Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • Took down a bottle for science. Ripe Mourvèdre shading more towards elegance—not slickness, I’ll have you know—grounded (get it?) with scads of earthy character, but just sophisticated enough to warrant cellaring. Dark garnet/purple robe. The nose nose balances fine plummy fruit aromas with floral and game notes making up the balance. That palate is energetic and high-toned, rather than brooding, and features ripe tannins, good mineral depth, and fine acidity. There is certainly soil and structural depth to match the mouthwatering fruit, but currently dry extract supersedes the subtle structure and offers plenty of charm that belies the bones within. I suspect this is something temporary and things may clamp down for a bit before blossoming to reveal a far more layered wine. That said, this shone beautifully with magret of duck and sweet potato pavé with broccoli Spigarello. I should probably look into grabbing a few more bottles based on this wine. Are there more exalted and perhaps more ageworthy Bandols? Yes. But is this a terrific grower worthy of cellaring? Also yes.

  • Way too young.

  • Served by the glass. Made with 70% monastrell and 20% grenache with a small add of syrah and carignan. Aromas without much depth of black plums, garrigas or balsamic. A rustic, structured, warm red with a decidedly tannic finish on the palate. It is only saved by being wrapped in a sharp, fresh acidity. Long and with some depth. However, I would need time to polish this wine.
