  • Wow. Needs at least1 hour of decanting time. The nose is alive from the start and just keeps expanding. Typical Sous bois that this maker often offers, with rich dried red fruit notes peaking over multi-layered decaying underbrush notes. The palate needed 1+ hours of time to shine with a great balance of dark and red cherry & herb & pipe tobacco. A moderate 30 sec finish, but such rich intensity allows the memory to last longer than the tasted flavor.

I believe I opened this at the most opportune time for showing its best. With COVID, it seems like the best time is now to share special wines with special friends. That's the true purpose of saving them, I believe. I hope to be around for more such opportune times.

  • Juicy, open friendly; was guessing morey. Fine, vibrant acidity keeps this very lively throughout ...

  • Straight from the bottle there are some volatile elements here. Industrial solvent and hints of dusty cabin and some cellar. I was worried for a second it might be corked, but after a couple of minutes in the glass the volatile elements blew away completely. Decanted to get rid of sediment and the volatile elements.

Nose has leather, coffee, spices, soya, mushrooms, forest floor and some old clothes stored in wooden drawers. A nice developed nose. The palate starts off a bit sharp. Prominent tartness and grainy tannins and little fruit. Not very pleasurable. But the positive surprise comes after thirty minutes of decanting. Suddenly the fruit grows in opulence, power, concentration and structure. Ripe cherries, strawberries, vanilla pod and chocolate. The fullness of the fruit complements the tannins and the tartness, and balances everything out nicely. This is actually a distinguished elderly gentleman in his hat and coat greeting you friendly with a nod. A pleasant surprise of a wine.

  • Casual dinner at WY's place. Well aged village, and from a half, this is in a perfect drinking window. Ruby red. Intense nose of violets, cherry liqueur and strawberry jam. Old leather, forest floor, braised meat, red tea. Good acidity and lots of red fruit on the palate, good balance and length for a village. Held up very well in a Zalto, and towards the end more secondary characteristics like damp earth, leather, truffle and game. Good wine and it says a lot that on a night of Amoureuses, Bonnes Mares and Clos st Jacques, this was the wine of the day!
