4th of 6, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, what a turnaround since previous bottles, last in 2015, with this at last beginning to show, still some tannic angularity and austerity, but fine, rather high toned complex nose and palate with the former more advanced and enough fruit to feed further upside, 12+ years. F+ (18).

A real curmudgeon when young this wine has matured into something quite lovely initially opening with that typically Burgundian rusty colour and nose but over several hours breathing it showed a fine nose of black berry fruits, red cherries, wild strawberry, touches of Asian spice and a strong dose of Burgundian earth. The palate reflects the nose and while a touch burly and rustic it still has both intensity and weight leading to a fine savoury finish. There's plenty of old fashion Burgundian character in this wine but all in a good way if you've had the patience to wait.

This wine has many impressive characters with strength and lovely fruit flavours but did demonstrate a persistent touch of VA that detracted slightly. The nose has plenty of black fruits, Asian spice, forest floor and earth with a rich palate that is well structured and mature. There is a lovely touch of persistent spicy cherry that lingers on the palate.

Vinetasters: Clos Vougeot (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Lovely perfume here with a slight kirsch/cough syrup note, but a really nice earth/mushroom thing going on in the back end as well. Tannins here are again quite potent, and there’s a slight touch of heat here. My guess is another riper vintage, perhaps 2005 given the tannin? My 7th, group's 8th.

Actually pretty promising out of the bottle (but tannin is prominent) but closes down with some air and shows some stewed fruit along with some pretty aggressive tannin. This is "austere" but with some heat showing as well, so complicated like so many 1998s. I actually think this has a chance for more with some age but we will see. B+/A-?
