  • rusty red in color, nice red fruit, mint and fresh soil on the nose, good acid, bight stony flavors, along with cured meat, cherry, eucalyptus and earth, really nice food-wine with a bright mineral backbone, excellent match with a rustic supremo pizza

  • I spent a while online trying to pin down the "blend" here, which proved completely impossible. It's one of the following: 100% nebbiolo , a blend of nebbiolo and freisa, or a blend of nebbiolo, barbera and freisa. At first I thought it was a blend of nebbiolo and babera, but that seems the most remote possibility based on what little I could read. The label is no help whatsoever, and while the wine is described as Langhe here on grapestories.com, that word doesn't appear anywhere on my label. Who knows?

One or both of the guys who make this stuff worked for Bartolo Mascarello so it's very traditional in style. Subdued in both intensity and alcohol (13%), it's quite delicious. The nose is a beguiling blend of anise, violets, red berries, and mysteriously a little chocolate. The nebbiolo is tamed in the mouth, and there's soft red fruit with a supple roundness to it framed by ample acidity and gentle tannins. One hell of a pizza wine.

Producers and importers (Chadderdon here) have no inherent obligation to inform consumers about what they're drinking, and I understand that some Europeans consider the American consumers' fascination with grape varieties an unhealthy obsession. I don't feel that way at all, since I generally try to use the information to sharpen my appreciation of what the winemaker is trying to do. But nobody is indulging me on this one.

  • nose: tasty and good nose of mint, red cherries, spices and pretty herbal tones as well. Good depth to it that gives the base of this nebbiolo blend

taste: real good and balanced tones of leather, mint, spice tones and red cherries. Good medium+ acidity with good tannins

overall: a very nice wine. Offers up some attractive tones and is an accessible nebbiolo for drinking right now

  • A dang good blend of nebbiolo and freisa that's probably meant for somewhat early drinking but also has the acidic core to keep it evolving for a few years. Lots of violets and black cherry on the nose, along with darker notes of coffee and asphalt. Transparent enough to suggest birth in a rocky soil. Good length here, with some mouthsmacking acidity and that soft citrus-and-raisin bitterness on the finish that I dig so much in Piedmont reds. Medium weight in the mouth but refreshing enough for an early summer night with sauteed vegetables.
