave after Wynn’s has had its pick of Coonawarra fruit. This is not much differently priced to Black label cab, richer, less savoury, more oaky, but still with some grainy Coonawarra authenticity. Finishes only really medium length, a bit patchy for palate presence. I paid $35, value is marginal at that level I think. Will hold, or mellow, might develop some complexity over a few years, but it’s a long way from the Pyrus of the 80s and 90s, which really does seem misguided to me.
