Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 171 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lifeattable on 3/2/2024 & rated 92 points: Certainly much better than it was a decade ago - tho I haven’t had it in the meantime. Still fresh and vibrant, but showing aged oak notes. Honestly, I think it was best at p&p, when the fruit was most forward. Oak took over as it aired. Generally well balanced and delicious though. (250 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 6/18/2023 & rated 92 points: In a gorgeous drinking zone with fully mature yet fresh and buoyant red fruits with herbal and spice complexity. Ethereal. At peak. (847 views)
Tasted by bcolbath on 5/3/2022 & rated 94 points: A beautiful wine. Deep red color, no aging evident, very mature on the palate. It is in a very nice place now. (1251 views)
Tasted by asheio on 4/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Getting quite mature now. Still very fresh fruit with nicely integrated oak. Delicate style as always. (1265 views)
Tasted by Waedi on 3/16/2022 & rated 91 points: From double magnum. Still very youthful. Great purity, red fruited, good acidity, long. No hurry for next (and final) double magnum. 91+ (1268 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/1/2021 & rated 94 points: Opened 2hrs before dinner and finding it a bit austere decided to decant which did the trick. 60 minutes later this was singing in my Riedel Burgs with sips leading up to Nita's homemade pizza. Early balsamic notes all but disappeared replaced by generous red fruit ala '07, mineral & forest floor notes. While ripe this was exceedingly well balanced and alive. Color is a maturing semi translucent ruby red with some lighter tints on the edges. Deep & rewarding underbrush on the nose. Always a classic and somewhat unique version of sangiovese that is neither like Chianti nor Brunello. I'm a fan of the producer & left 2 or 3 messages requesting to visit Montevertine in '16 and could not get a response? Paid $35 for the '07 on release. These have jumped up in cost a good bit since. A modest 13% alc (1740 views)
Tasted by bcolbath on 7/27/2021 & rated 95 points: Deliciously mature. Solid body, great color. Will last for some years yet. (1453 views)
Tasted by larsth on 6/7/2021 & rated 94 points: Great mature, elegant red-fruited Sangiovese. This is in my view at peak now with great balance of red fruits and a fresh backbone. (1330 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 1/16/2021: Somewhat elusive on the first day, when drunk out of Zalto universal. On the second day, decanted an hour from recorked hal-fbottle, out of Zalto Burgundy glasses (also tried out of Zalto universal with unsatisfactory result), it is much better: The nose is full of amaretto cherries and the taste shows a typical sour twist and is still surprisingly youthful at age 13. Long aftertaste. Kind of shy and difficult, and also refined and elegant, like certain cat species. (I love cats.) (1425 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 11/14/2020 & rated 94 points: PNP sip lead to 2 hour+ slow ox prior to dinner. Drank great from Riedel Burg glasses! Coming from the warm 07 vintage this really benefits from serving cooler than room temp. The Alc is a modest 13% but the fruit really shines with a little chill which seems to enhance freshness. We drank it mostly around 58-62 tops. Semi translucent mid ruby red color. Excellent aromas of minerally underbrush and berries. Vibrant red fruit mix of raspberry and strawberry compote along with anise, mineral, herbs and forest floor. Thankfully there's plenty of acidity to maintain lift and freshness. This is hovering around its peak and likely should be drank up before 2025 latest. I have two more that I'll enjoy over the next 1-3 years. 94+ Great tonight with Nita's homemade pizza. (1756 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 4/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Popped, poured, consumed over three nights. Nice upon opening, but with air it opened up and revealed nuance after nuance. Cork in bottle, back in cellar, drank again on third night and it improved in the glass even more. Great balance, succulent, lovely complexity, haunting finish and it doesn't hurt that it's flat out delicious. (1582 views)
Tasted by PVJC on 4/6/2019 & rated 91 points: Solid wine with pizza dinner although better with food and not as good on its own after. (2095 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 4/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Rusty minerality, red cherries and strawberries, cinnamon, tea, tobacco. Such sweet and lovely fruit - it still has freshness and is devoid of any alcoholic sensations. Silkiness like a top burgundy. A truly special and so very joyful wine on top of its maturity curve. As so often... the last bottle is the best. (3886 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/25/2018 & rated 92 points: Pizza Night with Aged Classic Reds Ten Plus Years Old (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Much riper and darker than the '06. Ripe dark fruits, quite aromatic immediately, floral potpourri, crushed flowers, blackberries, black cherry liqueur, silky tannins, with some heat. Drank better early then the '06, but ultimately the vintage and varietal character of the '06 put it ahead for me. Did not hold up on day two. (3899 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 1/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Pizza night at Kevin's / R&Rler. Brad's btl tonight alongside my '06. This was more similar than different from mine but a bit richer reflecting the vintage. Another excellent example of Montevertine that did not suffer from the riper vintage. I'm totally happy to have 3 left from purchase on release. Semi translucent bright red. Red fruit, mineral, light herbs, earth, tobacco leaf. Very Chambolle Musigny in weight, texture and red fruit profile. Way more refined and complex than most Chiantis. And, nothing new world about this large cask aged sangiovese. Imported by Rosenthal. Sadly the price has jump from mid 30s to mid high 40s since the 07 but still a rock solid value. Fabulous with pizza tonight! Yes, pizza with qprs is fun but it was even more fun tonight with wines that actually turn your head! (3441 views)
Tasted by Bourgognefreak on 7/16/2017 & rated 91 points: elegant and perfumed with a lightness that almost hides away the power and backbone of this balanced and well-made wine.
I am happy to drink it now but will keep my other bottles some years for cellaring and further evolution.
Still good fruit. (3647 views)
Tasted by Doblk on 1/6/2017 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well. Still plenty of fruit and Sangiovese acidity, but it has softened nicely. It drops out some in the middle but there is a great finishing burst of complex flavor. It will keep some time more. (3658 views)
Tasted by slanum on 9/12/2016: I'd been alternately delighted and disappointed with two prior bottles so I'm pleased to say this one was lovely. At just about the ideal point for my tastes, the fruit still tastes fresh while the medley of aromas have shifted into high gear. Most enjoyable. (3333 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 8/27/2016 & rated 92 points: We thought perhaps the sweet and slightly precocious '07 Montevertine had shown its best already, but the wine took a turn in another direction. It's definitely not fully developed yet. For the moment the aromas focus on sage, tobacco, earth, and black cherries. it is relatively warm and full-bodied, with lots of stuffing left for a longer future. No hurry at all to finish these lovely bottles. (3913 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 5/21/2016: Seems in a kind of intermediary phase between youthful freshness and real maturity but drinking well all the same. High acidity, very fragrant but kind of undeveopled in the mouth. (3627 views)
Tasted by nicefish on 5/13/2016 & rated 89 points: Unlike so many previous bottles, this one was showing with a bit too much brett. Might be provenance issues, might be past it's prime. In any case not as fresh as previous bottles. (3102 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 3/13/2016 & rated 89 points: Perfumed and seductive aromas. Delicate fruit. Made in a polished and open "in your face" style. Soft tannins. More lovely than great, maybe. (2784 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 2/3/2016: Delicious and ready to go. No detailed notes. (2648 views)
Tasted by gilrbo on 7/31/2015: Over dinner with friends, no TN.
Last time I drank this blood oranges was the dominant note on the palate.
Now this has evolved into something a lot more complex and complete, with good body and presence, but still a lively acidity. Beautiful nose, which seems to have reached maturity. (3561 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 7/3/2015 & rated 90 points: Very nice wine. Definitely a bit riper then usual but the finish is very elegant. Restrained despite the vintage.needs drinking. (3119 views)

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
