Recorked, this was probably topped off with a younger vintage, due to the youth and vigor in this bottle. Still, the tobacco cedar chest, herbs, forest leaf, and spicy cherries on the nose, and the rustic, but charming, bright, earthy, red berry palate was a treat to taste.

I was immensely excited to try the 1929 Montrose, but it ended up being upstaged somewhat by the profound 1921. This wine is more evidently marked by the warm year, with a rich, chocolately bouquet that revealed notes of dark fruits, truffle and earth as it sat in the glass. The wine still boasts a great deal of volume and power, and comparisons with the 2009 do not, in fact, seem entirely specious. It was suggested that this was a less-than-perfect bottle, but I found the wine’s torrefied character perfectly consistent with the style of the vintage, though I’d defer to anyone with greater experience.

Chateau Montrose Tasting at IOD in London (2006 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1986, 1982, 1970, 1929, 1924, 1921): Wow, this is beautiful, and what a nose! Coconut (say what?), and some more coconut in the nose... candied orange and lemon peel, some banana. Extremely powerful in the palate, nice concentration and a 30+ seconds finish. What a wine!

(Quartet of 21, 24, 28, 29.) The 29 was creamy. Lighter on the nose than the 28. Again, kind of meaty. Nice, but overshadowed by the 28.Drinking the four Montrose together reminded me how interesting vertical (and mini vertical) tastings are. These were four amazing wines, a tremendous flight, and having them together, the sum of the parts exceeded the whole (or whatever, you know what I mean). A real treat.
