This example of the 1947 Rieussec illustrates why Sauternes is worth waiting for with a complex nose of burnt orange rind, fresh sugar, cooked maitake, and creme caramel. Its silhouette is getting a little bit fine now, so if this bottle is representative (and I suspect it is with a good color, cork, and pristine fill) it's probably best to approach these relatively soon before it loses more flesh.

Chateau Rieussec vertical (Bentley Hotel, London): Brown, but no more so than the 1988. Intriguing, enticing nose, perhaps a touch of V/A, fresh, sugared fruits, more complex, lingering, lovely
