Tasted by JJKinch on 7/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Cork broke so decanted. Some sediment
Dark fruit (black cherry, blackberry), spice, earth, tobacco, leather, good acidity. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable (202 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 1/20/2016 & rated 89 points: Very rustic, lighter style of Sangiovese. It might be entering a decline as our bottle seemed a little weak. (2772 views)
Tasted by Gian on 12/25/2014 & rated 91 points: Light red color , leather , red fruits , cherries , autumn leaves , on the palate round , balanced , savoury and with a long finish . Difficult to stop pour more glasses. (2841 views)
Tasted by gfish on 2/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 1 hour, drank with chicken parmigiana & pasta dinner. There was very little sediment (was it filtered?). I will decant the next bottle another hour longer.
- Color was ruby red but lighter than I expected it to be.
- Smoke and red cherry on the nose
- At first tannins were a little stiff but they relaxed with more time & air exposure. Flavors of smoke, red cherry, spices and earthiness mixed with good acidity.

I heard that 2005 was a somewhat challenging year and the addition of declassified grapes that usually go into La Pergola Torte bottling definitely helped. I do question longevity of this wine as the fruit was lighter (more faded?) than what I expected it to be when I first tasted this bottling back in 2011. I think now is a good time to be drinking this wine and I do recommend decanting it. 90+ (3278 views)
Tasted by Kerino on 1/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Lovely floral, light nose with subtle tobacco and elegant finish. Low alcohol. Delicious wine. A little cloudy in the glass though. Good sense of terroir. Can I say that about an Italian wine? Too late now. (3597 views)
Tasted by kfinsrud on 7/28/2013 & rated 90 points: A very elegant wine with pleasent aromas of leather, tobacco and dried flowers. Complex nose that developed during two hours. Fruity in terms of cherries. Tannins have melted down completely so this was enjoyed without food. Good value for an IGT from Tuscany. This one surprised me in terms of maturity, it shows tertiary aromas already and clearly on its top now. Will soon head downhill, drink up while you can! (3752 views)
Tasted by Riccardo Malocchio on 2/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Straight-up, classic Sangio profile of smokey, bitter cherry and spice on a light, but intense frame. There's a great woodsy, earthy depth here, along with light tobacco and leather notes. The acid is intense and refreshing, though a bit shrill; the finish persistent with some drying astringency as it tails off. It's all suffused with a mature, advanced quality, but there remains good energy and presence on the palate. By any name, a quintessential Chianti. (2546 views)
Tasted by wombat on 1/30/2013 & rated 92 points: Bouquet: Tobacco, earth, smoke, leather, floral, dried red raspberry and red cherry.
Flavor: Earthy, tobacco, bright red raspberry and red cherry, spice, smoke/wood, and coffee. Finishes with a return to the bright berry flavors. 20 sec finish. Has aged beautifully and is underrated in my opinion. These notes were taken between the 2 and 4th day after opening (half bottle kept in the fridge). The first day showed more of the fruit character up front with the secondary characteristics following afterward. Read a note that said this vintage used only the best grapes, though I'm not quite sure what that means (Pergole declassified?). (2830 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 8/26/2012 & rated 92 points: light red. Light cherry, floral and orange peel nose, beautiful really. Delicious very balanced orange peel and chery, earth flavours and a perfect balanced finish. (2198 views)
Tasted by vinum bonum on 4/3/2012: C'est vrai que le millésime était un peiti peu léger, mais le vin était excellent, sur la finesse et l'élégance (comme toujours). Une très belle bouteille, vin délicieux. (2105 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 3/12/2012 & rated 89 points: Very light red, Burgundy looking. Very nice subdued cherry and violet nose. Some earthiness in the background. Delicious cherry and earth flavours, a bit fleeting though. Lots of acid in the finish. I loved it with the pasta, Raviolis filled with squash. (1867 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 7/10/2011 & rated 87 points: Garnet, red and brick, fading at the edge. Light and translucent. Burgundian on the nose, with earthy, woodsy aromas. The taste is pleasant, but the fruit is fairly muted. High in acidity, as one would expect. The tannins are still fairly prominent on the finish, requiring some cheese or other rich food for best effect. Light to medium bodied, this wine is fairly thin. Even though it is a classic blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino, it does appear to be more akin to a cooler-weather Burgundy or even a Chinon. Elegant and interesting wine, but not sure it is worth the price. Drink now, as I think it is more likely than not to fade with more time. (2078 views)
Tasted by knuckles1970 on 3/19/2011 & rated 93 points: Excellent. Long decant. Lightly coloured, floral on the nose, very subtle but pleasing. Wonderfully balanced, definitely can taste cherry. Earthy as well, and nice long finish. Very nice, one more bottle to go. Will try and save it for a couple more years. (2483 views)
Tasted by Mark162 on 1/11/2011 & rated 91 points: Brilliant ruby red color and wonderful fruity aroma. Not as heavy as I would have expected for a 2005 Sangiovese. Red currents, light spices and a little earth. Very nice. (2269 views)
Tasted by 2mwine on 10/3/2010 & rated 91 points: Veldig, kraftig og velbalansert (2518 views)
Tasted by ekenneth on 8/25/2010 & rated 92 points: Nice very subtle wine. At different moments, I feel like it's a Nebbiolo or a Red Burgundy. It's lightly colored, with good tanin, red cherry flavor, a little smoke and an earthy quality. I would not have guessed Sangeovese. (2623 views)
Tasted by Haltermr on 5/28/2010 & rated 92 points: Lovely aromas of rose petal, leather, sweet cherries, plums. Beautifully textured, smooth across midpalate and moderately long finish.
Utterly beguiling in it's finess; this is elegant liquid silk. Chambolle Musigny meets Toscana? (2623 views)

2005 Montevertine Toscana IGT

Sangioveto and Canaiolo

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
