  • You need to decant Wendouree wines otherwise you do not get the most out of it. For this wine, I would say 3 hours is the minimum assuming the wine has been properly stored.

Well, it is a very savoury wine, fruits lovers, look somewhere else. Having said this, it did have plenty of fruits, except it is not obvious if you don’t engage your thinking buds. What one gets is dark fruits, licorice, tar and other herbal matters. For those who have drunk some Chinese herbal medicine, there are aspects of the Chinese herbal medicine that is in this wine in a very good way.

It expresses the grape varietal very well and there is a degree of purity or cleanliness to it that is unparalleled. Great length and a gentle finish and perhaps this was its weakness.

    Drink now or 5+ years.

  • Felt a bit blunt and clumsy on this showing, quite chunky and blocky and lacking a bit of definition and elegance. Only medium bodied but was expecting it to be a bit more nuanced in terms of flavour profile. Has good fruit density, firm tannins and good length, just unexciting for me this time.

  • Briary fruits. licorice, earth and tar. There's generous fruit but it is a wine with a savoury edge. You get mint, tobacco and other plant matter. It is an engaging wine, deep but not forced. There's no artifice, it is vinous and expressive and length is good. A treat.

  • Took a good six hours to open up. Blackcurrent, olive, menthol. Medium to Full bodied. Still very fresh. No aged characters to speak of. No noticeable change from a year ago. Superb balance for what is a medium (plus) bodied wine. Backward and needs another 10 years to start to show some development. My last bottle.

  • Medium to full bodied, deep fruited showing blackberries, coffee, fennel with smooth chalky tannins. Very earthy with some herbal, forest floor type flavours, oak is definitely a player but all in balance. Has enough of everything to age for quite some time, needs a good bit of protein to pair with.
