  • Alcohol level illegible on the damp damaged label. Sauv 90%, Sem 10%. Very good long cork. Rich golden colour, deep enough to cause some anxiety.
The first nose is clearly free of oxidation, and it screams Sémillon to me, in spite of the modest proportion of the grape in the mix. Yellow flowers and wax, rich but not heavy. The mouth is more interesting than harmonious with bracing acidity dominating yellow plum. Pretty assertive at this advanced stage.
Unless I am mistaken, the vintage was known for its forbidding acidity right from the start; while it has kept the wine alive, it is still too prominent at age 16. Well, better that than flabby or oxidised. In the same stable, I tend to prefer Clos Floridène with its increased proportion of Sémillon.

  • 12.5% alcohol. Good cork. Pale colour. The nose is vivacious and floral, with (at times) a suggestion of a tiny remnant of SO2; I would say that the wine was well protected in its youth. The mouth is just superb, being both rich and lively.
Given that it is 100% Sauvignon, this is remarkably rich. On balance, I probably favour the extra oomph given by the Sémillon in Clos Floridène, but this is very good indeed. Nowhere near its peak yet, I would say. This is a wine to age, at least in vintages such as this one.
And all that quality under a modest Bordeaux AOC label; another case of the winemaker trumping the terroir. We will miss you Denis.
    A repeat purchase.

  • Last bottle, very rich pineapple and baked orchard fruits. Struck match notes with a savoury mineral mid-palate. Velvety and rich, while retaining vibrancy. There is some freshness lost from softening acidity, but the finish is delicious and lingering. Drink up and enjoy.

  • Keeps getting better. Rich tropical fruit has calmed down and moved into citrus territory. Gunflint and savoury qualities have grown as has a lithe minerality. Graceful, mature, but retaining freshness and energy at the same time. Quite a remarkable evolution. One more bottle left.

  • Palate tamer than nose. Notes of creamy spice, citrus, woody, cedar, oak, herbal, grass, juniper, rosemary.
