  • Col d'Orcia always reminds me of our honeymoon in Tuscany…. The bottle was in very good condition; the filling-level was into the neck, the cork was only half-soaked and came out in one piece. The wine was medium ruby in colour (with an orange hue at the watery edges) and threw some fine sediment. It offered red fruit, red currant, red cherry, tobacco, tea, espresso, spices and earthy notes on the nose and palate, with lively acidity and very good length of the dry finish. The wine was dry, a little austere and a little thin on its own, but became balanced, fleshed out and drank very well with a rib-eye steak. My wife Larissa, who has asked me to open more wines from Italy in 2020, liked it. ;)

  • Wine & Italian food with the boys from Scenic/ Tapestry at Il Mondo Vechio in Madison NJ. This was the wine which required the longest decant. Still after 30 minutes you could sense it need much more time.

Immediate strong nose of berries. The palette was mulberry and blackberries with an hint of anise. The finsh was fairly long as the more evident fruit versus the other wines came through. After 20 minutes wine revealed more earth, tar and faded berries. Finish continued for 20 seconds with blackberry and cherries most pronounced.

Had this against a Banfi Brunello 1989, a Monsanto "Il Poggio" 1990, a Col D'Orcia Brunello 1990, a Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Cavalieri del Tartufo Brunata 1990, and a Badia A Coltibuono Sangioveto 1990

  • Bud's 70th birthday lunch - the day after (Eketahuna, New Zealand): Very nice wine that opened beautifully over the day. Lean and fragrant with a beautiful core of bright acid and floral notes. Very Italian and is ageing very well in a linear style. (given as a prize for coming in 3rd for the NZ Wine Options game)

  • After an 8 1/2 bus trip, I made a quick dinner of little lamb chops, with broccoli on the side.

The bottle had been standing up for 2 weeks, so I decided to give it a go.
Very clear, with slight bricking on the rim. Floral and tar on the nose, and good grippy tannins on the palate. After an hour the palate is getting fuller, and more fruit, tobacco, and minerals coming through.

Very happy with this (and the 9€ I paid).
