Community Tasting Notes (3) Median Score: 92 points

  • Tasting bottled history is always a treat. It allows you to look back at the events of the day, that in this case too place 110 years ago! Theodore Roosevelt was president, the Panama Canal was about to be built and the first subways in Manhattan began operation. On to the wine, light brick in color, the nose was more interesting with its Asian spice, 5 spice and shar cherry personality than the palate, which was tart, bright and acidic. But this was 110 years old, which was to be expected. This was tasted from a bottle that still held the original cork. Not decanted, the wine was popped and served. Regardless of the score, this was a rare treat we will all remember tasting.

  • Bob Gaynor - Night of Excess!: Unbelievably, my second time tasting this wine. Thanks to Bob for that. This 104 year old baby still has great light ruby color. An expressive, beautiful nose of earth, leather, spice and cigar ash. The initial moments on the palate show very good currant fruit, minerals and a lovely texture. It plays quite well with dusty tannins. Mid-palate fades and the finish is dry with dust and leathery notes. A real stunner and great time capsule into the past.

  • Dinner and Fine, Aged Wine at Le Francais (Wheeling, IL): What a great experience! Bob had "audozed" this 102 year old for ~4 hours.

Mature ruby red and to brown color. A complex, open and decidedly aromatic nose of smoke, leather, tea, cinnamon and caramel. Over time the sweeter elements faded and the smokey leather notes dominated. The palate was still quite vibrant with good acid and still-perceivable tannin. Fruit was light and definitely in the back seat. Flavors were smokey, leathery and spicey. A real treat and certainly a feat to offer so much interest and enjoyment past the century mark.
