Best for the first half hour after opening, the 48 las Cases is a fun old wine for Christmas dinner as it seems as packed full of chestnuts as the stuffing is! That lovely roasted chestnut note is complemented by cedar, touches of red cherry, rose, and loam. Mulchy, malty palate. Despite a good cork and a very high shoulder fill, it’s a wine that was probably at its apogee decades ago.

Bottled by Mähler-Besse, top shoulder level. Slightly dark colour; deep nose, dark pitch, old fashioned, wood, cedar, tobacco, vinous, hint of fruit, fading slightly; firm 1948-structure, lively, well-balanced, has flesh and roundness but there also is a hint of austerity, tannic grip, hint of cocoa; good length. Showing well.

Top shoulder. Very deep colour; slightly maderised nose but good underlying fruit; warm and enveloping palate, good depth, fruit (blackcurrant, raspberry, hint of amarena cherry) and chocolate, mouthfilling, earthy, broad shoulders, complex and deep, smoky, still tannic; very good length.

Dutch-bottled: Mähler-Besse. An elderly gentleman, a bit rigid, slightly oxidative, spicy and deep. Lacks charm.
