This was impressive stuff but I suspect this bottle was not in perfect shape so it might have been more impressive still. Despite a loose cork and maybe 4-5 cm of ullage it is still a healthy red color without the slightest hint of any oxidized flavors. Unfortunately, the aroma, which started out with a spectacularly pungent old Burgundy funk with just a bit of mustiness eventually saw the mustiness become more and more prominent. It clearly wasn't TCA, inasmuch as it was restricted to the scent and the wine tasted just fine, and was a different kind of mustiness from TCA, more like old library books, but whatever it was it wasn't appetizing and somewhat marred the wine. A shame since the wine was otherwise beautiful. It was absolutely amazing to me how much richness and fruit sweetness were still here, something I certainly would not have expected from a '72. And perhaps the first Lafarge I've had that doesn't beg for more time!

OK, I understand why people spend vast amounts of money on burgundy. This was just great. It doesn't knock you over your head... this was no 100point super wine... but several hours after dinner, I'm still sitting here with a stupid little smile on my face. Not in a million years would I have guessed this was 38yrs old. Slight browning throughout, but mostly brilliant ruby in the glass. Beautiful nose, silky palate, just wonderful. What fascinated me was how much this screamed out Volnay. No sois bois, no barnyard, just silk and roses in the mouth. This is like a first love.... seems to be in a great plateau of drinkability... no signs of fading.
