  Over a decade and a half ago I first encountered this cuvée, the rosé from two vintages later; that bottle has stayed in my memory, a top five champagne for the experience. Seeing this at auction recently, I decided to indulge my nostalgia.
  
  The bottle was in very good condition. A slight pop on opening, just a few lazy bubbles in the glass. Mid orange colour - I could believe this had originally been pink. Unmistakable old champagne aroma, deep and fudgy, nutty coffee and an oiliness although less than in many of this age. The taste is bright and tangy, acidity still shining. A faint prickle on the tongue. Lots of ripe fruit character, quite sunny. But for the loss of most of the carbonation, this is showing very well for its age. The next day, at least as good, maybe a touch better. [Cork + cage; 12%? abv; online auction, £90 plus fees].

  Zum Abschluß ein Champagner, der selten enttäuscht, auch wenn er unter den Prestigecuvees eher einen nicht so hohen Stellenwert hat. Elegant, ausgewogen mit einigen Tertiäraromen aber feinen Bubbles. Nicht so stark wie 1979, aber gerade auf dem Höhepunkt aus deiner gut gelagerten Flasche. 93

  Amber. Very toasty. High acidity. Finish of aged dried lemon peel. Slightly oaky. Still pleasant but not a lot of bubbbles.
