The bottle was in excellent condition and I nearly managed to extract the cork in one piece. The colour was still vital, with mild bricking at the edges. After a 5 hour 'Audouze' the wine was singing. There was a touch of lanolin to the aroma along with fresh cassis, tobacco, teak and leather. The palate was elegant and detailed, with a crispness of fruit but by no means excessively lean. It was complex, with interesting savoury notes and had a finish of sneaky persistence and energy. A remarkable bottle that was in the most perfect place.
