Community Tasting Notes (114) Avg Score: 95.0 points

  • Savoury dark fruits overlaid a firm backbone reinforced with a fine tannic structure. Seasoned with spice this transformed on the mid-palate to an elegant mocha finish. What lifted this from the crowd was its sheer elegance and laser-like focus. Complex yet still a little shy and retiring, it is the epitome of precision. Aristocratic, and one of the most outstanding clarets I have ever tasted. CHP 98 pts

  • Tasted with mr_mando: Decanted for 6 hours
Nose with cassis; on palate spicy, not pleasing, tannins still fresh, a bit closed. Palate not keeping promise of nose (yet?). Drink or keep, will try next bottle in 5 years. 91+ (mr_mando), 93+ (Spargel)

  • Enjoyed this with a beautiful filet mignon, Mac & cheese, and some roasted sweet potatoes. The color was an inky dark red with some bricking of the rim. So dense it stained my glass as I swirled it. The nose immediately showed crushed violets and crushed flowers with no obvious fruit; old cider boxes also found their way out. Over the course of a 4 hour decant, the wine changed with every glass with bursting red cherries towards the end. I wish I gave it more time in the decanter but I was so impatient. The first time I had this wine was 5 years ago and it was a life-changing wine for me. It is different now but still beautiful. 95 points.

  • Sweet floral cherries and ripe plums, the nose is elegant and inviting, there's a lot drawing you in but it's not overly thick or gassy. Still a little tannic, the taste is elegant, textured but light, with a round texture and a nice elegant finish. Notes of cedar, slight bit of tannic leather. A wonderful experience.

  • Raspberry seed, leather, earthy funk, and a bit of haunted house closet dust make for a Las Cases that seems a bit older than its vintage would indicate. The initial pull was a bit balled up, but it relaxed after an hour or so…kinda…

I experienced a push-pull of expansion here, with the tertiary flavors seemingly clamping down on the fruit, but then scurrying away to allow some interesting macerated black cherry notes poke through. Finishes somewhat angular, with a tannic element creeping up in the back end. A wine yearning for food pairing.

There’s part of me that feels like this is past its prime, but another part of me wonders if this just needs to smooth out its edges over the next 5+ years and see what becomes if it. For my palate, I’d like a little more fruit intensity to balance out the other elements. Score higher if you are more a friend to the funkafied. I know diehard fans will say I need to revisit this in 2040. I’ll leave that in others’ capable hands. Enjoy!

(LEOVILLE LAS CASES) Spatlese/L'Ermita/Leoville Las Cases Dear Friends, Parcels continue to arrive in the warehouse (this is the season for deliveries to us as well as to you) so here you go - fresh off the boat. All have just arrived with impeccable provenance (this is not a pre-arrival): 2007 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spètlese EXTREMELY LIMITED Delightful, pungent and full flavored for a 2007 - a wine with a long life ahead of it - should age very well, up to 15-20 years. An outright bargain for 2007 Spatlese. 2005 Leoville Las Cases 1.5lt(WS100) This set of magnums is directly from Bordeaux - it is as close to cellar-direct as I can muster. 2005 Soufrandiere Pouilly-Vinzelles "Les Quarts" (BH90-92 - Outstanding!) - as good as it gets in the Macon? 2002 Palacios L'Ermita (Priorat) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA spain9876 burg3498 bord4599 germ4788

(Leoville Las Cases) Piano Dear Friends, Two interesting magnums (that did not wine Wine of the Year) to round out the week - both of these are directly from the source with perfect provenance. The Valdicava is exceedingly rare in this format and the Las Cases should continue to increase in value for decades... Have a good weekend everyone - Both are EXTREMELY LIMITED at this price: 2001 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva "Madonna del Piano" 1.5lt 2005 Leoville Las Cases 1.5lt (St. Julien) Both arrive at some point in late 2008/early 2009 (they are on the water now) - they will be available for local pick up soon thereafter and ship during the first available shipping window (weather permitting). Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8801 Bord9131
