  • Decanted for two hours. Great nose of red currant, cranberry, herbs. This is still quite full bodied, bordeaux like but showing good balance and an elegant touch. Hasn’t yet developed the complexity the best Rougeard show but still has plenty of gas in the tank so let’s see.

  • Not quite as good as the last bottle tasted about two years ago. Overall very nice, especially for such a challenging vintage, but on this occasion it suffered from the comparison with 2005 and 2010 Bourg which were both absolutely sublime. It is of course complex and balanced, but the acidity is a bit high to my palate, and the robe was cloudy. Elegant tanins and a veru good length. Alone it would have scored a point or two higher, but it was effortlessly outshined by 2010, and even more by the stellar and flawless 2005.

Nose is more Bordeaux (pepper, some cassis), palate is more Burgundy, some spicieness from the Rhone. A friend of mine nailed it. For 2003 still fresh, at his peak. 94

  • Lychee and ripe black fruit aromatics that had me aiming toward Rayas. Palate is more balanced, but it's still quite heated.

  • I've had better bottles of this and it did deepen during the evening but didn't show the monumental depth of fruit that past bottles have shown. The first whiff showed some reduction but once that blew off it had a nose that was a bit green in an herbal cream kind of way. You start to get the deep dark fruit and bedrock with some air and a dark earth gravitas. A regal wine for sure but maybe the low temperature outside didn't allow it to show its best.

Rockss and Fruit

(Clos Rougeard "Les Bourg") The best '03 red from the Loire I have had. Ripe, rich, herbal and almost Pinot-like nose. Palate was layered, a bit oaky and very complex. Concentration was off the charts and the purity and length were mindboggling. This was years to go and only showed a touch of '03-itis. Just a hair below the '02 in quality.
